    Awesome review. Been pondering the decision for the last couple of weeks whether I wanted to buy one or not, after having the opportunity to test one out for a day (shooting water bombers scooping on a lake, battling a wildfire). Watched your video just now and literally clicked "place order" online. Thank you for the honest and accurate review/video, cheers from Canada.

      Thanks Liam, awesome subject to try it out on, although not so great that they are needed. Hope they got The job done and no one gets hurt. If your shooting aviation I would really recommend the hand strap, there is an affiliate link on my gear page. It make everything much more stable and takes the pressure off your hand. Enjoy the lens. Look me up on Instagram and expect to see your pics using the lens on there soon.

      @@BrianNorthmorePhotography Many thanks Brian, I'll be sure to take a look at that hand strap. With the help of those bombers, they were able to put out that wildfire before it impacted nearby houses. Saved the day! Just followed you on Instagram as well.

      Excellent lens at least the Sport version, heavy but quality for a decent price, just wish the aperture was a bit faster and constant.

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed. But that’s where the price trade off comes, you can almost add 1k per F stop at this sort of focal length.

    I have the older one of these - the 150-500, but I like it so much that I'm ordering the 150-600 for another body as its also a slight step up from the 150-500.

    I’ve had mine for about a month and once I got used to camera/lens settings and optimised focus etc I am extremely pleased with it.. Contemporary lens is adequate and is light rain proof.. the sport lens is heavier and costs a lot more! No way I’m parting with the lens.. any more upgrades are going to be camera based!

    I do aviation and bird photography too and I recently bought this lens to go with the new Canon 90D body. Haven't got much chance to use it yet as it's been raining everyday here lol. It's monsoon season.

    I've had this lens for several months, and though the weight was somewhat daunting at first, I use a shoulder strap to help mitigate that. I can now shoot with it for a couple of hours without difficulty. It gets amazing shots of wildlife, which is why I bought it.

    Thanks for your practical review of this lens. Most useful suggestions for me were:
    Using a hand strap to spread the weight when using hand held.
    Putting it on a monopod when taking photographs of birds.

    Hi, Brian i am from Kenya and i do wildlife ... I just bought this lens a month ago and tested on my both bodies 7d2 and 5d3 and happy with images .... its a bit soft at 600mm but stopping down to f9 to 11 it gives good sharp images but only if the image size captured is aprox 70% in the view finder, .. one other focus problem I saw was it doesn't focus in haze if the subject is far due to compression. Otherwise it excels on both bodies. KEEP it.

    I've had mine now since late last year (2021) Here in Australia the Sports model was going to be around $1000 more so I stuck with the Contemporary version! I was at first a bit disappointed with the Auto focusing but now I have made some changes I am quite happy with it shooting Birds! I had started using it on one of my Full frame Canons but have since been using on one of My Crops for that extra bit of reach! And yes it is a heavy lens to be hand holding for long periods at a time

    I found my Canon 100-400 was not long enough for my bird photography so when the Sigma Sports 150-600 came out I bought it. A fantastic lens but I find it difficult to hand hold due to the weight so use it on a monopod or tripod. I have recently purchased a gimbal head but not yet used it. Focusing is lightning fast and it’s very sharp. I had sold my Canon lens but regretted it so bought the Tamron 100-400 which is also excellent but lighter for hand hold shots. I use the 7D mkII and 5D mkII and both lenses work well with them but the 7D II is my preferred wildlife body for distant subjects.

      Tony, It’s a great lens but like you say very heavy. When I use this a for aviation I can be Hand holding for a good 5 hours or more with a few breaks but its still tiring. I found holding the weight in my hand and wrist was the worst part. This hand strap really helped. This is a link from the gear pages on my website.

