Oh schitt! This guy's a fricken wizard! I was wondering how these types of scales measure body fat and to my luck and fortune came across this guy, who took the scale apart and did some wizardry shenanigans! Grateful and lots of thanks for the time and effort you took into creating this video
I use to be a certified personal trainer. The gym i worked at had one of these. There is a hand tool and mathematical way to measure body fat. I compared the two. They were close but the scale could read up to %4 different. I look at it like a tool for progress but not to be taken precisely.
Thanks for your input! I guess 4% error is good enough for me at least. Would be really cool to compare to one of those full body water tanks. I assume that is the most accurate?
At the doctors, the most accurate was is to submerge yourself to measure your volume. Usually, with any consumer device, it might give you repeatable measurements but the absolute accuracy may be off.
the point of these scales arent to give you aa super accurate result. the point is to give you consistency in measurment. lets say the scale gives your body fat percentage at 25. but your actual body fat percentage is 22. now if you lose 3% of body fat the scale will still say youre now at 22.
Superb review. So pleased to discover that body fat is measured through sensor, rather than a standard weight/height calculation. Congratulations on your bmi result. ✌
To Mr. Beat Bush: Nice video. But, I don't understand how a scale/device can give one an accurate picture of all of these metrics just by one standing on a scale, no matter how technically savvy the scale is. I am surmising that a body scale would only give the person's weight. -------------------------------- A good experiment would be to put a heavy foreign object as a mannequin or a weighted or stuffed doll to see the percentile body fat, etc.
It’s not 100% accurate but, the way it works is the currents get sent up your body, and the current takes a different amount of time to pass through bones, muscle, water, and fat.
Opps. I noticed that. =/ It's actually 4.3%, the dot was there but I misread it. I measured a lobster bone weight a while ago and i think it was around 25% so I'm a pretty thick skinned crustacean if that were the case. I feel it'll be one foot to another otherwise it's just measuring the fat in your foot.
Really cool vid! I just bought a Huawei Smart Scale and I was a bit sceptic about the realness of the measurements, but now I got some proof of how it can work 🙂
@@Tala-rd8bw I still don't know how accurate the measurements are, but I quite like it, so yes I'd recommend it 🙂 (Only inconvinience is, that you have to open up the app and start the measurement to get it stored in your phone every single time.)
Hey. I did one of these by TANTA scale. As a female weighing myself on there I came out as 32%. This is obese but IRL I'm very slim and you can't pinch fat off me. I train in athletics so my muscles are very built. Then i changed the setting to say im a male with same height etc and it came out with 17.3%... any ideas?
Well, the formulas are simply different for deriving the body fat. Men have less of it, so the formula will infer less. Its because even if you have same conductivity on the soles of your feet as some man does, the formula must account for body fat distribution. And it will always be less precise for women, because there is higher variability. Women have body fat stored in their breasts which are of many different sizes and shapes and squishiness for example and scale doesn't ask for your size there because its impolite :D
It should be easy to test whether it is accurate or not. Put animal fat on it and the scale should say 100% fat or 99% with 1% or less being the container. Never tried it though because I don't have the scale, just an idea/thought.
@@BeatTheBush I read that how smart scale works is by sending very small electric current to the object on it, very small so its wont do any harm, then it will detect how fast it travels, faster through water and muscle, slower through bone or fat. Since it uses electric current, then maybe using anything that electric current can flow is ok such as metal bottle or pan. Just use a big pan or pot filled with water for testing since it's easier to prepare than using fat lol, it would be amazing though if it can really detect 99% water
Calculated from height and weight only i think and possibly area of feet. take bmi with a grain of salt. im about the same height as you and do a lot of heavy lifting at the gym, so a lot of my weight (80kg) is muscle mass not fat. also, smartphones have glass and are conductive through the surface, maybe it works like that.
The body fat scale actually does measure actual body fat by measure the resistance through your body. The surface is conductive. On a phone however, it does not do measurement via conductive electrodes but rather through capacitive measurements that does not require ohmic contacts. If you stick a ohm meter on the glass surface on a phone, it will read infinity which means it does not conduct at all.
I think this scale is a bit more elaborate. Still very approximate, but better than weight and height. It uses impedence measurements of your body probably.
OMAD diet my friend. Best decision I’ve ever made in my life. I cut the weight down incredibly fast and now I’m working out 5-6 days a week. Been doing it over a year now and I’ll never go back.

I don't have another scale to compare the other parameters such as bone or fat% with so I am not sure how accurate they are.
Even the weight fluctuate if you measure it one after another or you mean day to day? That might just be your real weight fluctuating if from day to day. The important thing is that they are precise and may not be super accurate and precise if that makes sense.
You mean if measuring immediately one time after other? If so, it should not fluctuate. I have a Nokia Body+ and my measurements are all the same if I try consequently.
One problem with body-fat scales is that they are often inaccurate. Many variables affect the results, including how hydrated you are, when you last ate and exercised, and even whether your feet are highly calloused or dirty, as well as the type and quality of the product itself. Studies have found that different body-fat scales produce widely varying readings and that these often differ from standard methods of fat measurement. (Devices that also have hand electrodes tend to fare somewhat better.) In a study published in Obesity Facts in 2008, scales with only foot electrodes underestimated body fat in people with lots of body fat and overestimated it in leaner people. Even the manuals say the devices may be less accurate for elderly people, highly trained athletes, children and people with osteoporosis, among others. Consumer Reports no longer tests body-fat scales because of their inaccuracies.
