- As you can probably tell from this video, I'm a little too old to care about things like how you pick up your board. This is just my opinion though and I know a lot of (especially younger) skaters like to perpetuate the negative stereotypes of mall grabbing.
I'm curious about what your reasons for disliking mall grabs are. Do you have any valid arguments that aren't just "mall grabbing is gay" or "mall grabbing is for posers"?

I don't think I got my point across in this video clearly. I'm not saying that there aren't reasons not to mall grab. I get that if you have ground down trucks and you don't want metal splinters then you wouldn't grab your trucks. I'm trying to say that you should do whatever you want and let others do what they want. Skaters hating on skaters is lame.

I was holding a board for a friend while they were at the toilet. I got harassed by boys calling me a poser. I was wearing a knee length wrap dress with boots just below the knee. It was pretty clear I wasn't a skater ,they just wanted to be angry and my mall grab was an easy target

as a skater for 20 years, i am just now hearing mallgrabbing for the first time. I hold my deck however the hell i decide to.
same. even though i don't usually hold my board that way i was like holding it to take up less room on a subway platform and some teenager from across the way shouting yo your mall grabbing! and i had to look it up. i have been skating longer than that kid has been alive!
I’m approaching 10 years and honestly have never really skated with other people. I’ve never tried to get into park skating as they are filled with teenagers sitting around posing. Street skating gets you a ticket so it all had to be done at night/very quick.
Finally found a home on the hills surrounding lakes here in Wisconsin. They’re good to go almost year-round, hills drain off snow/ice, and the variety is insane as every road was paved separately.
Only ever had to worry about what someone thinks of me if they are a drunk soccer mom in her SUV thinking I want to play chicken at 1am.

There was a time in my life were there where a lot of people at my school who pretend to skate because they wanted to be cool. They lied about their abilities and sadly people believed them. The very thought of this pissed me and a lot of other skaters off because at the time skateboarding represented being unique and counter culture and trying to be trendy was the opposite of the skating mentality. Mall grabbing was one of the easy ways to spot these types of people. Skateboarding was and still is very cliquey just kind of like that for some reason. I think at the time a lot of people who chose to skate did so to be different and unique so posers sullied the idea of what skating meant to them. Hence the anger over something stupid.

For me, my dad skated in the 80s. I’m 20 and just started learning how to skate. Picking up my board by the nose is ripping up the skin on my thumbs, and I’m a professional artist so I can’t really have drawing being uncomfortable for me, so most of the time I do pick the board up by the trucks. I don’t want bloody thumbs! 🤣 Anyway dad said it was fine so I’ll just tell them my dad said it was cool. 😂
If the grip tape is hurting ur thumbs i dont think u have what it takes to be a skater. Concrete covered in glass hurts way worse

most skaters dont judge beginners. In my case most of them tried to help me if i did something wrong or gave me advice on how to do a trick easier. There are some who judge but i think they dont know the difference between beginners and posers or something. Just ignore them and go back to skating because its really fun :)

I carry my skateboard at school and I don’t wanna hit anyone with my skateboard while I walk in the crowded hallways. So I just use the mall grab. I’ve never been called a poser or anything but it’s still a fear of mine since I just recently started skating. I find it dumb that people can’t tell the difference between a poser and someone who’s learning. It just makes me scared to go to places like skateparks and stuff. I’m terrified of being judged.

One of the funniest videos about skating culture I've watched in a while. :D Thanks for making it. I'm over 50 and, like you, couldn't care less what people think about how I hold my board. I'm way past calling people poseurs and worrying about whether or not I look cool enough. I just want to skate, get better at my tricks, and minimize how much damage I do to myself. If it's not about the joy of being on my board and getting better, who cares?
I'm new to skating and expected this to be a video explaining that one of the ways I hold my board was loosening or warping or doing some other bad thing to my trucks. Good to know that I can carry on doing whatever the crap I want.
For all I care, calling out someone for mall grabbing makes you a bigger poser than the person doing it these days.

