I was at the show when the Parabola problem occurred (first clip). It was bizarre to watch. But the band didn't miss a beat, and the crowd rose to the occasion and picked up the tune from where Maynard threw the mic and finished the lyrics to the rest of the song.
He walked off-stage completely. Came back as soon as the song was over. Didn't acknowledge the mistake, or that the crowd ran with it (we went nuts at the end of Parabola, btw. It was wild). He just continued with the show as if nothing happened.

Everything comes crashing down until you can salvage it on the next bar, and that's only if you can. It's a pretty big reminder that you're only human and shit happens.
I am a guitar player too and I'm new to playing live and I need some advice. What size solid state amp would you recommend for playing in a small venue
SomeGuyNamedJohnny how big of venues are you talking? and is there pa that the amp will be miced through? and what kind of music do you play? as a guitarist in a hardcore band, I play a lot of diy house shows, as well as small venues. if your playing a place without pa and have to rely solely on the amps output, you might think about getting something a little louder, to make sure you can be heard. but it's also good to just have a higher wattage amp for the headroom. if you have a 100 watt amp, you might only turn up halfway, but if you needed to, you could always turn up more
+TurTles I'm only talking small places at the moment, I realize I'm not going to need a massive 120 watt amp to lug around only to turn up to about 2. I play with a nice high crunch/ fairly low overdrive. I mostly want to be prepared for the venue NOT being able to mic me up. And before you say it, I already know to boost my mids a little :)

I highly doubt it's possible, maybe if Tool were a pop band, but the level of skill and precision it takes to play the majority of their songs would make it a miracle if they can still play at the age they will be.
Seriously one of the most complex songs I’ve ever heard. Heard them play it live in Australia a couple years ago and I couldn’t catch a mistake. As a guitarist, was like holy fuck they did it haha.

It's so easy for shit to go wrong on stage. lol It feels like time stops. I guess that's the thrill of the gamble. For Maynard, as you get older, your voice deepens. Some of those notes were pushed beyond range in the studio over and over again in the first place anyways. Live is a different story always. Brutal lol This band has an eternal free pass though. Look what they've done. Nice compilation.
With every Fuck up on stage, you get monumental growth as a band, you learn how to recover which is key. I love playing live it's such a fucking thrill.
More like Danny screwed up a tiny bit all the way back at 0:53 (misplaced the snare), got lost and couldn't recover by the time the tempo shift happened.. Maynard saved his bacon lol. Even Adam started looking at him before the part that obvious to the crowd. Gotta love the way how he just powers on through, and how Maynard noticed it and bailed him out by jumping ahead!
Whenever I would watch Tool videos I would always think to myself "How does Maynard's voice not crack when he does that?". But I guess sometimes it actually does and it's pretty rare and funny.
I'm a really cool guitarist and musician and here's what you need to know: mistakes on stage happen; your band can get totally out of synch with you but it's about reining that beast back in. Even awesome professionals like me make mistakes but you learn to recover and turn it into something greater than what it was. That's what separates the amateurs from the real professional cool musicians like me.
Personally I love the imperfections at a concert. Living breathing human beings sharing their art and each imperfection is unique to that moment. Just my thoughts ♡
At 4:46, what does he say? "Wrong song stuck in my head" ? LOL They use such jacked up time signatures-I cant even imagine how hard it would be sometimes to be able to zero in on your cue, even if you did help write the damn song! lol I just was able to see them live for the first time in Nashville and I was blown away at how incredibly tight they are. They are absolutely one solid unit on stage.
Saw them in 2009 in DFW and I remember during the Vicarious build up 2 of them lost feeds into the mix. The entire show came to screeching abrupt halt. They were all 4 looking at each other like wtf. Having seen them numerous times it was memorable as hell because it's so rare. Funniest part was during the awkward silence there was one little red laser going back and forth as the crowd stared in silence. Danny just busted back into playing his part......within 10-15 secs the guitar feed kicked back in, then the bass feed and they took off again.
its truly amazing that most of their songs can even be played live. how the hell do you remember every note and beat when your average song length is like 8 minutes?
There’s nothing worse than playing a song you wrote the fucking lyrics for but go completely blank while live. You genuinely just forget the entire song in an instant and that panic makes it worse It happens. It is such a strange experience but Jesus do they wrangle it together well for such complex music.
Dude..thinking about Maynard fucking up is funny enough, but to hear that wailing voice crackling number he did at 3:03 LOL you can't help but laugh at the dude. I bet it PISSES him off bad when that kind of shit happens.
Even their fails are cooler then anyone's best . They're human just like us . That shows you that they're genuine. In my book tool ( perfect circle) is and always will be the best band of all time. Their music is infinite .
As a singer myself I can tell you that this style of music is not easy to sing , it's almost impossible and I have no idea how Maynard can do it as well as he does! I think I can sing the blues like it's no one's business but I only wish I could sing like Maynard

