  • Dan Holohan, International Authority on Steam Heating and Hydronics, has written among many books, Greening Steam, which discusses how to bring sustainability to older heating systems. In this special Zoom talk, at a time when environmental impact is of critical importance, Mr. Holohan will describe how steam heating is supposed to work; and how to initiate green programs that overhaul existing steam systems for maximum energy efficiency.

I was there that day lol thanks Dan for opening up the idea that steam isn’t meant to boom and clang. But to be silent and hot!

I love the vacuum steam method. Silent and total quiet at the output surface!
I don't see vacuum pump running cost just 10 seconds a day.
Many gasses weep out of the internal materials inside pipe circuits and supply water.

I wanna thank Dan and everyone at the GSMT for putting this together. I have a thing for steam heating and enjoy constantly learning about it. I was in for a pleasant suprise yesterday during the orientation when i connected the dots. The last name Holohan didnt hit me right away until your brother spoke about you. Then bam! I said in my head the following...... O shoot! The steam guy, the steam god, the one and only Dan Holohan. As if i didnt already feel privileged to have enrolled and be accepted in lol

I do have to disagree with Dan on the ph of the feed/boiler water, never thought I'd ever have to say he's wrong about anything steam related. Chemical addition is a must in commercial/industrial boilers and we maintain a ph between 10 and 12 typically as an industry. I like to shoot for 11 rite in the middle. Have seen many boilers running over 12 with no foaming. Over 12.5 you would start to see some negetive effects. Another benefit to chemical treatment is not having to worry about carbonic acid in the returns when Amines are used in the treatment. Condensate ph over 9 keeps the returns in great condition.

And since there are vents on the radiators plus the Main Vents on the headers, how is a vacuum ever created ?

I don't think it would even need air vents because you're pulling the air out of the system prior to it firing up.

Dan's videos are an incredible resource to help understand steam systems. While the historical narrative is very entertaining, it is also extremely valuable to understand the design progression of legacy steam systems.

Dan, How did the Russian guys hook up the Vacuum Pump to the System ?

Glad to see Dan is still giving great talks. Why retire if you can do this from your living room?

thermal seasonal efficiency of steam of poor 60 to 80% at best compared to heatpumps and condensing hot water - wipe out any gains of not needing pumps or fans. fan ventilation systems can actually save energy if they have heat recovery.
