The Forward Stroke - Robert has a different take on teaching the forward stroke that has had some really good results. Since Joey is taking a step back from the Thursday topic, which is a good thing because a client came up with a good idea to have our Ambassadors share tips and tricks. Different perspectives can lead to inspiration and Robert has picked up where Joey left off. Thanks to Robert and the Ambassador Team for being eager to share ideas and tips that we can all benefit from.

I like the simple approach. I’m going to try it out my next class.

I had an amazing experience with this technique today - one of my students was visually impaired. There was no way for me to really demonstrate the stroke even if I wanted to. With this method, they were able to dial in some rotation and feel when to release the blade.

Another excellent video from Robert! I can't think of a better ambassador for your company! I will watch and share this video many many times with my friends and in our kayaking groups. Thank you for this!

For some reason I'd missed this video during the summer. I have tried this technique a bit with my tours (based on a reply you gave me to an IG post) and I think it helps. This goes a whole lot more into the way, which is exactly what I like (Engineer and all that). I'm just preparing for a Level 1 Instructor course so this is super timely. So many thanks for putting this together and sharing it with us.
You mention leg drive, I'd be interested in your view of how much this can help during 'normal' paddling is a sea kayak. It seems to me that with a reasonably snug fit there's not a lot of hip rotation that's practical to expect (or even possible). But it could be that I'm just a lazy paddler ;).

Hi Andrew! The drive in a snug fitting touring kayak is more of a foundation or anchor to the stroke. By putting pressure on the foot rest, you are providing a more solid foundation for the torso to rotate off of. This is a really important concept for those times when you are fighting current or the wind. It also engages the core for more efficient power. I follow the mantra of using big muscles over small muscles. The smaller ones use more energy and tire faster than the big muscles.

@@TurningPointBoatworks Thanks for your reply. Just reading this now after being basically off-the-grid while on the course. What you say is very helpful and makes a lot of sense. I think you're right about the importance of setting you up for powerful torso rotation. Completely agree on using the core, it's another reason I do planks every day.
On an unrelated note, Shannon was also on the course, so we chatted about you and your great boats.