This was quite some time ago, but anyway: I'm past 40 and just got my first longboard cruiser this week (a 70 cm deck), and ignorant about any standards or jargon, would carry my board by the trucks, holding it by index and middle finger.
Grip tape is just really harsh on my fingers skin. Couldn't care less if this was frowned upon. No-one knows me anyway.
I've checked a couple of your videos until now. I like the relaxed attitude and sane advice that you promote. Excellent work!

I saw in a tiktok that the best way to hold the board is that way (mallgrab) and I've been doing that ever since and it's the most comfortable for me and it's really annoying that people hate on that because of something that happened forever ago
I never carried it like this when I skated but I used to carry it horizontally with the tape facing my leg and finally figured out that was the cause of the holes in my jeans. I only did it because with the tape facing out my legs would hit the trucks as I walked.

I have a longboard where there is NO deck space to grab in front of the truck, so yeah, I hold it by the side, or by the front trucks, that and it’s a 41” and it is relatively heavy

I'm from Brazil, and back in the day my friends and I didn't really care much about a "right way" to pick up a skateboard, but one thing is for sure: since we always worried about getting mugged (yeah, Brazil is kind of a violent place), when we saw ourselves in a possible "fight or flight" situation, we instantly grabbed the skateboard by the truck and stayed alert, since it's a better grip for using it as a blunt tool in case we needed to defend ourselves. Just recently I've found out about that _don't grab your skateboard by the truck_ "rule"...
I read a comment somewhere and it went something like this:
"I will hold the board with my teeth"

Mall grabbing is the most ergonomic way to hold the board. Always held it that way since the beginning. If you worry about the way people see you holding your board , or worry about people thinking you are a poser, then that makes you … guess what? … a poser … because you are concerned with appearance over skating for enjoyment
Being called a poser when you are learning to skate is every skaters "Red Badge of Courage" you must pass this initiation. Don't try to avoid it so much. It's likely gonna happen regardless of how hard you try not to let it.

People EVERYWHERE need to learn the difference between a beginner and a poser. There will be different opinions on this, but as an example,people say posers just hold their board and don't actually skate. Thats true. But when I went to the skatepark the first time,I was super intimidated by everyone that knew what they were doing so I just practiced on flat ground for a while, also to avoid accidents like snakes. Saw a lot of scooter kids snake skaters and almost all fell down
I spent the entirety of my teenage years skating hard in the city, met most of my oldest and best friends that way, and I have literally never heard this term until now.

When I started in high school I held my board like this a few times, but stopped none of my skating friends said a thing, jusy enjoyed skating with my best friend who taught me.

I carry my eboard like this. I wanted a deck with a handle cut out but that’s only on the long boards. At work, I also lock up the board that way, padlock around the trucks, and I can still see where the board is at all times. Merry Christmas everyone.
I'm a lawyer, and I'm 37. Sometimes I go to court to hand in documents and things like that, so I don't need to suit up. I take either my DB Longboards Mini Cruiser, or my 22" Penny, just because I like parking farther and not paying for a spot. I skateboard to Court. Inside, I mallgrab mostly to occupy the least space possible inside elevators and standing in line, because I already feel self conscious about the looks and comments, although I like the personal space that standing in line with one foot on the board gives me. But the mallgrab to me is a sort of social shrinking mechanism, where I should just be taking up fucking space and fuck whoever minds. But yea, it's more comfortable sometimes. Skate what you got, and grab it however you want to.

Ive always held it by the nose/tail with my thumb on the grip tape. It does remove the skin from your thumb eventually
I like how you tell the viewers that they don't need to be concerned with how someone else holds their board. It's common for people to warn others about harassers and they should just be themselves, but it isn't often enough someone tells the harassers there's no reason for their concern.

I hold my board this way, and when I went to the skatepark couple of people were laughing at me and pointing whenever I grabbed my board. But I'm actually one of the best skaters at that skatepark and after they saw me shred the park they didn't say anything lol. Later on I find this video and now know why that happened

I've recently picked up skateboarding as a 14 y/o girl and I find that mall grabbing is just easier for me... sorry if that throws off other skaters and it if somehow affects their skating lol

I've only been skateboarding for like 6 months. I live in a town where it's relatively hard to find skaters, so I've been told to mall grab, and I've been told not to mall grab.

