I would say the closest I could think of is corned beef, but this is a boned and rolled pork shoulder. A bit of sweetness in the brine. Wife does not like it that much but I do and it was on sale. We all tend to do it the way Mom did it. She found it much too salty a lot of the time. I had to add more veg to the soup to bring the salt down even after soaking. I just bought one of those pots a few weeks ago... wasn't a fan at first but turns out I love it for soups and such in the house.. Lots easier to maintain.. Still prefer my old Dutch ovens but I feel better cooking tomato based soups in the porcelain coated one. Not that I ever had a problem with the other ones..

Hot soup also supplies thermal calories that the body would otherwise have to make up by burning fat and muscle, or by shivering. Soup does have a purpose in this world.
