And to not display animosity toward everything and anyone, I mean yall are not obligated to read kotaku articles, so how come there's no chance left unused seeking out content, where yall probably know before hand yall don't agree with? It's almost like an addiction to the outrage 😂
@robinnewhouse1563 In a sense I get what you're saying, but on the other hand when one of our favourite hobbies is under attack by media and corporations, it is only natural that we pay attention to them and fight back.
You tools have been sayinn theyr'e dead for years now and as far as. I can tell they're still just as big as ever. Here's a thought, if you morons actually want them to die stop talking about them. Stop watching their reviews. Its hilarious how all of you numbskulls will bash a review you dont like for your favorite game you haven't bothered playing, but then use a positive score for validation.
I have never cared about Kotaku and IGN has always been in the background. I don't understand gamers that want to destroy the parts they don't like. If I was like them I would try to destroy all sports in games because I never play the sport games and I really don't like them at all. I stopped looking at Kinda funny because they didn't like Psvr2. But I would never want them to stop existing. I'm not that ego.
I grew up loving old school game magazines. But current day games journalism isn't what we grew up with. And everybody knows it. They killed their own medium with political opinion pieces.
It's a universal law that always has and a thousand years from now will remain: Being hostile, antagonistic, hateful and just outright taking the opposite view from your target customers just to spite them when you feel it gives you temporary moral high ground will always end this way. Yes people are turning to TH-cam - but that is by and large because they can find people they trust and anyone that forsakes it in a similar manner can instantly be replaced with a constant influx of new talent in the space.
I was using a walkthrough on IGN and got so many ads that i couldnt even see the guide anymore so i went and found a better one and stopped going there
Games journalists did it to themselves. It's been blatantly obvious for a long time that there's a divide between critics and gamers because the former constantly push a narrative the latter rarely identify with.
Im in my 40s….these ain’t the same companies from back in the day. Theyre all the same corporate media, with all the identical ideologies that hate gamers.
Lets not forget that they chose to go to war with the very people they needed to survive. Catering to the "modern audience" while attacking the people that got you there is a mistake the gaming industry seems to keep making.
The gaming journalism can stay when all the activists are gone. These days the industry has been ruined by DEI so much that the media cannot report the news to gamers without their biases. That corporate media term is far less influential compared with the DEI crap which damages the entire gaming industry in itself.
The truth is games journalism died long ago. What we have at these large companies now is not journalism. It’s a mix of corporate stenographers (people who just parrot what publishers tell them, lest they lose “access”) and professionally angry talking heads who think their personal opinions are more important than the stories they’ve been tasked with reporting. Do I agree with every take I hear from Dreamcast guy? No I don’t. But he’s authentic. He says what he genuinely thinks about these games and these issues. That authenticity is what has allowed TH-cam to grow while conventional media dies.
People are celebrating this but I actually think its sad to their decline in quality over the years. I genuinely used to go on the Ign and gamespot website nearly everyday when I was a kid in the late 2000s and 2010’s. I wish they maintained their quality and connection with actual gamers.
Well IGN has a lot of people that could be paid off and admit they arent journalists. Destin legerie, Ryan McCaffrey alone shilling for Xbox alone hurts the consumer. Imagine picking up an Xbox this year because you read/heard about Xbox in a favourable light only to realize you got screwed? People still look to these publications.
Ign can't be trusted in the slightest anyway so no loss there. The rest of them aren't much better, bought and paid for comes to mind with their "reviews"
They can't play games and need extra easy modes. They don't like gamers, treating us all like a disease because we love high school flash backs. And they don't like games, but love to preach about activism in them. Sounds like a recipe for success right?
I remember when Game Informer blocked me on their website. It said I would be unblocked on 2116 or something like that. Jokes on them because they are gone!
games journalism doesn't need to exist anymore when youtubers to it much better than them, also games journalism has been infected by activists who hate gamers and video games
There are actually hundreds of episodes of xplay, attack of the show, etc archived on some channels on youtube. So not all skits are lost yet anyway. I find myself periodically going back and watching them. Better times.