      @@BrianNorthmorePhotography I have a similar hand strap but not tried it yet due to Covid. I also like aviation photography and regularly went to air shows throughout the country with my late best friend but unfortunately he passed away from cancer so I don’t do so much of it now. The Tamron 100-400 would be my choice for it as it is much more portable and taking the crop factor into account it works well. My trouble used to be carrying too much gear. I can also highly recommend the Sony HX400 bridge camera with its 24-1200mm lens. I have been a passionate photographer for 50 years and my personal standards are very high so when I bought it as a take anywhere camera I didn’t think it would be as good as it is. It surprised me how sharp the lens is. I can fill the frame with the moon and it’s very sharp. You can also take it places where a large DSLR’s would not be allowed such as football at Wembley Stadium.

    Hey thanks for this amazing review. I went through the same thing you did. I was shooting crop sensor and upgraded full frame. I was using the canon 100-400 mk2 at air shows but when I can't get to the photo pit and am stuck further back I found 400mm was not enough reach. The sigma 600mm contemporary is a beautiful lens one of the best purchases I've made. It is idea for air shows and the small birds and wildlife, and at 600mm f/6.3 there is nice back ground blur as well. Nice prop blur shots by the way - hope you get to some air shows now in 2021/22.

    Great review, and decision.
    I have two of the older versions of that lens. On my Sigma SD14 camera, I have the 150-500 lens.
    On my Canon 6D Mk2 I have the 50-500.
    Love them both, but the 150 to 500, I believe, is a little sharper.
    Would love to get the 150-600, but I already have a little over $1000.00 USD in these two lenses, maybe close to 1100.
    Bought them on ebay, they are both like new, and I would not even THINK of taking less than 500. for each if I sold them.(which I won't).
    I do the same photos as you, and use a gimbal (Sometimes). Mainly, hand-held. Use a window sill for most of the birds.

    Great stuff, Brian! Having just added a Canon 100-400 to my kit bag, I had been thinking of getting the 70-200 f/4, and in fact had convinced my wife to get me one for Christmas (I'm getting her a new bathroom for Christmas, so the negotiations were pretty easy). However, since I have the 55-250, the 70-200, even though of admittedly much better quality than the 55-250, would have been redundant. The only lens remaining on my wish list therefore was a 500mm, which would have been a little ways down the road. However, I saw a bunch of reviews for the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary here, read a bunch of reviews of the lens, and posted a few questions on the Canon forum. In short, I've revised my Christmas request. I believe the 150-600 C will be a really nice lens on my 1DX3, and also on my 7D2, once I get the hang of calibrating it correctly.

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography

    I used this lens with a canon 7d mkii for a year and just sold it. Photographing wildlife it is a great lens with the 600mm reach at this price however it just wasn't super sharp fully extended at 600mm which drove me crazy and ultimately caused me to sell it. Just picked up a canon 100-400mm mkii to replace it and while it's 200mm shorter, the extra sharpness more than makes up for it in my opinion

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a shame you had a bad experience with the lens. I have not tried it with mine, so interested to see if you have calibrating it a go before you sold it. I guess you also get what you pay for and as I said in my video, I use it for aviation but that’s not my primary subject. So I can’t justify spending more. To be honest on a crop sensor camera I wouldn’t have bothered with this lens for aviation. Glad your pleased with the canon. I have the 75-300 which I carry for landscapes and love it!

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography

      derbagger22 . Yes indeed a big shame! But you know this isn’t a bad lens. I think you’re probably right that people are getting mixed results. But you have to be careful I helped a photographer out a few weeks ago with this lens who was getting bad results. Nothing wrong with the lens, just needed a little help with his technique. So some reviews are a little unfair, careful which ones you trust. I get good results but I’m still thinking about calibrating the lens, this would probably sort most peoples issues.

    • @derbagger22
      @derbagger22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BrianNorthmorePhotography yeah, that's what I've seen in reviews, too. Seems to be a question of technique, although quality control could be an issue. And my real pride and joy was a set of image I got of the ISS going over my house last june. I had to crop way in on the shots but I got images showing the outline of the body and panels of the ISS, It's amazing. I then create a GIF of the ISS moving front to back. I had seen shots others took of the ISS and never dreamed I could do this. I when out on my fitness walks the camera and lens always go with me, and yes its heavy after an hr on the shoulder, but its worth it. Its a MUST BUY for anyone that needs range.

