    If you don't cry during this scene or at least get watery eyes, you have some sort of emotional impairment.

      Hi, Jesse. I've seen this "Joy Luck Club" movie so many times. I have some of Amy Tan's books, including this "The Joy Luck Club". I own the soundtrack & movie as well. But yeah, I teared up again watching this clip. Ming Na Wen's character, June, is my favorite character from this story. Anyways, yeah, I agree with you that a person would have a heart of stone to not shed a tear while watching this. There were many parts of this film where I teared up because I'm Asian American & can relate to some of the situations that were shown in this film. Have a nice holidays & a good 2015!

    They couldn't translate the last bit where they called each other meimei "little sister" and jiejie "big sister" instead of just lazily put [Chinese]....it would've made the scene even more touching for western audiences to see them addressing each other as sisters.....

  • @austen98
    @austen98 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    As an ethnic Chinese, I never understood the significance of this scene till years later, it's about family and the connections therein. It didn't matter that their mother had passed, but that her spirit lives in their little sister June and she is here to share their mother's hope and dreams for her daughters.

      See the rest. This is definitely the most emotional part of the whole movie but there are some other great stories that are strangely relatable and tear-inducing. It is really an underappreciated gem, imo.

    Jesus! I was having such a great day. I come across this 2 minute video and now I’m a sobbing mess! I should have just pulled out a tooth and I’d be in less pain than now. What a sad, emotional scene. The baby in the bath scene (not spoiling- but you know which one) traumatized me for life when I watched it when I was 13. But this scene is just as emotional. This movie is so unforgettable and extremely underrated!!!

    DEFINITELY one of the most heart wrenching scenes, in one of the BEST FILMS of 1993.
    The one where their mother had to abandon her twin baby girls, was like a knife, through
    the heart. Fortunately, this scene end on an uplifting note.
    (When I saw this film in the theater, there were EVEN ADULT MEN WEEPING.)
    Crazy Rich Asian doesn't touch this MILESTONE MOVIE, by a thousand kilometers.

    This movie inspired me to learn some Mandarin in college. When I learned what “meimei” and “jiejie” mean, and watched it again for the way they expressed it through the tones with such deep longing and sad-sweet feeling, it clicked, like listening to music. The subtitles don’t do it justice. 😭

Not to mention that the whole time sentences were translated and then a phrase is left simply to "Chinese". I get that it might not translate over properly but at least attempt.

      oh actually they were just calling each other "sisters":
      "Jie jie" is how you call your elder sister, and "Mei mei" is how you call your younger sister in Mandarin.
      So they were tearing up and calling each other "Jie jie" and "Mei mei" for the fist time.

    • @Croxby1
      @Croxby1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Also, the subtitles in this video literally cover every spoken sound. Where as in the movie, Jie jie and Mei mei are left untranslated. Much more powerful without the hand holding.

    It's a beautiful moment but I prefer the book version. I haven't read in a long time but I remember there is no dialogue there. I think the dialogue here is too mawkish or sentimentalist. Less is more, and the book is paradoxically conveying more emotion but with more subtlety.

    I was born in the late 90s so I didn’t rlly watch it then til later til like 2007 when it came on after charmed n cuz I liked Asian culture I watched it and this movie was the bomb and the ending had me sobbing. It was soo sad. It’s always neat to see different cultures and their ppl n their different walks of life in a country that makes life a hard walk. I like old movies or movies based in old times of how it was back in the day. Ex the country Germany during WWII from the citizens POV vs Hitlers POV and America blacks vs American whites in the 60s and segregation. I actually saw a movie bout a mixed race German child during WWII. And how other mixed races Germans were being treated. I watch scientist on ancient Egyptians and I also read the Bible bout Hebrews and Egyptians mostly at that time. I saw the Royal tailor was an great Korean movie bout the royalty and a poor tailor who brung a new era of clothing n the royal tailor was jealous of poor tailor because the queen preferred the poor one but the king didn’t. The poor tailor was young like 18 looking but the royal tailor got him killed. Cuz of his jealousy. The story of Ip man during WWII wen the Chinese was taken over by the Japanese n ip man fought the Japanese n won. Stories like these I love reading n watching about to see how things were different back then n that we shouldn’t repeat history. But outta hardships comes the greatest stories.

      @maggiechan33 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @msairs
      I don't think so. For me, this was the MOST TRAGIC SCENE, in the whole movie.
      Su Yuan WAS A GOOD MOTHER TO HER TWINS, even though she "abandoned" them.
      She is Chinese.
      She felts she was CLOSE TO DYING. For the Chinese, babies NEXT TO A DEAD PERSON,
      IS EXTREMELY BAD LUCK, + most likely, will not be rescued.
      That IS WHY Su Yuan left all her worldly possessions, with the Twins, INCREASING THEIR
      CHANCE OF BEING RESCUED. (also more $, if the Twins were taken to their Father)
      She REALLY SACRIFICED for her Twins; besides leaving them WITH ALL HER POSSESSIONS,
      + a note RE taking them to their Father, with the promise of more $, SHE ALSO WENT "TO DIE"
      AWAY from the Twins. Su Yuan DID NOT CARE ABOUT HERSELF; she did EVERYTHING TO
      INSURE THE TWINS WILL BE RESCUED. (She even cried for help from the passing jerk,
      whom, also played the part of An Mei's Mom's violator)
      This was during the Sino-Japanese War; A VERY DIFFICULT TIME FOR CHINA.

    • @skylx0812
      @skylx0812 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The father explained the mom was very sick and thought she was dying. She had to leave the babies because if she died next to them no one would take the babies because it was bad luck. So she had to leave them by the road and die somewhere away from them.
      I think he said she collapsed somewhere and when she came to she was in a hospital or something. I saw the film years ago and always remembered this ending.