Games Media, like everything, is a cult of personality, and that's why it was so successful. The people featured in Gamepro, EGM, Game Informer and so much more felt like real people, like real gamers that had that passion and played these games just like the rest of us. But after the infamous Cuphead demo, the industry was now exposed for what it is now, and that's non-gamer journalists that don't care are running the show. Websites became basically blogs about random shit other than gaming so they could make more money, or push political agenda to bait engagement. More and more terrible games getting 8's and 9's that don't deserve them objectively just so these sites can stay in the corporate good graces for access, instead of actually being objective. The personality is gone, and those that had it left, and the readers/watchers followed them. And now with the internet, it's much easier to get a hold of industry people, as well as industry people just leaking whatever to get views. There is no need for journalists or editors when all the information is just there, unfiltered for anyone to disseminate and do with what they will.
I think you either missed the point or are deliberately not mentioning it. The reason people are celebrating the failure and shutdown of all these websites is because they spew nothing but hate for their customers. They have made themselves the enemy of the audience and are proud of that. Games companies then listen to them and have them run to their defense all the time at the expense of the customer, and the customer has gotten bored of it.
TH-camrs like us are more trusted because how we just want to talk about the things we love. Where IGN and others is just scripted force readings where a lot of reviewers on their own TH-cam channels actually care with what they talk about and are passionate.

It's not ''messy'' this isn't 1985, it's very clear games journalism has been going downhill for decades, and finally hit rock bottom. They hate us, we hate them, it's that simple.
People always a wanted a specific face to tell them stuff (i.e. news, trends etc). The problem is that the faces provided by big outlets no longer appear real/genuine. When the faces provided by the corporation don't feel real, people look elsewhere, it's as simple as that. Maybe the corporation-provided face never really felt that genuine/real, but there was no alternative. After the alternative came, it only took around 10 years for people to tune out.
Maybe they should have stopped including their politics in their writing and go back to objectively critiquing a game based on it's design, merits and creativity
I "watch" videos over viewing articles, because hearing the person in the video, means I can do other things at the same time, similar to listing to podcasts, etc. But in instances where Im trying to find a quick answer, skimming over an article can sometimes prove faster. This is more rare than just consuming general content though. In regards to listening to 'one guy' ... its nothing new for people to do. They're more likely to engage with people have aligned similar views to. They may step over to watch someone else in instances if they're looking for an alternative take to their own, which isn't as common of a practice. I dont spend enough time with written media to have formed an ill opinion of the networks that have come and gone. The only additional thing I'd say to the point of written media is around AI written articles turning people away from engagement, which is understandable.
They lack the self awareness and humility to understand and accept that attacking your own customers breaks the most basic rule of business. Game journalism was great when it was just about games and the people writing the articles didn't hate their audience. Once the political activists took over, they destroyed it. I'm looking forward to its further demise, and when it dies, absolutely nothing of value will be lost.
its all crazy to see this happening. I had IGN bookmarked for well over 10 years and visited everyday but about 6 months ago I just found it an awful site with very poor content. The reviews were mostly terrible and I wandered away to TH-cam reviews. Even when I'm at work I can watch stuff with closed captions so feels like I'm getting proper news from people I like watching.
Injecting political opinions and beliefs into media and games, allowing a person's politics to influence their work ethic, and responding with a political bias when the previous statement or question wasn't even remotely political is was killed the media in video games. If I want game news or game reviews I just go to my favorite TH-camrs. I trust my favorite TH-camrs more than a woke game journalist. I feel like these companies will lie about gamer reviews just to get early access. They literally can’t be trusted. And a TH-camr is more willing to tell the truth.
I never really got into the game websites except for Gametrailers when that was still a thing. After publications like EGM and Gamepro shuttered, I pretty much stopped listening to what might be considered games journalism.