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard, that’s a hard question to answer. Because without having both lenses to compare I would only be guessing. It also brings on other questions different lens / camera combinations work better than others. And also with 100mm more you may need to use a higher ISO to get the shutter speed you need. Higher ISO = more noise. Personally for motorsport ( and I have not shot a Lot of motorsport) I wouldn’t bother. I would also ask yourself is this something I need or want? What problem are you trying to solve? If you really need 100mm more maybe see if you can hire the lens somewhere.
      When I bought mine I did it with the view I could sell it on at the end of the year and claim back some of the money if it didn’t suit. If you do decide to buy please check out my affiliate links the small bit of revenue helps pay for the channel / web costs.

I have the Canon 7D mk2 with a trusty Canon 650D as backup. My main long lens is the Canon 100-400L mk2 so I wondered if it would be advantageous to add the Sigma 150-600 to my lens arsenal ? Ducati SupersportS First off thanks for commenting, and subscribing.
      You all ready have a fantastic set up. I’m not sure you would gain much by getting this lens unless you full frame. For aviation the equivalent of 900mm! focal length would be hard to control, and get sharp images.
      Now wildlife I guess is a different matter. If you find yourself sat for hours tripod mounted waiting for your subject maybe but bear in mind to get sharp images at that magnification you will need a much higher shutter speed, higher ISO and more noise.
      Sorry can’t help more. I have a 7D mki maybe I will give it a try.

      For what it's worth, I shoot mostly birds, and I find it useful to have both this lens and a Tamron 100-400 F4.5-6.3 VC. Although there is some overlap in zoom range, I use the Tamron for hand-held shots, since it weighs almost a kilogram less. I keep the Sigma 150-600C on a tripod, for when I really need the extra reach. Both are fine lenses, and I've wondered about selling one of them , but I think they fulfil different roles.

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, Lloyd I have not done any comparisons. But I would expect to find the same, a large number of lenses would work in this way. the only thing I would say is at 600mm compared to 500mm a slightly quicker shutter speed may help if what you were seeing was induced by camera shake.

    I have the same camera as you and the canon 100-400 mk 2. It’s a really great lens, but I often wish I had that bit more reach. Can’t afford it right now, so decision made, but something to think about in the future and your video is really helpful, especially the comparisons between contemporary and sport, weight being such a big factor. I do like bright days when I will use my 1.4 extender for the little birds.

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Deb From what I have read and seen if you have the 100-400 I wouldn’t bother. It seems that the 100-400 is a cracking lens so good in fact the results may equal my 600 when zoomed in. I would guess if you use the 1.4 and push the iso up a stop or two it would match the 600 sigma. This is also unproven of course.

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony Thanks For Your Question. It's not just about setting up the lens. It's also about the camera, what settings are you using on your camera? This is a big heavy lens so shutter speed needs to be as high as it can be ideally 1/800s or faster. With the 5 Dmkiv don't be afraid to push the ISO up to get that shutter speed. You should also try and shoot between F8 and F11 most lenses will perform better in this range. I Set my camera AF up with AF point switching at 0, and Accel at maximum, can't remember the rest right now. If you are shooting prop aircraft and need a slower shutter speed I have sharp pictures of helicopters at 1/50s using a monopod. Most of my shots are handheld. try this hand strap, it makes the camera far more stable in your hand: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07BJ6J7Q9/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B07BJ6J7Q9&linkCode=as2&tag=bnima-21&linkId=7946ef161206e016c08935942e6f9eaa

    Thanks for the in depth review. I bought this lens in January and used it on birds this spring and summer and it turned out some sharp photos. I did have some photos that were not sharp so I decided to do a calibration and at 100 ft it was out of focus at 250mm, 400mm and 600mm. So i was looking for some videos that would give me some idea why this is happening . I'm wondering if there is camera shake even though i used the timer on the camera to activate the shutter. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks again for the video.

