Oh goodnes 🇨🇦 Christopher Pratt is a great Canadian painter. His recent passing is such a loss for Canada. He is my favourite contemporary artist. It’s amazing to learn that Sam Abel himself went to see Pratt in NF. There is a wonderful documentary about Pratt which you can easily find online. Often I tried to implement Pratt’s approach to composition in my personal photography.

When I saw your announcement that you'd have this #myfive series, I thought it'd be about how those images influenced or affected the photographer's photography career. And now I see I was wrong and naive even. Sam's story made me think who he really was and is now. It was more about his life, not only in terms of his photography career but also his life itself as an individual.
It was very interesting and somewhat inspiring for me as well.
To be really honest, many other episodes of yours made me think of different ways of seeing or approaching the photography itself because there were critiques involved. Then I learnt a lot and the way I see my photography itself has also changed in a good way.
But this episode is quite different, at least that's how I personally feel. I feel like I've just learnt how I can see and feel something beyond photography to be a "better" photographer. He was obviously talking about "his five images" but I've felt and learnt something not about photography. I don't know why. Maybe that's why I love photography :)
Thank you so much as always for sharing this brilliant episode Jeff 🥰

R&R, you're so kind. I've tried not to be too directive about what and how they should talk about their five images. I want them to have space to decide that for themselves. Sam ran with it, in his direction, with his story. I loved talking with him, and glad you got something from it too.

I was a high school student of Sam Abell and have been fascinated with him from his earliest teachings. I also was tutored by Sam Abell Sr. at Sylvania Northview H.S. Both men affected me profoundly. Thank both for your intellect and kindness.

David, Thanks for sharing! I am a midwestern boy from a family of educators. I feel a kinship with Sam, even though we have never interacted outside of this discussion. I can see how you would have been fascinated.

The Edward Steichen exhibition “Family of Man” can still be seen permanently in the small town Clervaux in Luxemburg. It is a must-see when you are in the region. All 530 pictures are displayed in the chateau. I bought the book there.
