I have the unofficial strategy guide from Versus Books way back in 1997 (the one with hand drawn art in it) and it was spelled Aerith in the book, so when I first saw her name as Aeris in game, I thought it was a mistake. Loved the video!
The original release game was Aerith too. There were two versions released.. I had the actual original, not the greatest hits western version. It is the correct name. Aeris was a western adaptation but more of a mispronunciation/spelling
An anagram is only an anagram if all letters are used. Also, why would the developers choose a name that is an anagram ONLY in the English version? On top of that, the Earth was never called the "Earth" in the game, but the "Planet"; an anagram like that in the Final Fantasy VII universe doesn't make any sense.
When translating from a language that has other characters, one should focus phonetically on the word in how to write it. "Aeris" was the right choice, as it is pronounced "Earisu" (エアリス) in Japanese; E-A-Ri-Su. When pronouncing the Su character (ス) in Japanese, there is a tendency to drop the "u" sound at the end. Therefore, it's "Earis" or "Aeris". It could be argued that the "ス" character is also present in Sephiroth's name (セフィロス) and therefore it should be "Aerith". However, there is a reason why his name in the English version is not "Sefiros" or "Sephiros": his name comes from the Hebrew word "Sefirot" (סְפִירוֹת), ending with a "t" sound. The Japanese alphabet simply lacks the phonetic sound for the "t" or "th", which is why his name is pronounced "Sefirosu" in Japanese.
The whole Aerith thing started in Kingdom Hearts - where Sephiroth also suddenly has a black feathered wing on his back (instead of a red-purple wing of solid mass in place of his right arm that he only has in his final form) and Squall was suddenly named Leon. The developers just changed their minds about some things after the release of the original game in 1997 and they projected it onto the fans.

I mean it's properly pronounced Aerith as that's the original correct name/spelling. Aeris was a common western mispronunciation....
Frankly, there is no "-th" sound in Japanese or in their alphabets. If you listen to their audio dub, they in fact pronounce it as "Aeris." It wasn't a mistake when her name was originally translated to that spelling. That's how transliteration works. The mistake, unfortunately, was in the original creator trying to give her a name that couldn't be spelled nor pronounced in his native language.

I for one was very young when ff vii came out so I didnt play it till after kingdom hearts made me currious of the final fantasy series(which I proceeded to play every and beat every title from 7 and on) and I was confused when the game said her default name was aeris and I was like "but they say aerith in kh" so i switched it aerith and player the game that way

I always thought it was Aeris until I saw Advent Children for the first time - then I was stuck with Aerith, but whenever I play the original game I need to still call her Aeris - good video about the best flower girl of all time!
That was one of the most ridiculous stories I ever heard lol but I liked it. I was surprised by the aerith at very first but some how I easily turned Aerith into a habit with there being multiple KH games with Aerith in it and pretty much just one main FF7. Could have chalked it up to the same reason why Squall is called Leon but I didn't.
If the "su" in her name was supposed to be a stand-in for the "th" in Aerith, but got transliterated as Aeris, that made made wonder if somewhere out there, there's an alternate universe where we got Aerith and Sephiros instead of Aeris and Sephiroth.

Aeris was an unfortunate mistranslation. Square has went out of their way since then to try to correct the issue. Her name has always been 'Aerith', but due to a translation issue right before the US release, her name defaulted to 'Aeris' instead by accident.
Don't feel bad, I always thought Zack was the ex-boyfriend that left Aerith, because of the lines,
Aerith: "What rank were you"

that one i would love to see although from my understanding it was always meant to be Tee-dus because Tidus and Yuna are meant to stand for the sun and the moon but because there was so much water in the game people thought it was Tie-dus as in the tide

If you use the GameShark to keep her in your party, her name comes up as Aerith. I assumed that was her name after she was resurrected. Aeris before, Aerith after. I convinced myself that revived Aeris was in the game, they just didn't program in the steps to get her back without cheating.

I don't think it was a mistake for her to be named Aeris. Rather, it was simply one translation of many from one language to another. If anyone researches it you'll understand why they went with Aeris. Aeris or Aerith are both imaginary made up names that have no meaning in either language other than the soul purpose for use in the FF7 universe. I don't think it's appropriate nor useful to correct someone using either name and whichever name they use in the remake will determine who is going to have to live with the way western audiences decided to pronounce her name. It's honestly a win-win situation because if you're on the side that cannot stand the way her name is pronounced by Western audiences then you get to look forward to her being killed by Sephiroth. So honestly everyone wins.

Funny thing, I played the NG flash game and because of that I've always known her as Aerith. Never played a FF game for very long, but that will change with the remake.
I've always preferred Aeris but after reading some behind the scenes development documentaries. The big switch for me was the intended comparison of her to SephiroTH.
They were supposed to be siblings and were tied to each other in a way. Also, in the Japanese original recording of the symphonic version of One Winged Angel the Japanese choir pronounces the One Winged Angel's name to be Sephiros.
Also, Aeris is also a homonym to heiress, which is fine but a bit too on the nose and poetically suggests royalty and snobbery, unlike the matronly earth like intentions of the original development team.
Regarding always playing in Japanese, I'll have to disagree on that. While this is generally true for local titles released later abroad, this is not true for titles that are developed from the ground up with an international audience in mind. Square Enix does have properties that fit this description and the modern day iterations of Final Fantasy fit this to a T. Having a broad mythological knowledge to help inform you of how things should be said or pronounced is fine though. Caith Sith = Ket Shee. Cloud was never meant to be pronounced Kurado, and Ifrit is Ifreet.
