Twins fan here who ran into Doug at bars on a few occasions (and followed his career, obvs). I once sat at a peanut bar and heard Dougie Baseball talk to the bartender he just met for an hour and a half exclusively about fishing. He was 100% unpretentious and real. On that occasion he was at the bar with five other Twins players and Dougie spent time without any entourage or other players chatting up any and every fan who approached him. On the field, he was always baseball first (hence the nickname), always hustling, rubbing sand on things, pine tar on his helmet, etc., etc.
But in this interview he sounds like the small town dude -- a salt-of-the-earth Good Dude -- whose girlfriend moves to the Big City and comes back home to visit some years later with a new hairdo and accent, likes different music and acts totally differently. A-Rod swims in a bigger pond now. He has many oars in the water to tend. Doug always stayed who he was, regardless of what he accomplished or where he went. A-Rod morphed into media and business mogul-type guy. I can see why Doug would be dismayed by that, but there is nothing inherently wrong with it.
Well put. When I first heard about this I thought this guy who be some big huge blowhard who wanted to spew his bitterness but he seems like a cool ass dude who's got a good enough heart. But it's just like holy shit he just needs to get over himself with this peaked in high school mentality and move on with his life and put better use to himself

Dude it was high school. When one gets older that is a very very distant memory. You were barely more than kids. No one is friends with everyone they went to high school with. You might have two or three you might contact once in a blue moon on social media. Many people don't have any connections from high school. It was a distant period of your life and you move on. You're talking about over 30 years ago and getting closer to 40 years or more. Not long ago that was considered nearly a lifetime. Move on and get over it and stop being a jerk. Life's too short for that pettiness.

Doug Mientkiewicz really needs to grow up. AROD was a professional athlete. There are many HOF and marginal pro athletes who literally live and breathe their profession while they are playing. It consumes their existence. Many guys like Jeter, and Brett waited after their playing days to have a family. Heck, Brett had a girlfriend have an abortion so he could not be burdened with children. Many had moral failings like Chipper Jones and have a kid with a mistress. These are not evil men. They're just humans with failings like the rest of us. AROD tried to have a traditional family. It didn't work out and he moved on. He like a myriad of other pro athletes used PEDs. He will pay a price for that. All this hollier than thou posturing by Mientkiewicz is silly. He's just a jealous, petty man. AROD never talks bad about people or gets in shows to claim how cool he is. Leave the guy alone and stop hating.
AROD made his mistakes but he was also one the better players for many years. Maybe not the best and his legacy tarnished by PEDs. That said who the fuck is Doug Mientkiewicz? Actually I remember him well abs he wasn't worth a shit and played for several different teams in only 10 years. Wasn't an All Star got one WS ring by getting traded to Boston at trade deadline and didn't do shit after that. AROD was a star for 20 years everywhere he played. Mientkiewicz had 66 Homer total versus AROD 600 something home runs

but every player in Major League baseball new players was using PDS. Until the media brought it up, they could don't it, and every player made money. During those years, they contracts went up because of the Pee Dee users, mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, MPD users made a ratings go up and everybody got paid for it
@718empire the 2003 survey testing found 5 to 7 percent positive. This was without consequences and was supposed to be anonymous (sorry, Big Papi). So it's likely our closest number. It didn't pick up HGH, which was less popular at the time. But if we go to 10 to 15 percent, that's still a lot of guys who never or just weren't taking PEDs competing against guys who did.

I'm not outraged about the cheating. I'm outraged that steroids are super bad for you and a lot of the people who ended up doing them probably wouldn't have if they didn't feel the need to keep up with people who did. Even Bonds told friends that he only did them after he saw what happened in 1998 and it pissed him off because he was the best player in baseball and he wasn't getting the same respect that the guys juicing were getting. I mean, he wasn't wrong. He was a hall of famer before he did PEDs and everyone hated him.
