- For award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma, music is the compass taking him on a new journey around the country as part of his "Our Common Nature" program. CBS News senior national correspondent Mark Strassman visited Great Smoky Mountains National Park with Ma to get a first look at his project that's transforming the great outdoors into concert venues to help people better connect with nature through music.

Imagine the bliss of walking through the Smokies and happening on the amazing sounds of Yo-Yo Ma.
I live nearby and missed it when he came through! Hopefully this is an annual thing.
Yo-Yo Ma, one of the greatest musicians and humanitarians of the 21st century. Instead of remaining in an ivory tower of accolades and prestige, he is taking his musical gifts to the people…truly inspiring.
When yo yo ma plays you can hear his soul singing and one can surely detect the combined beauty of nature and music❤
Fully respect this artist
Yo-Yo is not just an extraordinary musician; he's also an incredible human being.
Yo yo has inspired peaceful spirit and he is such a good role model for humanity....❤
Cello. The instrument that sounds like a human voice. A women’s voice. Yo-Yo Ma has been one of the stars of this genre! I love his continued joy in sharing his talent! It would be an honor to hear him in such an environment!
My gosh…this just moved me to tears…the beauty and sincerity of his words and actions. He is giving back to nature…and he speaks of unity and he is embodying it too, so beautiful, truly.
What a wonderful human being.
This was actually a wholesome news segment. Great job!
He is what is good in the world.
He has moved classic music and the Cello to extraordinary heights for many people. He is an extraordinarily brilliant teacher.
So incredible. As a professional cellist, I’ve grown up with Yo-Yo as a role model, not just as a musician, but as a human being. We are so lucky that the greatest artist of our generation is also one of the most humble and generous humans alive today. It’s an incredibly rare combination.
The man is a national treasure.
What a beautiful soul ~ 🌟
Wonderful man and great musician.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🌷🌷🌷Music and nature. The two best things in life😊
A magnificent and worthy project. An inspiring, must listen story.
Thank you.
You are my favorite musician! Your music makes me cry and makes my heart expands! 🥰❤️🙏😘
a man who could be sitting next to kings and emperors....best cellist ever. a Celibidache of the cello
Adorable like a heavenly angel
❤What a marvelous human.
PLEASE come visit us in the wilds of Ireland Yo-Yo. We’d be honoured 💚💚💚🌎🌲
A life well lived. Something we should all aspire to.
"This is the best truth I can find." Yo-Yo Ma
Here is an excerpt from Steps to Knowledge on truth. "Truth is changeless, but it expresses itself within the world of changing circumstances and changing understanding... You who live in a world of change and are undergoing change yourself must realize that your Source is unchangeable... Trust can only be truly established when it is based upon that which cannot be changed, assaulted or destroyed... Truth itself, which is Knowledge itself, is ever changeless, ever loving and ever genuine... As you realize your true life is changeless, then you will feel free to allow it to express itself in changing circumstances... Here you will find peace in the world, for the world is changing, but you are not." (Marshall Vian Summers, STK)
Thank you for this!
Thank mother nature for Ma!
Love this! What a legend.
Love Yo Yo Ma and his music ❤
YO YO-MA =a CELIBIDACHE of the cello and life
That tune in the Smokes made me cry.😢 An homage to dying Nature.
He’s inspiring and seems so humble.
How beautiful is this! It would be lovely to catch one of the pop-up concerts in person 😁
Ditto!
I've been following him and this is amazing. Get out to the smokies, and listen
It's one of my goals to go to one of his concerts.
Pure talent
I live on the Illinois River in Southern Oregon.
Yo-Yo your more than welcome here anytime.
I live completely immersed in nature.
You would love it here, you could play right at the rivers edge..
This is beautiful. Thank you!
How exquisite.
This is why music, and indeed all forms of art, is important. You couldn't get this experience with AI.
Yes 🙌🏼✨
How Wonderful
Magnificent, true spirituality!💖
Well, i love every second of this video
I LOVE YOYO MA!
I now understand his connection with Rhiannon. They are each born teachers who love humanity!
What a superb idea!!Va too has mountains in the Blue Ridge Mountains particularly!!!!
I had just this idea a few months ago! Bring my cello on hikes and record Bach. So thrilled to see Yo-Yo Ma doing this-what an incredible project.
Excellent initiative! ❤
Beautiful!
I love this!
Love this, thank you!
I sure hope he plays “Promentory” whilst in the Smokey’s. And I sure hope we get to hear and see a video of it!!!
CBS should have been with YoYo Ma when he played inside Mammoth Cave with the Louisville Orchestra a few months ago.
I should have myself! Wish I had known.
❤️❤️❤️
Wow
More music in nature here: th-cam.com/video/qCmFnruMHiE/w-d-xo.html
We played in a mini delta in the city limits of Bucharest. Nature + music = a sublime mood!
Jo jo his instrument, what’s missing. 3 wolf’s howling behind him.
❤
Cool!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
💝💝💝👏🏻
I could listen to Yo-yo Ma play all day long. Can anyone tell me the name of the piece he’s playing at about the 50 second mark?
the swan
Play Foggy Mountain Breakdown
please 🙏🏻
🌹🌹💕💕🙏🙏
To call him a rock star is an insult. He got where he is by genius talent and hard work practicing hours since he was four years old.
Imagine if a Karen goes “oh hey don’t know who you are but you’re disturbing the peace”
I’ve heard of Mo Ya-Ya.
Blues players have been doing this for decades.
🌹🌹🌹🌹♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️👌👌👌👌
Maybe a duet with the snaggle toothed banjo player from Deliverance
Playing a stringed instrument outdoors is so difficult because the temperature and humidity cause the instrument to go out of tune repeatedly
He certainly never misses a chance to be in front of a camera.
Jealous?
Just hope no bears around
Inside the national park...I can see it. Outside of it in Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg. Well maybe he can play cello with the hillbilly feud dinner shows or at one of the half a dozen Trump stores 😂
I always thought Yo-Yo Ma was an elderly black lady.
Why ruin nature.stay in concert hall

(Note to producers: was the original, Cherokee name created in the 1800’s? I DOUBT IT. Why did you call it the “Cherokee name from the 1800’s”? Why? That is insane. Do you believe the Cherokees came up with that name, especially for the white annihilators? You disgust me.)
