DeVante called Puffy a cheerleader in an interview! I think because puff was in with management he was able to get permission and push the idea for what Jodeci were looking for in style... If u look at Jodeci's first video's they all dressed similar and did dances in a boy group style which all R&B acts were doing - now that would definitely been under puff's direction. Then by Diary of a Mad Band their style changed to the Jodeci format, which was DeVante & Dalvin's vision for the group. Puff has even said in an interview that he learnt a lot from DeVante back then. I think Puff can be credited for having the ability to sell/approve Jodeci's own vision to upper management, but in terms of his vision he was simply emulating every other group at the time. His music proves this because he hardly came up with any good original music himself. Everything was sampled. He definitely has the talent of a business man but not a true musician.
lol.... I saw that! Devante seemed like he was over the BS of Puffy getting credit for "creating" Jodeci's style. He said Puffy was an intern, who used to watch them perform from the side of the stage! I don't think anyone could "create" what Jodeci was doing. They were way too authentic. There's a lot of misinformation in this piece.
KD Rossman Many people out there also believe that Timbaland is the musical genius behind Jodeci & Da Bassment!! Saying DeVante stole his style and sound and didn't credit him for a lot of stuff. Now, we seen recently that Timbland is going to help produce on the new Jodeci album, which again retards have began to say that Tim is going to produce the whole album! My point is that if DeVante had stole your style and sound, didn't credit you for stuff and also treated you like shyt WHY are you back in a studio working with him again??!
To take credit away from what Puff brought to the table and his part in Jodeci is just wrong. Devante saying he was a cheerleader..nothing wrong with that. Don't make it into something negative. Remember, Uptown had Jodeci in suits until Puffy stepped in.
NotyNoty Actually, Dalvin said Andre gave them a wardrobe budget and they, as in Jodeci, came back with the black baggy jeans and boots. Puff played a part in convincing Andre to go along with the saggy pants and the combat boots. etc. Dalvin also said mngt. bought them those white suits for the FML video, and they cut the legs and turned them in to shorts.
I think puffy gets really too much undeserved credit for the successes of both Mary J . Blige and especially Jodeci. Did he write any of their material ? Did he produce the music? Did he give Devante and the rest of the group their swag .? The answer to all these questions is an emphatic NO!!!!!! If anything he almost sabotaged it by insisting that Gotta love be Jodeci's first release and when it failed to make an impact it was the release of the Forever my lady Single ( which was written by Devante swing and Al B. Sure!) that rescued the talented quartet. Puff may have played some role but it certainly wasn't all that .
Jodeci said they wanted to dress the way they did. Puffy is the one who convinced Andre H. to go along with it, and I think that's why he gets credit. And no, Puff didn't give Jodeci their swag. DeVante in particular, had swag for days.
Kimberly Greer I saw that interview recently Anybody could have told Andre that .The random guy on the street could have done that. That's all it took to steal all the credit. He gets more credit for Jodeci than Jodeci.
I totally agree. jodeci did there own music. Al b sure helped them on their first album. Puffy only did one remix and helped with styling but hell they didn't really work with him. The true producers of marys first album are Dave hall and mark and Corey puffy didn't do anything major. Hell truth be said chucky Thompson is the master mind behind the my life album
+Kayode Martin You are so right.... Just like Devante said in a interview years ago "Puffy was a cheerleader". I really don't understand how Diddy can get credit for Jodeci. For starters he didn't discover them, their first album was already written before they even went to uptown.
Damn this video makes it sound like it was all Puffy's idea on Jodeci's style and look. Thats Bullshit. Jodeci was always like that, way before they got the record deal. Even though they grew up in church, they also grew up carrying guns, having lots of sex, and a lot more gangsta shit. K-CI and Dalvin met at gun point. DeVante said " You know what they say, We were the sons of a Preacher." Jodeci made it cool for gangstas or bad boys to sing. Like 4 gangstas chillin and singing on the corner.
Me, my brother and my cousin's watching on the television on Soulphrodisiac of Vh1 Soul with that music video Jodeci - "Forever My Lady" and I was dancing that song that's my favorite song.