I miss psm and gamepro, they were my boys 😔 reading about ut and touching the pages ment something, phone are OK but it does not replace physical media. Kids just don't get it. Digital can be erased and taken but physical will last and stand the test of time(also appreciate in valve)
this has been a long time coming. The biggest problem is many of these journalist have is that they dont know when to shut up on social media which is ironic and kotaku is the prime example of this issue. They fight with their customer base they post articles that are terrible and are antagonistic and people dont like that.
9:32 "I wish they would go back to as good as they were a couple years back" WTF?! Those sites have been trash A LOT LONGER than a couple of years. These site started hating gamers about a decade ago and started making their coverage about everything BUT the games and hardware. They started being activists and writing truly absurd stuff. Here are a few from memory... One site said Person 5 DLC had a song that made fun of disabled people A reviewer for the site complained about how hard their review of the Xbox Series X and how they could never own one because all the small holes triggers a phobia they have. Another used a PS5 review to complain about the state of the country One complained about how Barbra Gordan was handled in Arkham Knight and then had to apologize and admit they were wrong because THEY DIDN'T FINSH THE GAME They were mad at how police were seen in media and that Spider-Man was friendly with the police in the game They were mad that the main character was wh_te in Days Gone and that the main character made compliments about HIS WIFE'S GOOD LOOKS and them flirting with each other I could go on but I think I've illustrated just how bad they've been. That area of the game industry earned it's fall with every BS article, claim, complaint, and piece of activism. If the owners of the site or the editors would have done their jobs by replacing the bad actors with quality writers at the first sign of trouble, they could have stayed longer and maybe made the pivot to youtube themselves. As it is, I'm happy they're gone
And the guy that you're covering Daniel Bloodworth. He's with easy allies. I was their number one fan for over 10 years more. Even earlier- Since there were game trailers and they completely went woke. Anti community comments. They attack their own community. They lost half of their staff, that is, they quit and they're also losing.
I want more journalism just for game reviews and I don't want it to be gone forever! Also whatever story for like behind the scenes and interviews with devs. Just no more fucking politics and culture wars just talk about rhe games for god sake! I don't want history to be gone either its too important!
I would have to say it’s most due to the political idealistic agendas that have been forced into gaming journalism that put the nail in the coffin for it. None of that has anything to do with gaming at all whatsoever and those that are in the industry now have sadly made that the focal points of their writing. They barely play any of the games as is and are 9/10 citing what content creators had said on whichever social media platform. Meaning there is barely any real gaming journalism leg work being done by them. People have noticed this over the years and are just like cut out the lazy rhetoric spewing middleman and just go straight to the sources they’ve been citing themselves. Gamers want to know about the games not how games don’t cater/pander to specific audience/demographic and how that somehow ties into the writer’s life story… We want to know if the game is good or bad not “oh it’s a good game but I deducted points because I’m not a fan of this genre” or “it’s lacking in ambiguity in terms of whatever”. None of that has ever had a place in gaming as it is 100% of the time an escape from reality for most of not all. The forceful push of what reality to be stoned into games and gaming journalism nowadays being at the forefront of that is a disgraceful thing. Gamers know that these gaming journalists are no longer to be trusted and so no longer have a use for them. Sad but true, sucks folks will be out of jobs but this is what happens when you lose your way. Most of them barely ever played games anyway to write reviews…
Gaming media did this to themselves, but look at the return of G4. To try and run that as a corporation with so many job positions was ridiculous. I enjoy watching spawn wave everyday, and correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s two people that do all that. Spawn wave searches for his stories, does the filming, and sends it off to the editor. He does a dam good job for such a small production and it shows for how he’s grown. TH-camrs are making better content or just as good content as most TV shoes I used to watch for 1/100 of budget. I will watch anywhere from 5-6 different reviewers on TH-cam (dreamcastguy included) and make my decision if I want to purchase a new game at launch or shortly after, later on sale, Black Friday for $20, or pick up used a few years later. I don’t normally even care to see what IGN says about said game. Sometimes if I’m stuck and ign is the first thing that pops up I may scroll and see who else has posted before watching them.