I always thought it was called the mall grab because holding it that way would reduce the chance of hitting someone in a crowded area (like the mall). It was more of a consideration to others than a fashion statement for me. I've accidentally hit some kids in the head before on a train holding it the "cool" way so mall grabbing made more sense.
Jeremiah Castro yeah exactly, like you can only grab something so tightly with two fingers and in the mall you wanna avoid dropping your board. So it's a term for a move, just like how everything has a proffered term in skateboarding, some with derivative sounding meanings, fake / sex change. Some people understand the slang as applying differently or don't know the true meaning, or other people who do know the meaning and want to apply it or others still who have a certain expectation and desire to shame those who don't skate in the same fashion. I agree that basically a skater is someone who skates, but like anything else with humans, has to relate to fashion and lifestyle, and behavior in general.
It's called a mall grab because kids would hang out at the mall holding it like that instead of actually skating on the damn thing. The whole reason people get made fun of for it is because they're holding the board instead of skating on it. Just skate and don't worry about what others think.
How else were they supposed to get to the mall walk? I carry my board around the college campus all the time because the sheriffs employed as campus security are quick to catch you if you for a potential trespassing ticket, but without a car how do you think I get to class, or jack in the box from class?
i used to carry the board side ways and the grip tape would always rub a hole in my hoody. or just ride the board. only carry if the terrain was too ruff.
Mall grabbing is actually a good way to hold ur skateboard, because the grip tape can reallly rough up ur thumb when u walk and the skateboard sways back-n-forth! THANK YOU FOR UR TIME
one thing i should have mentioned in the video: don't get me wrong, I'm all for hating on posers, i just mean if you're a real skater you shouldn't worry about people making fun of the way you hold your board

Exactly. Also there's a difference between a newbie and a poser. I'm a newbie. Only got a board recently at 28 years old, but I practice a couple hours a day after work and I'm getting better. Someone called me a poser for being a newbie, but in the end. I can do basic tricks and get to work on my board. I don't think that makes me a poser.

As a longboarder the reasoning I always heard that skaters frown upon the mall grab is because it will cut up your hands and get metal shavings up in your palms if you’ve been grinding on rails and stuff like that for a while. IDK of thats true or not, but it always made sense to me. That’s supposedly why only the mallgoers would grab their boards that way.
I used to skate as a method of transportation back in the '80s & I'd skate all over town on my small green plastic board - kinda like the sort of boards Penny Boards do these days. I always used to mall grab, because I guess malls weren't even a thing in the UK in '87. Plastic boards don't have grip tape (or concave, or anything much) so that was never a bother. It was just the most convenient way to hold my board when I wasn't on it.
I'm curious about what your reasons for disliking mall grabs are. Do you have any valid arguments that aren't just "mall grabbing is gay" or "mall grabbing is for posers"?

VLSkate dude I don't mall grab because I Mall grabbed in a live stream yesterday, and I was called a poser and gay by everyone watching. It really hurt my feelings and I quit the stream. I don't want that to happen again.
TBH I mall grab when I go on walks with my wife just in case I see something I want to skate. Also I live in an urban area with lots of traffic and rough roads. I never thought people had debates over this because I don't care if you've skated a decade or a day or are "posing."
The only thing lamer than being a poser is accusing people of posing. Who cares its your life!
Edit: I don't think anyone who gets on a board can or should be considered a poser regardless of their skill level. We include, not divide. Peace.

I've been skating on and off for about 6 months and now properly getting into it and trying to skate at least once a week. I saw a video that was things not to do on a skateboard and mall grabbing was one of them and as I was always mall grabbing I stopped bc I thought there was a legitimite reasoning behind it and started to hold it at the board but it was tiring bc i had to hold it high bc my feet are big and im average hight so it drags behind me- thanks for letting me know that mall grabbing actually is fine! :)
Being as new as it gets to skateboarding I had to carry my new board with me and naturally gravitated to the mall grab. It felt more comfortable than the other grips and kept it from dragging. My board is a 30 inch cruiser and I stand at 5'5.
