  • @CDGActual

    The soundtrack was legendary, but so were the menu noises. It may seem like an odd thing to point out, but for some reason, those noises really made the game for me. When I played it as a kid, the noises and the music were what stood out the most to me, and when I came back to the game 20 years later, that's what I remembered.

    I always found GT3 to be special. Sure, it has way less cars and tracks than GT2 - While being more restrictive than the previous with its events. But I happen to enjoy the event structure, specially how it's divided on three different leagues where some events are repeated. It's a bit of a waste to do things like drivetrain challenges with a bunch of starter cars, you miss out on so many cars. While yes, it has shortcomings like any piece of media, it has its charm and I always enjoy coming back to it (minus those test track events) About tire wear, I find it's tied to each car and some are better than others. I don't really think tires can be managed in these classic GT games, the best bet is building a gap which allows you to cover your pitstop. Or play the pit strategy game with the AI.

    I don't play GT3 anymore, but I did enjoy my time with it over the years and I appreciate it for introducing me to the world of cars and racing games in general. The fact that it's still gets talked about 20+ years later is a testament to how groundbreaking it was back in 2001.
    Only negatives I have about it though are these:
    ·Test Course being overused in Simulation Mode (16 TIMES iirc) when it should've only been used for Like the Wind (which is a 20 LAP RACE smh)
    ·No new oval track that's half a mile in length. GT1 had 1 oval, GT2 had 2 ovals, but GT3 doesn't get 3?
    ·The Corvette C5R and Camaro LM use 4cylinder sounds despite being powered by V8s.
    ·Super Speedway (uninspiring name btw) looks so lifeless compared to its GT2 version. Same goes for Test Course.
    Not much else to say.

    The old GT games were hella neat and influential, but I sure wish it'd be easier to play them without having deeper knowledge about the way progression works. Not that long ago I tried getting into 3 and 4, and well, it went about as well as I had anticipated - softlocked myself out of GT3 after a difficulty spike early on, lol. Same thing in GT4. My only way out would have been grinding unrewarding cups (notably the Sunday Cup), which I wasn't willing to do. I'm tempted to rey, but the thought of making a *fourth attempt*, is simply baffling me.

    • @Q.A.D.D.
      @Q.A.D.D. ปีที่แล้ว

      In GT3 I can see it happening. In GT4 however, it's way too unlikely. Even if you are out of money, you can always do the licenses, that reward you some decent cars, even for bronze. Then you can also do missions, which reward you quite a lot of cash, plus some very good cars. You can do these without ever buying a car.

    • @proletarianrise10
      @proletarianrise10 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Q.A.D.D. Yeah, but it essentially proves my point about deeper knowledge. Even in GT4 which has so many licenses to pass. Last I tried that game I actually did them all, and I seem to recall being awarded a car I couldn't even use, and a toaster that was worse than my current car. In the only available cups (save for Sunday Cup), the opponents were noticeably faster than my heavily upgraded vehicle.
      If I ever give it another spin, I'd rather follow a guide or walkthrough step by step, I'm not making a fourth failed attempt... And honestly, I wasn't big on its off-road races either, enjoyed those more in the Colin McRae games...

    • @Q.A.D.D.
      @Q.A.D.D. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@proletarianrise10 I will admit, when I was referring to the licenses, the only good bronze car would be the mercury at the S license, but only with the gearbox. However I really can't see how you can't progress with an upgraded car, unless you really started with a slow car ( no shame though, I really like some slow pokes myself ). I am sure you could tackle the clubman series in the professional events. I understand it's kind of unintuitive, but GT4 was not design to have the events completed in a set order. I actually think this is part of the game's charm.
      Even if you don't know the reward cars, farming is inevitable, though there are good spots for very easy money. However the grind is present in all GT games, from my experience, at least for first time playthroughs.
      As for the rally events, I totally agree with you. However I do enjoy the wacky street races there, though they aren't that good either, I just find them fun.
      If you ever decide to to give GT4 a fifth attempt, I highly recommend you buy a Japanese used car. Usually you can find cars over 150 bhp quite easily, like a Silvia. If you are lucky, you might even find a skyline under 10k. Never buy a brand new car as a starter car, unless you did some missions before, for extra money.