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Camera shake is possible even with the self timer. It depends on the whole set up not just one element of it.
      You need a good sturdy triood, locked down. Make sure you mount it using the lens collar.
      Turn off image stabilisation, use mirror lock
      Up or live view. Be very precise with your focusing depth of field is tiny at 600mm then give it a go. Maybe start shooting at 1/600s or closest above this and work your way down. Keep aperture and focus the same so correct exposure with ISO and see what you get. Off course very high ISO may soften the image. Good luck let me know how you get on.

      Rey Gab yes it is. As you are using a cropped sensor the field of view is effectively 1.5 x the focal length of the lens (225 - 900) that’s huge. Depending what you want it for.

    How does the sharpness compare between the canon 300 and this lens?

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hardang Singh To be perfectly honest I have not compared them. I doubt very much if you would notice a massive difference. To do a fair comparison you would need to set sigma at 300mm and try it through the aperture range. If only needed 300mm I would use the canon anyway. It’s rare I use them both at the same time. There are other factors to consider like the weight of the lens I use the canon for landscape photography but I wouldn’t take the 600 on a hike and it use it for landscapes.
      I’m sorry I can’t help you more precisely with your answer. But it would be very wrong of me to draw a comparison on something I have not tested.

    Thanks for the review. I have had this lens for about 2 years, I have had some good results, but the weight kills me every time, not just when you are using it but also in my kit bag. Have been debating what to do next, gimbal head, monopod or trade-in for 100-400mm or similar. Your advice has really helped. Definitely going to try the monopod..! :)

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray Clarke I think it depends what you use the lens for. Monopod is a good cheap option as a starting point though, And not to heavy to carry. Hope it works out for you as it is a cracking lens and it would be. A shame if you couldn’t get the use out of it. Good luck.

    • @tonyjedioftheforest1364
      @tonyjedioftheforest1364 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Monopod works well. I have the sports version which is even heavier which I bought for my bird photography . I sold my Canon 100-400 but immediately regretted it. I have since bought the Tamron 100-400 which is much lighter and still an excellent lens for hand held shots.

      You know I don’t know! I think its an old Jessops one within a UniLoc ball head fitted on top bit of mashup, but to be honest, a monopod is a stick with a head on top! As long as it’s stuff enough it will do the job.

    Great review. Im not really interested in photographing planes, I was more interested in wildlife. Seeing just how cumbersome this large lens is in a real life demonstration is very eye opening. Thanks for showing that.
    Also the single point focus is a good tip. Im new to interchangeable lens cameras so doing a lot of research. Is there something you’d recommend if you were carrying the lens hand held? Ill be using a crop sensor mirrorless camera.
    Great bird photos! Forgot to say that.

    Great review. For some time I was thinking about this kind of lens within this focal range to try some wildlife photos, which I normally don't do. I didn't want to invest in a really expensive lens only to use sometimes and so I was thinking about this Sigma or the Tamron 150-600 G2. For the moment I've put this idea aside because I'm thinking about changing or buying another camera to carry around every day, I would use it more than a lens like this. We'll see :-)

    • @BrianNorthmorePhotography
      @BrianNorthmorePhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes indeed when cost and how much you would use it a super telephoto is an expensive investment, that’s what I went for this lens - no regrets with my purchase. But if you have other things to buy that may use more, then possibly you could consider hiring a lens for

      This is a really difficult question. And as I’m not a Sony user I hope some others chip in. I think maybe for wildlife the 600 would be better for you with the extra 200mm reach. I’m so then it will come down to the adaptor and if that has any impact on optical or focusing performance. Sorry not really an answer but hopefully others can help you more. Maybe it’s possible to hire each for a weekend and try them out?