For Maynard, as you get older, your voice deepens. Some of those notes were pushed beyond range in the studio over and over again in the first place anyways. Live is a different story always.
Brutal lol
This band has an eternal free pass though. Look what they've done.
Nice compilation.
Definitely an eternal free pass.
With every Fuck up on stage, you get monumental growth as a band, you learn how to recover which is key. I love playing live it's such a fucking thrill.
When Maynard's demon doesn't show up and leaves him hangin on his own
1:20 Danny and Maynard save the day!
That's what separates the amateurs from the real professional cool musicians like me.
so egotistical.. and what band are you in?
joker9494949494 My band's too cool and underground to mention our name on a mainstream forum like this.
465marko good keep that sorry shit from my ears :)
joker9494949494 Only a select, chosen group of people get to hear our music....so, it's a bit arrogant of you to think you're a part of that.
Lol @ your sour grapes though..
Take a shot every time Maynard missed his entrance to Third Eye
Best tool comp I've seen. Thx for sharing. Proves how genuine they really are. No pretending. No autotune. Just raw talent. #billboardkings
Personally I love the imperfections at a concert. Living breathing human beings sharing their art and each imperfection is unique to that moment. Just my thoughts ♡
I agree with you
At 4:46, what does he say? "Wrong song stuck in my head" ? LOL
They use such jacked up time signatures-I cant even imagine how hard it would be sometimes to be able to zero in on your cue, even if you did help write the damn song! lol I just was able to see them live for the first time in Nashville and I was blown away at how incredibly tight they are. They are absolutely one solid unit on stage.
He Says "Child's Rhyme Stuck In My Head"
Hernandez8895 Thanks!
what song was that
Third Eye
Don't think there are any odd time signatures in third eye
Saw them in 2009 in DFW and I remember during the Vicarious build up 2 of them lost feeds into the mix. The entire show came to screeching abrupt halt. They were all 4 looking at each other like wtf. Having seen them numerous times it was memorable as hell because it's so rare. Funniest part was during the awkward silence there was one little red laser going back and forth as the crowd stared in silence. Danny just busted back into playing his part......within 10-15 secs the guitar feed kicked back in, then the bass feed and they took off again.
The tool logo in which the letters are connected always looked like "fool" to me.
Maybe it's done on purpose...
its truly amazing that most of their songs can even be played live. how the hell do you remember every note and beat when your average song length is like 8 minutes?
only maynard and adam are human. danny and justin are apparently immaculate.
Nah, JC fucked up Third Eye like thrice in this video
@ 2:57.... oh man, this is great! hahaha. He owned it. Gotta love the dude for 'going for it'.
Aww poor Maynard
I love how when Maynard fucked up Hooker he still managed to be in time with the second half of the chorus somehow
joe namredla its because of danny
Jambi at around the eight minute mark had me cringing so hard.
But fuck me that song's difficult.
honestly i like how they did, sounds more relaxing
0:09 Me when I try to sing any T00L song lol
Same :(
There’s nothing worse than playing a song you wrote the fucking lyrics for but go completely blank while live. You genuinely just forget the entire song in an instant and that panic makes it worse
It happens. It is such a strange experience but Jesus do they wrangle it together well for such complex music.
Also Maynard owes the entire band a beer after 9:12 recovery hahahah
His voice didn't crack. His soul left his body for a couple moments there, that's all.
2:58 - Maynard attempting his Dolores O’Riordan impression
The way they recovered at 9:20ish was beautiful
7:15 gotta say that when I'll be 50 lmao
As a singer myself I can tell you that this style of music is not easy to sing , it's almost impossible and I have no idea how Maynard can do it as well as he does! I think I can sing the blues like it's no one's business but I only wish I could sing like Maynard
Jake I'm ace high knock
"Nothing more embarrassing than forgetting your own lyrics, but hey. FUCK you I'm fifty!" That's hilarious XD
