- Its time for my annual Winter Camping Christmas Special! This year, however, with Snow and Ice, and freezing temperatures, it actually feels like Christmas! And I also found a variety of animal prints outside my tent too!

One of the best trips I did on Dartmoor was in the bitter winter of February 1975. The ground froze solid, including the bogs, and it was like walking on a highway. Magic.
I had a similar experience after the first lockdown, the land was completely dry, walked places I wpuld never have reached usually

It's a Wonderful Life is an absolute must at Christmas, never fails to make me cry at the end, but I'm a soppy ole girl. You also forgot your Christmas lights too!!! Haha - had a proper chuckle watching that and thinking 'he's got that upside down!' fair play for leaving it in the vid and good to see the cheaper end of the market gear holding it's own too. I still use all my years old kit and it still works and some of the nature hike gear seems to be decent quality

🤣🤣 Yea, i have seen big cats before in a couple of places in Nrth Devon before, so 100% belive they are around (people used to keep them and had to release them, cull them or send them to zoos when they bought in the wild animal act in the late 70s) but was pretty sure these weren't cat paws. Phew that was a bleak camp 🥶🥶 thanks for reviewing that sleeping bag I’ve been looking for an upgrade from my current one might be just the ticket … On the tent breakage I always have a couple of feet of paracord with me to effect some running repairs always worth that couple of extra ounces👍👍 …. Love watching your channel Trev. Those paw prints are indeed foxes as you could see claws at the tip of the paw pads if the paw prints are round they ain't hound as cats retract their claws. Anyway I really enjoy watching all of your wilderness camps brilliant. I would love to go wild camping myself, but last time I was on Dartmoor mother nature is unforgiving caught me out I was cycling across a part of Dartmoor got into a bit of trouble the temperature droped I had plenty of layers but just couldn't get warm Hypothermia I had to be rescued which has put me off a bit.
Thanks Rachel - really glad that you enjoyed the video (and the channel) - hopefully lots more content this coming year. That does sound like a frightening and off putting experience. Its about having the correct layers more than the right layers. Cotton layers especially loses its ability to insulate and then just drains heat from your body quickly. Anyway, I hope you do finally face your fears and give it a try (maybe in the warmer seasons) as it really is a great experience. Thank for watching and happy new year!

@@SummitOrNothing There's a good book called Animal Tracks by John Rhyder I was recommended on a basic tracking course I did, looks like a rear fox foot. I'm no expert but it's certainly fun taking a look. Merry Christmas and love the rants, most people will be thinking the same things :)

I do often take a hip flask of rum, actually, left quite a lot behind this time (I kind of rushed to get out last minute here). Was still a good camp out though, nice and snug in the naturehike sleeping bag. Thanks foe watching!
Merry Christmas Trev another great watch a snowy camp I do think hand and the foot warmers are a great idea to carry ( I did see some insole shape warmers ) along with a water container you can use as a hot water bottle in your sleeping bag

In the famous words of Arnie... I'll be back... just having a break from the camera is all.
I've got that tent, with the winter inner from Camperlists, and the top clip pops off if I set it up too tight to start. But in a rush & under windy conditions, I can see how that could happen. I always bring backups, zip ties etc just in case

Awesome you had some snow. I'm yet to complete a snow camp. I love my gopro, and I bloody hate it too. Sometimes I just want to stamp on it when it freezes or playback screen locks. Pile of crap 🤣
Ah, the bloody go pro is so frustrating. I couldnt use it all on this camp. Would film for about 4 seconds and then shut off. Great picture but could you imagine being midway through a skydive and having the bloody thing freeze. I'm gonna try to go through the rigmarole of complaining I think. Was great to finally get out on a snowy camp though. Hope you're feeling better now, saw ur covid post.. let's hope you didn't catch that off santa on your lapland visit, he may have contaminated houses the world over this weekend. 😉
@Summit Or Nothing have you got enduro batteries in it? They fit in the 9 upwards and work much better in the cold and last longer. Tend to go wrong less too. Yeah covid is still hanging round but we had a good Xmas. Bloody lapland full of covid 🤣 great trip though. One of my best hols. Hope you had a good one 👍

Like when you used your foot to clear the snow for the tent, could you push the snow up to the tent to keep the snow out? I'm not in to wild camping but seeing videos like this makes me want to try it.

Thanks Brian. Yes, just the once during my first camp with Thom when the winds were about 60mph. Got silly so we decamped at about 4am

How do we get the best outdoor channel back on the moors Trev.?
I take zip ties with me so in case I need to secure the poles at the top together, I can do so easily.
Top tip, always have some zip ties in your pack, great for your kind of issue, straps coming away, I've even used them as shoe laces before

Nice video. I have had to clear the snow from many a camp site and when you think about it isn't normal to walk sideways and scrap the foot. When I do it (even though I'm fit) I get cramps on the inside of my legs after clearing a big site. Does anyone else get cramps? ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀
I didnt get cramps myself, just almost went arse over tit. I'd love to get over to NZ for some proper mountain trekking. Visited in 2004 but wasn't into hiking then... did Franz Joseph glacier hike, that was about it! All the best and thanks for watching!

Hi Jeanette. Yea, the sleeping bag was awesome. The wrap around 'giblets' inside the hood were a great addition too to help contain your body heat. I went for the snowbird -3, but found that the specs on amazon don't add up. I have shared a link to the bag via camperlists in the video description. That's who sent mine. 3F UL are making some really good backpacking tents. How does it compare to the Naturehikes you're used too?
I really rate it, Rachel. If it wasn't for the broken clip on top it's the best tent I have. Bit larger pack but easy to put up, nice thick walls. Thanks for watching!

Hi Trev, I'm going bike camping & the coast to coast next year, I'm looking at buying the cloud up 2 or taiji 2, I'm 6' 1" & want to be comfortable, what in your opinion would be the best?
TAiji 2 is a little heavier but a lot roomier for anyoe over 6 foot i reckon. Its hands down the most spacious tent i own
