I had a taxi drive in to my back wheel in a car park. The 4 invisible passengers made statements to say they were all injured, passengers paying for the journey, then said they were on the pavement and witnesses. I tracked them all down and found they were all related and the taxi driver was helped by a solicitor that become well known for scams. There was no interest in stopping the claim and I had to go to a court and give evidence. This went on for 18m and it was just for the insurers to get money. The people involved made multiple claims and were never prosecuted for fraud. I had to demonstrate that if I had passed a junction, and a taxi didn't stop at a give way line, it couldn't be my fault if he drove in to my back wheel. There were no records of any booked taxi journey either. Lots of things shouted fraud, but companies wanted to make money fighting each other. It was before car cameras.
When I spoke about these scams happening in London by ‘Overseas Visitors’ on Social Media 20 years ago I shot down in flames. They also deliberately walk into slow moving traffic to make a claim.
The fake homeless have started doing this in Liverpool. Not far from the YMCA hostels the "homeless" people live at, they beg from people stuck in traffic and then fall over.
I was stationary and got bumped from behind, at maybe 10mph. The only damaged was a cracked bumper. I'd probably not even bothered to claim, but the car was only a couple of years old, in beautiful condition, and I'd only had it a month. Months after the bumper was repaired, entirely at the other company's expense, I got a phone call from a company, offering to get me (and/or my non-existent passengers) a few thousand for "whiplash". In the following months, I got several more such phone calls, but I just kept hanging up the phone, without speaking, and eventually they stopped calling.
All vehicles should be fitted with all round cameras as standard. I also think that insurance companys should support and supply their customers with front and rear cameras
😢It's not just a "couple of grand" 3 years ago. A moped cut me up as I was crawling along in a traffic jam in Mitcham he suddenly stoped. l went into the back of him causing his plastic number plate to be cracked. He than placed the moped on the ground and took a photo. My insurance paid him over & £12,000 for a replacement scoter, whiplash injuries from 'lol' being knocked off his moped & the hire of a scooter for 3 months. My insurance company weren't interested in my account of what actually happened.
im a new moped rider since march this year been hit by 2 car drivers already who dont use mirrors 1 drove off and 1 put hands up admitted he didnt check but i was too naive to take details cause he told me dont worry its just a scratch when i found out an hour later the body was cracked completely. honestly so many drivers out there shouldnt be on the roads in the first place.
Shelly Comb, a great guest highlighting the interesting and important work the insurance companies undertake. And the numbers in London alone are mind boggling.
The elephant in the room is you can't make the money these opportunists make committing these frauds, from grafting an everyday "normal", poorly paid job. For many the risk vs reward, compared to the only other option of poorly paid work makes this very attractive way out of "the system", for an easier/better life.
Thje reason why your insurance goes up even if your not at fault, the insurers say it is because of the risk of you being involverd in another accident goes up.
Since we have 8 cameras around our car - a Tesla - I don't think this would be a problem for us. These scammers will be aware of this. Additionally, I expect we get a discount on our premium.
All insurance companies need to do is say to a suspect this is your last chance and then we no longer need or want your business or your money... come back in five years when we haven't heard your name again, do that nationwide?
Lol if they're dumb enough to do it on a Tesla it records EVERYTHING. So just call the police and say there's been an accident.. play along and get them arrested.
we are all paying for this. Another example where data showing country of origin & ethnicity needs to be published.

Happened to my Nephew. A car full of engineers jumped out of the car holding their necks.

How about if you cease moped claims until thoroughly investigated. People will stop using the stupid things for crimes
This is why I have 24/7 front and rear dashcams.
There are a certain group of people in our country, that have been doing this for in excess of 20 years.

I doubt they'd be able to make an insurance claim, if they were riding a stolen moped.
