I love my green powermatic 80. Although in all of the time I wear it, no one notices. After a year of buying one watch per week and getting into watches, and I’m in my 50’s and it’s a new obsession, I’ve bought watches ranging from divers, dressers, gold, homages, khaki’s, pilot’s, smaller, larger, thicker, thinner. I could go on. And the only person that notices that I wear them are me. Buy for you. And just enjoy.

Bought this watch 1 month ago, my first automatic. And I love it, despite how easily it gets scratched. Can’t really complain because of the price point. I believe this is a “if you know you know” watch.

I own this watch and I love it. It's hyped, and for a reason: it's just fabulous value for money. I like the design with the contrast of angular brushed surfaces and the round polished bezel. The light play on the dial never bores me, with it´s waffle pattern combined with a subtle sunburst, which makes the deep color shift constantly every time the light hits it differently. The light play on the bracelet is just lovely, and the powermatic 80 movement runs like a dream, consistently at about -/-1 sec./day.

So glad Tissot is getting some good recognition. I own three different models including an automatic chronograph. This PRX is a knockout production and unbelievably affordable. These are all Swiss Made. Right now, from a famous watch dealer you can purchase an Automatic Chronograph T-Race MotoGP with a Swiss Made ETA Caliber C01.211 automatic chronograph movement for under $500. Read that again. It is a massive 49mm, but what a great knock around watch for that price. The Blue Dial PRX is a great looking dial, it also comes in a very nice green dial as well. I love my Tissots..!

I remember seeing the PRX when it first release, I bought the white dial instantly.... then I found out they were releasing an automatic later that year. I ended up returning the white dial quartz in favor of the black powermatic 80. For a while I was trying to justify why having quartz was better, but I realized if I was playing this much "mental gymnastics" I might as well get the automatic since it was in my budget. No regrets and it is my favorite watch. If I could only keep 1 watch from my collection, it'd be my PRX.... though a very close second is my Seiko SPB119.

    • @LONprod

@@alanv3185 I wouldn't pick a tag heuer as your first watch, they tend to cut corners in comparison to other brands.
I can't really give you a suggestion straight away, since taste is subjective. It also depends what part of the watch you care about the most, since your not going to get a watch for $2,000 that really excels in all parts of the watch (bracelet, dial, case, movement etc)
Let me know what 1 or 2 things you want the watch to excel in and ill find something for you :)

I eas previously looking at solely the PRX but the Certina has AR Coating and better loom which will help in more utility. Also with my 6.1" wrist, the PRX's lug to lug is somewhere about 51 due to the integrated bracelet. So I wanted to know if I should get the PRX Powermatic 80 for my 6.1" wrist? I'm yet to fully grow so in a year or 2 my hands will certainly grow up a bit. Or should I look for thr Certina?

This watch is what it is…a good value prop for a Swiss beater watch (I own one so no hate here) that greatly resembles another brand. Even though the PRX has its history from the 70s, even then it was a grab for the popular design language made popular from the other giants. Still, if you can’t appreciate what they have done, the value, then I’d argue you’re not really a watch enthusiast.

I have the same blue dial one. It's an amazing piece that just feels and looks so much more luxurious than what the price would suggest.
Hodinkie needs to do more videos on affordable/obtainable bangers. Certina DS Action comes to mind, or even the Bulova Lunar Pilot 43,5mm. Come to think of it, what a killer 3 piece collection of those two plus a PRX is. It's like getting a Submariner, a Speedmaster, and a Nautilus for around €2000. And it's a trio to suit all situations. I've worn the PRX on quite formal events, and it felt very natural, and the dial matched the lapis lazuli inserts on my cufflinks. I have no less than three dress watches, but the PRX seemed the way to go, and it got a lot of compliments.
I also have an almost NOS Bulova Super-Seville, an early version with the shallow chapter ring (which is the most desirable variation from my research). And, yes, it is a straight Rolex Day-Date homage, but the fact that it is over forty years old, and it looks like it was unwrapped yesterday makes it an interesting piece, and a bit of a bargain for my collection. A collection where my goal is to get the most interesting bang for bucks, no matter if it is through appearance, complications, history, build quality, or whatnot. Almost all my pieces can also double as conversation pieces.

Anyone have any opinion on the movement used here? I hear along with the extended power reserve by reducing the beat rate they also added a plastic part to the escapement making servicing an issue. Would be interested to know if this is accurate. Being a Swatch brand I would have thought an easy ETA based movement that can easily be serviced would be an expectation but if that’s not the case due to modifications it would be great to know. Thanks

    • @visiblemode
      @visiblemode ปีที่แล้ว

It’s definitely serviceable. It’s a modified ETA workhorse movement. If you send it in though, expect a swap. It’s just faster to swap in a working movement and harvest the parts from the movement in need of fixing/servicing, at this price point. Nothing about the plastic composite parts used here make servicing an issue, though. This is a real, fairly traditional, auto movement, not a Sistem51 type of situation.

Hodinkee never replies to comments but I'm going to ask anyway: what button down shirt are you wearing here?

Great review Danny! I appreciate the comments on the typefaces. Typography is also an major contributing element to a watches feeling imo.

I would rather get the new Seiko 5 for $475 than spending $600+ on this
Ps- I like sporty watches and divers so perfect for me !!! Plus the green dial is soo good 🤌

Your favorite design function is the font used for PRX? Sheesh man 😂

They need to make the dial more reflective or pop under any lights sources because it is a bit finicky to get it to shine due to the understated dull tone of color choice that they decided to went in this installment/rendition version.

Imagine someone... making a 6-minute watch review and not saying a single word about accuracy. Now, the question arises: was it a watch that you reviewed then or a swiss marketing gimmick?

The unfortunate aspect is that the Tissot PRX Automatic contains plastic parts (the Powermatic 80, with its 23 jewels, includes plastic components), detracting from the overall quality and heritage of the watch collection. Instead, the PRX Quartz presents a preferable option.

The newer powermatic 80 models have a lot of major components made in plastic , cheapens the whole thing

I really don't like the endlinks. They completely ruin the proportions and fluidity for me. This could have been the Oysterquartz alternative I was looking for but the bracelet having oddly sized links just screws it up for me

how the fuck is this watch so beautiful! I got one as a gift and I was constantly giggling while watching this video! I have it in silicone strap, planning to get the stainless steel bracelet, any idea where to get the bracelet ( Cause tissot's website doesn't give an option to buy)

Finally after that random palooka riding bikes and scooters, and that narccistic woman that only talks about herself, we finally get a real watch person on Hodinkee talking about watches

It's a hipster piece, and a bit too big for a three hander in my opinion. It should've been released in 38mm, 40mm for a chrono variant perhaps.

Ok Hear me out...I'm a graphic designer. The kerning on "POWERMATIC" is terrible. The spacing between the O & W...ouch!!! also the "A & T"...wow!!! Great value watch.
