    It honestly blows my mind that she was able to get money out of these millionaires. Clearly they gambled and lost. Her creepy obsession with Steve Jobs was ridiculous. And her voice was the weirdest act I've seen in a while.

    • @Comrade.Question
      @Comrade.Question 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That voice, especially the clip where she slipped up and spoke in her normal tone, it just sound ridiculous - like I'm almost suspicious that the video creator slowed down the audio.

    • @Emily-ck9ji
      @Emily-ck9ji 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Comrade.Question Oh no - that's real. You can look up all of her interviews to compare. She thought it made her sound authoritative, so she put on the act. The problem there was... Her old professors/schoolmates/partners kept exposing her. She apparently didn't think she could be taken seriously in her field because she was a woman (which, to be fair, is true), so she pretended to be as "manly" as possible. Girl has some serious issues, but it worked. It's why she was so was largely obsessed with Steve Jobs - from hiring his old business partners, wearing his same clothes (turtlenecks), scheduling the same weeks and meeting days. Steve Jobs was a legitimate genius, however. Elizabeth? Took "fake it til you make it" to a whole new level.

    • @Comrade.Question
      @Comrade.Question 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Emily-ck9ji oh yeah I'm not saying they slowed the footage down, I'm just saying that she picked such a low tone for her voice it doesn't register to my mind as a genuine human speaking. Like it doesn't seem real, which makes sense since it wasn't, but when you hear both voices back to back it just makes me think "maybe just a little more subtle?" I dunno. Doesn't seem like subtle is part of her character though lol

    • @Emily-ck9ji
      @Emily-ck9ji 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Comrade.Question She was ridiculous. Lol. Nothing about her was real, so I wonder if she could separate herself from her character at that point. The whole issue has fascinated me for a couple years. The fact that such an obviously fake human being was able to bleed these big investors and businesses for several billion dollars in the end still confuses me. I think they signed up for the image rather than the idea - pretty, blonde, white genius takes over silicon valley. Instead they look like complete morons for investing into an idea that never sounded legitimate to begin with.

    Actually the thing about lowering your voice is a real thing most bussinness women use, because their higher pitched voice won’t get taken as seriously as a man with a lower voice.
    My physics teacher told us to lower our voices for exams because us girls won’t get taken seriously.
    It’s weird but it’s real.

  • @JoeyisDREADful
    @JoeyisDREADful 3 ปีที่แล้ว +136

    If you have a lower voice as a woman, to seem more polite, nice and agreeable, like for customer service, you're often advised to speak a little higher. If you have a higher voice and you're in business world or academia, you are advised to lower it to be taken seriously.
    It's really common and it actually does work.

    • @promontorium
      @promontorium 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeyisDREADful It literally doesn't. People have a mountain of bullshit excuses why the world doesn't just open up for them and worship them. Nobody gives a shit about you. Not your pitch, you. That's life. You're also not special, nobody gives a shit about me either. And nobody gives a shit about anyone reading this.
      I mention vocal fry because some people claim it's put on by people trying to make their voice sound deeper. For example it's become the de facto accent for San Francisco -New York techie women. They arrive with normal beautiful voices and then learn to sound like machines because it's what other women do (some men do it too). It's god awful.
      You know who takes people less seriously because of someone's pitch? Morons.
      I've got a whole bag of theories why women all of a damn sudden think their voices are a problem, but the fact is, people do not fucking care.

    I bought the audio for the book by John Carreyrou, the journalist who broke the story and one important thing to note is that her device did hurt actual people with serious illness. One of them even had to go through some serious surgeries and unnecesary treatements, because the info Theranos' device gave doctors led to them getting the wrong doses of medicines and/or misdiagnosis of cancer. She could've legitimately killed people. What's worse is that Safeway exec VP at the time showed interest in the deal with Theranos because her husband suffered from lung cancer, and his veins were wasting away from the needles. Honestly, that's something that made me the angriest. My Mom suffered from cancer too, and I remember the nurses having so much difficulty in trying to find any vein they could use. So she was trying to take advantage of that. It's disgusting.

      @@eren-yv6pn I don't know about bill gates but a lot of medical experiments are performed on population without consent. Say u have an illness but u don't have money to afford the medicine, u signed up for an experiment testing medicine for illness you have. Part of the question is that, people without choices consenting to this experiment isn't out of their own free will but out of necessity, etc.
      Also some vaccination testing is also performed children without consent (from a class on ethics I took) which lead to like a death or 2 of children.
      And India is very susceptible to this practice due to problem of poor healthcare infrastructure and population being unable to support for better healthcare.
      That said I don't know what people say about bill gates cus if he caused a scandal, it would probably have been all over the news

      Any technological progress is highly incentivised to exploit low cost labour. Slaves, colonies etc. are proof in time of Industrialisation. Now, corporates go to low regulated countries and exploit humans there for innovation.
      It's not gates fault. Apple has sweatshops, Dell has cheap tech support etc. It's fault of local govt. only for not protecting their citizens from foreign exploitation. Hell, in India's context, it is even worse. Despite an elected govt. , we are still being pseudo-ruled by foreigners because we have made incompetent fools our leaders
