  • A bob course of Stedman Cinques, taken on the Young Ringers' Facebook Group Outing on Saturday 22 July 2017; I realised recently that I never got around to uploading this one! Oops! Thanks to Charlotte for filming, and Jake for his photo of the fine ceiling carvings.
The Cathedral bells are certainly an interesting ring, with an equally interesting history. Six bells were transferred from Osney Abbey in 1546; the present 9th and 10th, datng from c1410, survive from this ring. The other bells have been recast and subsequently augmented, first to ten in 1680, then to twelve in 1897. The bells were moved to a wooden structure in 1872, referred to as the ‘meat safe’, and the tower built around this.
The "go" of the bells is not brilliant, with 10 and 11 being particularly challenging to ring, and they sound as expected for a mixed bag of old bells. It's a long way up to the ringing chamber, and one has to crawl through part of the tower structure to get into the ringing room! That said, they certainly are characterful - and note the amount of pig paraphernalia in the ringing room! Parts of the Cathedral were also used for filming in the Harry Potter series
