I worked as loss prevention at a retail store years back. A good friend came to visit me, they shopped around and ended up going into the fitting rooms. On their way in they dropped a small item without realizing, and another customer in the fitting rooms noticed and grabbed it (presumably stole it). On their way out my friend realized they were missing an item and had a panic attack. When they came out they explained what they thought happened, showed the inside of their small bag, everything they could think of. The fitting rooms worker (against store policy) told them they stole and was very confrontational. All of the workers were alerted over the radios of the "theft". My friend got in line to buy the things they wanted but everyone kept staring at them so they eventually just set down the items and left while trying not to visibly panic. I felt so awful. I knew how bad things looked for them but know 1000% they didn't/wouldn't have stolen anything, and if I spoke up for them I could've lost my job. It would've been worth it cause that job sucked, but I know I wouldn't have been believed and it wouldn't have made anything better. Such a wild experience

This doesn’t have anything to do with stealing but one time I was at goodwill and there was one fitting room left. Someone had left a ton of clothes in there but I went in and brought out all the clothes I had brought in with me when I was done. This middle aged woman was being so rude causing a whole scene saying “don’t worry I’ll take care of the clothes since you brought them in and just left them” so everyone was staring at me. The clothes weren’t even my size which was so clear. I didn’t take them out because I thought maybe the person was still in the store and they were still looking and maybe they wanted to buy the ones in the dressing room. The way it works here:
1: We count the clothes ourselves
2: The tag goes wherever inside the change room, you just gotta bring it back again
3: There's a semi-imposed max. number of items you can bring in.
4: Like 80% of the time there isn't even an employee there enforcing anything anyway.
5: Finding an empty change room on a weekend is a nightmare

Hot topic had a smart way of dealing with this; limit the amount of clothes a customer is allowed in the fitting room, and the employee who is opening the door for you counts the items with the customer and then shouts to the other reps on the floor the amount the customer has. I.e. “hi, you need the fitting room? Ok and it looks like you have 4 items, unfortunately we have a 3 item limit. If you want I can hold onto this while you try on the rest and when you’re done, hand the merchandise back and we can start a new process if you saw something else that you wanted to try on.” Customer would either say put it back or hold it, then through out the store you hear “3” being called. The other employees have to say it back to confirm the number so we all are on the same page in case I’m helping someone else and another employee started helping the customer trying on merch.
Edit: or at least that was procedure back when I worked there 8 years ago 😂(god I’m old 😢)

Recently I went into a changing room with 4 items and needed a smaller size in 2 of the items so my boyfriend asked if he could exchange them with other ones and the attendant said yes so he went and came back but there was no smaller size in one of them so I only got 1 item back and it made me do a mini panic after trying everything on when I realised I had to leave with only 3 items and a label that said I had 4 but nothing happened so it was very anticlimactic but I was scared

Why don't they set down the items on a table and let the employees count then...?

Literally no one cares. I worked at the fitting room at Walmart. Nobody cared about anything unless a customer asked to wear something out of the store and it was usually a little kid excited about new clothes or one time a Waffle House waitress ran in to grab new pants because her work pants ripped during her shift. Retail employees have so few fucks to give.

This must be an american thing cause they dont do anything like that in australia, its just try in your clothes and hang them up or buy them when you're done
