  • Can we end HIV? Find out how medications like PrEP are helping to prevent the transmission and spread of HIV, and possibly leading to its eradication.
    --
The world is getting closer to achieving one of the most important public health goals of our time: eradicating HIV. And to do this, we won’t even have to cure the disease. We simply have to stop HIV from being transmitted until eventually it fizzles out. Philip A. Chan explores the preventive strategies helping us tackle HIV and the possibility of ending the epidemic.

The vast majority of these victims are those that cannot afford the treatment. HIV treatment today is extremely effective, provided you can afford them. Tragically, it's more of a problem for those uninsured in the States for instance and those in poor regions of the world.

20-30 billion dollars per year over ten years equals 200-300 billion dollars. If that sounds high, keep in mind that the U.S. spends more than twice that much on it’s military every year.

Treatment and prevention, like the author said, is a good strategy but unlikely to eradicate HIV completely as it stands. Too many social, economic, religious , access to health and self discrimination , mental health issues exist as barriers. It is also a bit of a lazy approach.
The focus needs to be on developing a cure. Just like for hepatitis C.

No, it eradicated something horrific, but if you can't see past that then.....I don't know, I don't know what to say to them anymore, I use to be a Pharmacist and I drove myself crazy (not literally, that's not why I'm not a Pharmacist anymore, I went back to University) trying to reason with them.

There's a youtuber from Indonesia who told his story about being infected an HIV. On one of his video he talked about ARV too, and even though this medicine is really important to those infected, it's really expensive in my country. From his story and what I read, I suppose there are some problems regarding the policy in my country about the price on ARV.

    That’s so good video
But in some places Prep is little expensive
Plus people r not even aware about any health care
HIV cases are getting increased lately in Egypt for example
I think a huge number of people don’t even have an idea about condoms and protection stuff
That’s so scary and needs more efforts to stop that

Syphilis still isn't eradicated, even though the treatment has been easy, quick, cheap, and readily available for nearly a century. We don't simply need new advances in HIV treatment for the eradication, we need a new mentality on every disease control, in general. The problem is much deeper than the video makes it seem.

Prep should be offered to everyone along with vaccines. It’s take all of us to get rid of diseases

It's a retrovirus because its information comes as RNA and it is turned into DNA (which is the opposite way of how the normal process works). That's what makes it retro, a lot of viruses incorporate their genetic material into their hosts because it is cheaper for them to use the cell's own replication machinery than to bring their own!

I'm curious. Won't the virus be immune if we keep taking the drugs mentioned in the video?

    • @FasFas160
      @FasFas160 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Nope. if you take your daily pills as scheduled then the virus will stay undetectable, be untransmitable and be unable to adapt to the drugs. The virus only has the opportunity to adapt if you forget to take your medicine for a period of time.

Besides, if ARV doesn't cure HIV, we need another method to know the virus is still in the body. Bcs, if the arv succeeded to make patient not-reactive, it means all method even lab test that exist now will result as "clear",

    If you think about it,
Nobody is trying to kill nobody,
    Everybody is trying to survive,
Like we survive by killing lots of cows and chickens and even plants.
Eventually viruses, bacterias everything is doing the same.