I think we look for reviewers that mirror our own opinions. Like I trust the shere hunter or Reggie when it comes to survival horror or rageselect when they talk souls like games. If a reviewer has similar taste it is more likely their opinion will mimic you.
🕺 the idea that layoffs are purely a negative is ultimate brain rot 💃 Sometimes people can be described as “filth”. And nowhere is it easier to see than Game Journos HATING THE HAND THAT FEEDS THEM!
Industries have caught on that they don’t have to pay someone anymore. They can rely on the word of mouth by the massive amount of twitch streamers and TH-camrs that have huge following and sometimes they don’t even get paid for a review yet the game gets publicity, like some people say at the end whether the publicity is good or bad it’s still publicity.
HA HA! SUCK IT GAMING JOURNALISM! YOU TOO BIG BUDGET WESTERN AAA GAMES!😈 It’ll be a joy watching video game journalism and big budget western AAA titles go up in smoke. It already is as we speak and it brings me even more joy knowing this. AAA games have long lost their edge, devoid of innovation/risk, boring graphics (at least to me, I’m not a fan of realistic graphics, Tekken 8, DMC5 and FF16 are the exceptions), buggy at launch, boring gameplay loops, microtransaction-filled, be forced online bullshit and whatever other negative AAA thing we can think of.
I hate to see everyone getting layed off, but we all know that the gaming industry has been a mess and the times have changed when it comes to culture. Don’t be surprised if Ziff Davis might put IGN up for sale in 2025, but people need to move on from games journalism. I know it sucks and yes, I will miss GamePro, EGM, and the rest of the gaming magazines, but preservation is key. We still have Retromags and Internet Archive. Hell, even someone put up some videos from the Game Informer vault on the Internet Archive site. I think it’s safe to say, everything that we know and love as a kid is over. E3 is dead, Geoff Keighley already passed his expiration date after GameTrailers shut down, the entire console generation is a farce. I’m telling you guys, the next gaming industry crash is upon us.
We are in a strange age of a lot of things shutting down. But as much as IGN was good, and so was G4 and a few others. Nowadays... it isn't good anymore. Gamers rather get opinions, note opinions, from youtubers then reviews from big official websites. Because at least, it isn't automatically a 7/10.
•I agree with your point. I have personally lost faith in IGN years ago when it came to their takes/ reviews. •Let’s just say 2 games come out this year and they’ll give one a 7 and the other one below a 7. The one that scored below a 7 in the eyes of the gamer was a great game but the one that scored a 7 was horrible for example concord. Plus more than half the people on there don’t even play games lol. On the latest episode of podcast unlocked Miranda openly came out and said she’s never been interested in the Witcher games but won’t play the prior 3 games but will play 4 because of the audiences reaction to the game awards trailer…It’s like when people went to go see endgame and infinity war but didn’t watch any of the prior marvel movies that led up to it. (Plus she said Astro boy was a bad game but didn’t even sit down to actually play the game lol how can you judge something you haven’t given a chance). And another example is Max from podcast beyond who would go on next gen console watch a podcast were one side defends the Xbox platform and one side defends the PlayStation platform and he openly never defends PlayStation like lol it defeats the purpose of the show. It’s like having a lawyer who is suppose to defend you in court just give up and not defend you mid trial. It makes no sense to have businesses like IGN when there are TH-camrs who would give me better insight on a game with data to back it up. •PS sorry to see Kat Bailey leave IGN I was a big fan of hers.
Its because they all seem to hate gamers... especially kotaku.
True
Also they seem to not play video games nowadays, they are more interested into POLITICS than VIDEO GAMES

9:32 "I wish they would go back to as good as they were a couple years back"
WTF?! Those sites have been trash A LOT LONGER than a couple of years. These site started hating gamers about a decade ago and started making their coverage about everything BUT the games and hardware. They started being activists and writing truly absurd stuff. Here are a few from memory...
