    I like that the show demonstrates that it's easy to love guys like Ted Lasso but that, in the real world, in the professional world, kindness needs to have perspective for more than just who is in front of you and in the moment

      Have this exact problem at work. My boss has been failing in his role, is absent at long times with no explanation, doesn't get us what we need to do our jobs. But his boss is s really nice friendly guy. Does my boss need to be fired no, but he needs a reality check from his boss, a get it together moment. But because his boss is this really nice lasso like guy he doesn't have that talk, and we all suffer for it.

      @@agoo7581 “I mean, what he said added more value than what you said”. How so? National simply repeated what the video already said, so if I watched the video Nationals comment was already covered…no value. What I said was point out National likely likes to hear themselves talk which was confirmed. So I added something that gave insight into Nationals post that wasn’t there before…that’s adding value.

    Brendan Hunt's acting is masterful here. You can feel the irritation combined with the love he feels for Ted just from him staring, unblinking at his best friend, then looking slightly down when he's just about reached his limit, before exploding after he's had enough of the bullshit.
    Also, "And that's okay!" is such a perfect line. Too often we want to be super nice or super professional, when both sides can be correct and you need to find the best way to approach different situations. You always need people to remind you that just because you aren't nice doesn't mean you're wrong.

    Having coached in college athletics I often said to athletes “Winning is not what is important, but rather the pursuit of winning.” Winning us merely a momentary outcome that has been preceded by long hours of preparation. It’s the mindset that lends itself to have the discipline to train and work for something is what is truly great about competitive pursuits. Don’t get me wrong winning feels great, but the best feeling in my opinion is being able to look back and know that you gave it your all regardless of the outcome.

      Yeah, except the Premier league isn't college sport. Relegation means your budget goes from around 100m as a bottom team to 50-70m as top of championship league. Your team will get gutted and those who stay will have to spend a year out of the main spot light which takes away millions of potential value off their career. And then there's the staff, people will lose their jobs, the local area loses match day earnings. Like, there's the healthy competitive mindset but when you're the manager you're responsible for everyone on the team. Beard was right, "they're not kids, they're professionals."

    • @jetman24
      @jetman24 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes in college, high school and lower, but when it comes to professional sports WINNING IS THE ONLY THING. That's how you measure success. Football in Europe has relegations, so if you ain't winning you'll end up in the ditch.

    I love Beard's tough love here. With college kids yeah winning and losing doesn't really matter all that much. But in the professional world it absolutely does. Losing here will impact the future prospects of the players at Richmond and and beyond and it will impact the club's standing. Players earn more to play on a premiere league team. Clubs bring in more if they're in the premiere league. Losing will have consequences beyond "oh well success isn't measured by wins and losses"

    Every Ted needs a Coach Beard to keep them grounded. Ted's philosophy is incredible but there's people he's going to hurt by living it. Caring more about the player's characters than results means hurting the town. Being there for everyone hurts people like Nate who need more support and have abandonment issues. Coach Beard knows Ted means well but he also knows the damage he can do. It's great to want to be more like Ted but make sure you find a Coach Beard!

      You were doing well until you defended Nate like that. Nate has a power dynamics issue reinforced by abuse, he only feels abandoned because of how he associates Ted's position with power. Nate is obsessed with making himself the victim, something Ted will never be able to help him fix that because Nate will throw Ted under the bus the second Nate gets a better validation high.

      Also, with relegation on the line and many clubs being the only large employer in their cities, the change in budget that can come with relegation and the loss of TV revenues, etc., puts more people out of work and depresses the economy of the whole city, not to mention what clubs' success means to their fans personally.
