BRAND NEW PIGLETS! Triumphs & Heartbreaks

  • Our sow "Red" had her piglets! And she had a GIANT litter of 17 piglets! Red has always been a good Mom, rarely stepping or laying on a piglet. But that changed with this litter, and she has lost almost half of them. Why did this happen? How can we fix it for future litters?

Pete I've been raising pigs for almost 50 years and we've done it every way there is crates, pasture, together with others and individual pens. We like the individual pens best kinda like your setup. I think you hit the nail on the head with your 2 problems the extra bedding slows the pigs down and mom's size. All in all she's a great sow and I would try to get several more litters from her with your adjustments. If it was easy every body could do it. It's hard to lose them buy it happens but we love baby pigs on the farm. Keep up the good work and God bless you all

Dear Pete & Hillary, I have never made a comment on any videos before. This is a first for me. I sincerely admire the both of you being real and respect you for not being affected by negative comments. I can relate to losing the baby piglets. I was raised on a 165 acre family farm that my grandparents bought around 1920. We had 25 dairy cows, 1600 laying hens, and 40 brood sows. the hogs were my favorite and I knew the pain of losing baby pigs. My wife and I are retired on 2 acres only 5 miles from where I grew up in Northern Kentucky. We have been here since 2012 and I have 300 laying hens and we raise our own meat birds. We sell our eggs here at the barn, self serve honor system. My favorite part of your videos is the restoration of the Formal MD. My Dad and Grandpa had a 1948 MD that I grew up with as a kid. Before that was a steel wheel Farmall F20, that was before me. Keep up the good work! P.S. I was born in 1943, you never get too old to have chickens!! Dave

The ones who would say I told you so aren’t true farmers. I have learned in my short life on this earth that no matter what techniques you use in farming animals are unpredictable and you can’t ever have all the right answers! Everyone who has invested time in your videos knows you aren’t reckless or careless! Keep up the great informative videos!! Thank you for sharing!

Hi Pete, well don't beat yourself up too bad, its obvious how much you care about your pigs. and their care. and even though Red is allowing you many gestures in her handling and being in the pen with her, There is always a chance. for her to step on one, roll on one (or more) she's a good size now and its difficult for her to mover around. and feed them etc. and in dong so. she can't keep track of all of them all the time and accidents will happen. To be honest, I was surprised watching that last batch etc. that you did not encounter more of what just happened. before now. You have done a good job in the past and I"m sure you will do your best to take care of her and the litter's to come as well as this one. And as you your self said. It's part of farming. Thanks for taking the time to share them with Us I really like watching her and the litters and even you in there with them is enjoyable to watch Thanks again for sharing and God Bless Pete.

👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🗽🙏🏻 Enjoyed! Spent many winter night hours as a teenager (in the fifties) in the farrowing barn making sure delivery went well. We rotated 10 sows every six weeks or so. Some sows were great some were a royal pain….she would deliver one little one and then get up move around and lay back down. We used heat lamps and a couple 2x6's across the corner of the stall to protect the pigs and the heat lamp. You’re a good farmer…..kind to your animals and attentive to there needs! Enjoy the tractor maintenance videos.

What a lot of non-farmer a d ranchers do not understand is that nature will take its own course. You can do many preventive measures and things just happen. What do they think happens to free range livestock. Y’all are very aware of the needs of your livestock at all times. You cannot move them into the kids bedrooms to keep a closer eye on them. Thank you for all that you share with us and no sugar coating. I was raised on a farm and ranch. I have a small goat herd and a vegetable garden now. Looking forward to the next installment.

The piglets always make me smile. I spent many hours being entertained by them as a kid going up on a small dairy farm. Our next door neighbor was a big a big pig producer. Every time he had runts he’d bring them down to my mom to hand raise. They ended up being my pets and playmates as a little kid.

  • @whitby910

I lost piglets even when I had everything in place to prevent it. One spring, I had a farrowing ark set up in a paddock, The sow chose to ignore the ark and cut the long grass, make a huge heap of it, after which she burrowed into its centre and farrowed about 3-4 days latter. The first we knew she had was about 2 days after that when 14 piglets appeared. At night and when alarmed they would disappear into the compost heap. The sow lost no piglets. She was a large white and had only, until then known concrete and straw, as had her ancestors for many generations. Quite amazing.

One of the reasons I follow you is the way you treat your animals. Giving them freedom and good care. And it happens in the farms with all kinds of precautions too, only the animals don't have a good life. You leave them in one piece, cherish them, and seeing your face, love them too. Living next to two farmers who treated their animals as a heartless cash flow makes me know for sure that doesn't make a profit in any way.

As a fellow that grew up with cattle and a mixed farm, I don't know anything about pigs, but I do know that you make decisions based on what you think is best from past experience, and sometimes it just don't work out. We had a crop rotation plan that has been great for more than a decade, then one funny year of weather and it can go to heck fast and you start to second guess yourself, if you should have tried something different, but in the end the best laid plans are just that, plans, and you sometimes have to overcome and adapt. Much Love from Canada!

Sorry for the loss. Glad you showed and talked about it - such is the life of a farmer, I suppose. Do what you can and what you think is right and what the odds have shown you as the right move in the past, yet sometimes the dice come up against you. Being right 9 times out of 10 still sucks on that 10th time...but regardless, you were right the other 9 times. Don't let the naysayers get to you.

Many moons ago, my first wife and I brought a calf back from the farm due to cold weather and his sluggish mannerisms. We thought we'd get him into the warmth of our in-town home (in the garage to be sure), bottle feed him, and he'd be fine. Not so. We lost him and even though he wasn't a pet, it was, as you well know, heartbreaking. Losses in farm life are inevitable, and it doesn't mean you're to blame. You're doing the best you can with the facts and resources available.

I'm so sorry for the loss of some piglets. Don't let negative comments get to you - some people truly don't understand what goes into farming. All we can do is the best we know how - none of us has a crystal ball.
We love your show and look forward to it! And that black piglet is a cutie pie! I'd be tempted to keep that one!! Have a great day too!

Man what a great video. Yeap, death on the farm is the most stressful part of farm life , especially the very young. Pigs are so smart. The piglets fighting over one certain test was funny.

A former co-worker of mine would say, "there's always room for improvement." It's a great philosophy in my opinion. It allows for shortfalls but with the optimism that one can achieve a higher level with another go at it.

Sorry you lost so many. I know it is an unfortunate aspect of farming but like you, we often are hard on ourselves when we loose an animal. It's hard when things don't go right. I think you're setting a good example by being honest and sharing with people how to learn from things like this on the farm.

I have been farming part time for 40 years and continue to learn and grow. That’s what separates successful people in all careers. Very few things are the same as they were even a decade ago. Continue to change and you will continue to prosper.