One site said Person 5 DLC had a song that made fun of disabled people
A reviewer for the site complained about how hard their review of the Xbox Series X and how they could never own one because all the small holes triggers a phobia they have. Another used a PS5 review to complain about the state of the country
One complained about how Barbra Gordan was handled in Arkham Knight and then had to apologize and admit they were wrong because THEY DIDN'T FINSH THE GAME
They were mad at how police were seen in media and that Spider-Man was friendly with the police in the game
They were mad that the main character was wh_te in Days Gone and that the main character made compliments about HIS WIFE'S GOOD LOOKS and them flirting with each other
I could go on but I think I've illustrated just how bad they've been.
I love what they were.I don't like what they are now. They attacked gamers. They went woke and now they're broke.
And the guy that you're covering Daniel Bloodworth. He's with easy allies. I was their number one fan for over 10 years more. Even earlier- Since there were game trailers and they completely went woke. Anti community comments. They attack their own community. They lost half of their staff, that is, they quit and they're also losing.
hi DreamcastGuy
Hey everybody!!! Are the words Wayback Machine says something to you?
Stella Chung got from IGN after they ok her to take a sponsorship deal for herself. She was on IGN Unlocked podcast nearly every week
Merry Christmas i guess.
Happy christmas and merry new year
I want more journalism just for game reviews and I don't want it to be gone forever!
Gamers want to know about the games not how games don’t cater/pander to specific audience/demographic and how that somehow ties into the writer’s life story…
We want to know if the game is good or bad not “oh it’s a good game but I deducted points because I’m not a fan of this genre” or “it’s lacking in ambiguity in terms of whatever”.
I miss gaming magazines so much. Id be willing to pay the equivalent to 10-15$ subscription a month if they came back
People are too lazy to read. I think that’s 50% of the reason. TH-cam isn’t necessarily a force for good.
The only big news outlet i care about is Digital Foundry
Who IGN owns now 🤑
@@Aragorn7884 they are just as bad
I think we look for reviewers that mirror our own opinions. Like I trust the shere hunter or Reggie when it comes to survival horror or rageselect when they talk souls like games. If a reviewer has similar taste it is more likely their opinion will mimic you.
Reggie is my go to for survival horror 👊 very knowledgable and all round nice guy
🕺 the idea that layoffs are purely a negative is ultimate brain rot 💃
Sometimes people can be described as “filth”.
And nowhere is it easier to see than Game Journos HATING THE HAND THAT FEEDS THEM!
None cares about game magazines anymore players just turn into content game creators
Basically
To watch content they steal from journalists.
The problem is main media give reviews of personal and political representation and not just the games MERIT
Dude, first time watching . I trust you more than ANY journalist.
LMAO... You are up for a rude awakening after you realized how biased and blindly he talks about games.
Trusting Dreamcast guy is like trusting a scorpion not to sting you.
I'm glad Dreamcast guy has a level headed take on this. People in these comments spitting vitriol at people losing their livelihoods is evil.
When I worked for Game Informer I would get free trips to Japan and I would waste Gamestop's money on tan blonde Japanese call girls.
HA HA! SUCK IT GAMING JOURNALISM! YOU TOO BIG BUDGET WESTERN AAA GAMES!😈
It’ll be a joy watching video game journalism and big budget western AAA titles go up in smoke.
'Journalists'
Puff piece writers and activists.
Name me one piece of journalism they actually did.
IMO it died when reporting games took a backseat to personal politics. They forgot they’re game journalists, not activists whose take we want to hear.
Bloodworth works for a woke company that alienated most of their fanbase.
I hope Gamefaqs stays around because it is usually more helpful than TH-cam when you need help in a game.
maybe if they reviewed games and not push agendas may be this would not been the case
I used to be fan of ign now I only go to ign guides
Having a bluesky account is a red flag to me .
Fer real
