"As you can tell I'm relatively new to this." -- uh, no I could not. Very professionally done and mesmerizing to watch! Loved the music choices and the clean narration. I'm not one who mods items myself...but maybe one day.
Thanks so much for the kind comments! To be honest I've been making silly little videos for my friends for as long as I can remember, this is just the first time I tried to make something for public consumption.
This was before I owned a third hand / helping hand (whatever you call it) so I had to improvise. I didn't own a desoldering station either. Makes me shudder, some of the soldering / desoldering sins I committed in my earlier days of modding. Still, it's all about the end result and that came out great!
@@ctrlaltrees I've tried those little jigs but something about a bit of masking tape to hold things down is just more convenient. I was serious about the Blu Tac haha! I use desolder braid for the rest, will get one of those Duratool desolder guns in time. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the kind comment. I'm now recommending the UAV mod over this one, I made a video on it here: th-cam.com/video/XjjghprXHnE/w-d-xo.html It's a huge improvement for not a lot more money. I also imported a load from the US and am selling them on at a very small profit so people in the UK / Europe can get their hands on them without getting hit with big shipping charges and import taxes.
There is a way to mod this without removing any components. Just add some resistors and one cap to the CD4050 , and you are good to go . And to work you have to add proper 5V to the CD4050, because it powered only by 3.7V or so. (Atari's mistake)
Great vid... I’m going to mod my Atari soon, think i will use rca ports as I don’t want to run the risk of someone in the future plunging the PSU 3.5MM jack into an AV port
This is a very good point and something I should have warned about in my video, actually. I haven't tested it myself but I imagine plugging the PSU into the AV jack would be a very bad idea!
By the way, I would consider the UAV mod over this one if you're confident enough to tackle it. It's slightly more difficult to install but makes a huge difference. I made a video on it here: th-cam.com/video/XjjghprXHnE/w-d-xo.html
The only version of an Atari 2600 I've got, is the excellent Flashback 2 plug & play, which is an actual 2600-on-a-chip, rather than an emulation like the original Flashback (NES-on-a-chip) and Flashback 3 onwards (ARM processors). It's a lovely little machine, already has composite output, and with a UK power supply of the correct type, will run happily on a UK television. It can be modded to have a cart slot, so you can use real 2600 carts too. I only wish Atari had used silver toggle switches, instead of big orange push-switches.
Hi Rees I have noticed that you have used pin ten of the ribbon cable for the ground connection, which is shown clearly in the second schematic in your video. But looking at the main schematic I can't see where pin ten is grounded. Could you clarify please (I know that pin three and six are suitable candidates) but I am slightly confused. Regards, Mark Affleck
This was such a long time ago I can't really remember the details but if I used pin 10 it must have been grounded on this particular console. If 3 or 6 look like better candidates in your case then I'd go for one of those instead 👍
Wow! How do you not have vertical alternate grey and black lines on your screen? I have bought half a dozen PAL Ataris off eBay and they all had this issue on various TVs tested. I even got a friend to do a composite mod for me and sill get this issue. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Hi. I wonder if you can offer any advice on an AV mod which doesn't work. The Atari 2600 was working via RF ok. I have assembled the mod per instructions I have seen on the Internet but I get nothing, no video or sound. Looking at your video I conclude that the audio is effectively passed through so I don't understand why I don't get sound at least. I have picked up the audio from the appropriate place on the main board. Any help would be appreciated.
@@ctrlaltrees Thank you. May I ask my question differently. Is the composite mod checks and "looking" for a match of Atari 2600 NTSC and a modern TV NTSC or it is not important al all , if the Atari is NTSC and the TV is in Europe ? Thanks Eran
Hey, thanks for the feedback! The ebay username is ctrl.alt.rees - I'm based in the UK if that makes any difference. I don't currently have anything for sale, I'm not a professional seller to be honest. You should be able to find them easily enough, there are always a few on there. That said I'm actually now pointing people in the direction of the Ultimate Atari Video mod from a company called The Brewing Academy. I literally just finished filming a video about it over the weekend which should be live in the next couple of weeks. It's slightly more expensive but a big improvement over the mod featured in this video. The installation is a bit more complicated but should be easy enough to follow along once my new video is done.

I like the use of Blu Tac when soldering, great tip!

Excellent guide, thank you.
Nicely done and very informative. Subbed.
Thanks for the kind comments and the sub! I'm working on some more Atari content that should be along shortly.
Nice clean mod and clearly described, thanks. I recently added a 2600 to my collection, not sure if I'll mod it though.

Nice! Yes, the Flashback 2 is a great option, especially with the cart slot mod. 👍
That was a good start. Just the music is a bit too loud.
When you say hooked up to my capture device, what is that and what is it used for? thanks

Can you suggest how to get my Atari 2600 to work with my modern tv? Does it need your mod? The tv says there’s no signal
Thanks
Mike
Hi
Is it important if the Atari is Pal
Or NTSC ( after the mod is done ) ?
Thanks
Eran
UAV is compatible with PAL and NTSC systems - on NTSC systems it will output NTSC, on PAL it will output PAL.

@@eranfeit It depends on the TV model, but most modern TVs support PAL and NTSC with no problems.