    • @proletarianrise10
      @proletarianrise10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Q.A.D.D. You're right, you nailed it at the unintuitive progression, that's exactly what killed it off for me those three attempts. I actually can't remember whether the car I bought was new or used, but I seem to recall that it was used. I remember reading that buying brand new cars isn't exactly wise in this game.
      The grinding was also another aspect that really didn't do it any favor, especially since I didn't know which events to grind. I had enough money to buy a better car, such as the Silvia, which I did, but by the looks of it, I probably attempted the worst events, where even if I could overtake most drivers, the leader was damn near untouchable. Part of my problem was probably the fact that while I did have the money to buy a new car, I didn't have the means to also upgrade it.
      Essentially, lack of knowledge is what killed the games for me. I will probably give it a fourth try at some point since I was really enjoying it, but the inability to progress any further and not knowing which events would be worth grinding for some easy money, and once frustration settled in, I dropped the game. Next time I attempt it, I definitely won't do it without a guide or watching a walkthrough and following it step by step. I'm admittedly not used to simulators, so expecting to jump straight in the middle of the pool was perhaps not the wisest choice I made.

    • @Q.A.D.D.
      @Q.A.D.D. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@proletarianrise10 Honestly, following a walkthrough could spoil the experience, at least in my opinion. For me, it was always exciting finding out what car will I win in a new set of races. But I do get the frustration with money early on, so I will give you a tip for your next attempt to alleviate this problem.
      Do the second batch of races in the special condition events. The opponents are quite slow and, if you do both races, you get a car that can be sold for a lot of cash. A slightly tuned used Silvia should do the trick, though I recommend you always prioritise a racing chip, tires, exhaust and first weight reduction stage. While grinding here can get boring quickly, it's very good to consider it as a back up plan when you are low on cash. There is another better place to grind cash later on in B-Spec, however the reward is pretty cool so I wouldn't like to spoil it. :)
      With this, you can try almost any car for any race. You will find out that most races are very non restricting, as in, the Turbo only races will allow you to race a LMP Prototype even though the opponents are Lancers and Imprezas.
      Anyhow, whenever you decide to give GT4 a retry, I hope you will have a great time!

    I got Gran Turismo 3 for Christmas 2002, and it was one of, if not, the first PS2 game I've ever played. It was my first Gran Turismo game as well. I was 6 and it blew my mind. I fell in love with the game, and had to have Gran Turismo 4 when it came out, and I got even more obsessed with that game. I can say with certainty that Gran Turismo 3 and subsequently 4 helped me in the long run when it came time to learn how to drive in real life. And the music definitely has shaped my music tastes. Now revisiting and discovering a lot of jazz/jazz fusion as an adult. Gran Turismo 3 was really ahead of its time, and so was 4. I've replayed them both a couple years ago, and they're still impressive. The lack of damage physics always bothered me too.

    Can't say that it changed anything at all. But in 2002 I was (still am) a Dreamcast & PC owner and bought the PS2 mostly because of GT3, GTA3 and Winning Eleven 5FE. These three games were everything I wished to play for a good time.
    I already was a veteran of Gran Turismo (and not only GT... but also arcade racers and PC simulators) and the limitations of GT3 didn't bothered me... I saw it as a half full glass and dare to say that even if GT4 is a better game (and it is... in every aspect), the 3rd one gave me much more joy... probably because that when GT4 came it had some huge contenders released or to be so.
    Nice video... cheers!

    Commenting a bit late but still needed to say it. Gran Turismo 3 wasn't just the first GT game I played, it was the videogame I had ever played. When I got my ps2 my dad couldn't afford GT4 back then, so he got GT3 instead. We used to spend hours on super speedway and I clearly remember I always picked the Dodge Viper GTSR and he picked the Corvette C5R. I remember also crashing in the wall so many times, especially in the time trials where I eventually found out you need to brake at a corner 😂. With all of that, GT3 is the reason I love cars. Yeah, I wouldn't call it the best GT game ever made (Although it's definitely close) but it really is the game that kicked of my love for cars and videogames in general. I barely see my dad anymore, so I'm glad I still got GT3 to think about him. It ain't perfect, but damn this game is pure art

GT3 may have "only" 180 cars, but I prefer that to the more than 721 cars in GT4, where of those 721, more than 120 are Nissans and about 100 are Mazdas. For fuck's sake, there are almost as many Honda NSX models in GT4 as there are all the available Ford cars....
