    Spoiler Saver & Riddle
    If you one 11 minute hourglass and one 13 minute hourglass, how can you accurately time 15 minutes?
    Good luck on this one!

    • @saturnuria1217

      Riddle Answer
      Start both hourglasses at the same time. Stop the 13 minute hourglass when the 11 minute one runs out.
      Start the full 11 minute hourglass and the 13 minute hourglass (which now has 2 minutes left) at the same time. Stop the 11 minute hourglass by putting it on its side once the 2 minutes is up.
      Start the full 13 minute hourglass again. When its finished, start the 11 minute hourglass (which has 2 minutes left on one side).

    OMG. I had this car as a kid. My father went to the shop with me and we bought it with the money I saved. I still remember where the shop was.
    I screemed proportional steering before the bubble wrap was off the box. My father told me about the steering and told me to get it. It must have been 1980 or 1981. Mine suffered from a human foot and since no 3d printer and lack of spare parts it was binned.
    Unfortunately my father passed away 6 years ago and my mother a couple of months ago (just a gentle reminder to always hug the people you love and you take for granted). Thanks for the trip down to memory lane.

    The trim might get off because the potentiometer inside the car needs cleaning. Like it is now, the center will never have the same value, because of dirt on its carbon track. Taking it apart again and cleaning the pot with some contact cleaner (which might be too agressive) or better Deoxit Fader or tuner cleaner, which are plastic and carbon track safe, might do the trick for more precise center trimming. This car worked way better and seems to be way more fun than i initially thought! ^_^

    Might be worth investing in an 8k photon resin printer, they can do insanely small prints and are extremely detailed compared to the most expensive FDM. Downside handling resin etc is not pleasant but might be a great investment for the repairs. You can get different resins to handle higher load strength as well.

    That potentiometer is what gives feedback to achieve proportional steering. It is similar to a servo but in an analog system.
    I’m pretty sure that’s why you cannot trim it perfectly. The tolerances on the pots/resistors must be high enough to cause that issue.

    Clean the potentiometer out on the steering with deoxit to solve the trim issues. That is the position sensor for the steering so if the contacts in it are bad then your trim and steering will have issues.

      I was going to reply with the same advice. But I would also add that the pots in the transmitter should be cleaned as well. The RC circuiry is trying to equalize the resistance of the two pots by turning the motor in the correct direction.

  • @digihorse6730
    @digihorse6730 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Vince the potentiometer is what gives you the proportional steering. What i imagine happens is you select for example 10% right turn on the steering. The motor for the steering turns in the direction to give right. The pot then moves until it arrives at a position where it feedbacks ( a resistance) the position of the steering as being 10% then the motor would or should stop. So if the pot is noises (dirty) then you would get very erratic response, as the control system will keep applying more or less right or left to try and achieve a 10% feedback from the pot ( which is now jumping all over the place if it’s noisy). The steering motor speed is adjustable too enable quick or slow response of the steering and feedback. If you didn’t have that you would only turn corners at one rate of angle so wide or narrow turns would be impossible as only one rate of steering movement would be achievable.

    • @digihorse6730
      @digihorse6730 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I expect you already suspected that anyway. But hopefully I’m a bit right?

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are right Digi, I should have cleaned out the pot and then it may have been perfect. It won't take long to do and I now have a spray version of a contact cleaner so a few quirts of that might do the job. Thanks for commenting and sharing the workings of it 👍👍👍👍

    You can certainly 3D print very small gears with a resin 3D printer, but not with a regular filament-based printer. For example, there's a particular plastic gear in the floppy drives of vintage Macintosh computers that always breaks, and there are a couple of guys on eBay who sell 3D printed replacements that work fine. The main issue for doing repairs like yours is that you have to have a digital model for the exact gear you want to print, which is unlikely for some random toy from the 80s.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jabba, others have mentioned resin as well. Yeah I wouldn't be able to 3D model anything right now and I presume even with a few months experience, a tiny gear like that would be very hard to get the measurements just right on 👍👍👍

      Are there not like gear stl generators? Like I'd imagine one wouldn't be too hard to make but I guess there would be a bunch of variables and it'd be hard to get precise measurements on a small cog

    • @MightyJabbasCollection
      @MightyJabbasCollection 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FirstnameLastName-mr8lk I’m sure there are ways to programmatically generate gears to print, although I don’t know the details. Probably you can easily generate simple gears but not specialized ones. Not to mention that 3D printing is sort of a hobby unto itself so it’s not something I would recommend starting if you just want to make some gears

    you 100% could 3d print a gear, with a FDM style printer it would be very crude even with the smallest nozzle possible. However IMO ( just so I'm not crucified in case I'm wrong) you definitely could use a Resin style printer as some have Incredibly high definition and also super accurate

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the comments today is the first I have heard about a resin printer. Time to 'Google' it I think 👍👍👍👍👍Thank you

      @@Mymatevince absolutly, cracking bits of kit, It has a learning curve to say the least, But they can do amazing things. Probably best to just stick to buying gears though if I'm honest, unless it's a very hard to buy. The printers are definitely pricy, especially just for some gears lol.
      Fantastic video as always though 👍

    Not to do with this but you got me going on the have a go yourself I’ve had 3 replacement dash cams speakers failed on them all took dash cam apart never seen a speaker like it before then somehow realised it was the same speaker as a ps4 controller hard to get the speaker out solder on works perfectly keep fixing

    orrrrrrr, you could get yourself one of those small Chinese lathes and make hose tiny gears out of metal. that may actually be an even more efficient tactic. you're correct on 3d printing not being extremely accurate, but a baby lathe may be able to handle those small ones. seeing you do some lathe work would make for some great vids as well :D keep it up m8!!!

    as soon as I saw the title, I thought....broken plastic gears. 3D printers can make the cogs in great detail. I think the resin ones would be more suitable.

      Resin printers are new to me Emma, I need to Google them to see what's what. Thank you 👍

    • @DEmma1972
      @DEmma1972 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mymatevince The regular 3d printer uses filament which comes on a roll and normally its PLA. There are other medias including wood so it can be stained and varnished even (which is kind of cool). The resin ones use a laser! to harden layers in a resin media which then need UV light to cure.

    You should have checked the resistance of the potentiometers, they could have rough spots like volume knobs and get noisy, that's why the trim is drifting.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Thomas, yes I should have and given it a clean as well and then it may not have drifted out. I will take it apart again one day and spray cleaner into it 👍👍👍

    I think the caps need replacing Vince they are probably out of spec now and not filtering the frequencies properly, it shouldn’t turn the wheels when your pressing forward should it, that steering mechanism is like a crude servo, the pot is used as a feedback. As for the trim toys rc cars were always crap like that, real cars are setup with toe in/out, caster and camber so that the wheels track straight and come back to centre after turning, your not going to get that on a toy car

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gower, yeah I was probably asking too much expecting it to be like the Tamiya models I have. I will try cleaning the steering pot though as many have said that may be the cause for the drifting in the trim 👍👍👍👍

  • @JohanFroloff81
    @JohanFroloff81 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the hole in the steering bar is bigger than the diameter of the plug. in the gear. that would make the trim uneven.

    Capacitors needs a flyback/feedback protection diode on the motor (or at latest stage connected to it) when connected to a motor otherwise capacitors can be ruin by negative feedback of the motor to the capacitors (or other components in the circuitry that doesn't like feedback).
