    Tekst/Lyrics:
Höyrer Harald Sigurdsson, dei draumtegn frå
brodir Olav Matkhugen må du dölje no, ille det
deg gange, Höyr no ikkje på Toste Jarl, der han
eggjar til englands å fare, Tord han hadde ein underleg draum,
    og ilt tyda draumine mange.
På våren i ett tusen sekstiseks ei ferd vart förebudde,
Maktglad konge i noreg rådde, og leidang baud
ive landet. Eit hundre og fem og nitti skip,
til Orknöy-jarlen dei sigla vest, og Torfinn Jarl sine
söner lest eit hundre fleire langskip.
Kom dei fram til Jordvik by då fyste slaget
gnydde. Jarlen Muru-Kåre fall og Valtjov Jarl han
flydde.
kunne. Men for å vinna tid om senn, så bad dei
Tjodolv sterke enn at han må stansa kongens menn
    der ute på Stanford brua
Og lenge heldt han Tjodolv stand mot
Angelsaksarkongen, men undantil med spjot dei stakk,
så var dei over komne. Då andre slaget i ofse rann,
store vart men nordmenn måtte flya. Så gjekk det til at
Vilhjalms menn fra Frankariket makti vann og
norrönalltingretten fall ut der ved Stanford brua.

It's an older type of Norwegian. Young Norwegians today have a little trouble understanding it, although I guess it's easier for the people on the west coast. The language style is comparable to 14th century Middle-English. It's far from Old Norse, though.

I listen to this regularly.. it's beautiful remembering how we still walk the fields, heard our sheep and cattle in the same cultural landscape as the Norse ancestors prepared for us, here in Scandinavia. I don't worship the old god's, but one cannot doubt that we still feel the ancestral presents here in Norway. We see the same mountains and sail the same fjords. They knew we would talk of them for thousands of years, and boy where they right. We are thankful to the old ones, Skål! From Norway

Kevin Dura In an other way because of this battle the saxon'king was surprised by the norman's invasion. Some of his troops were dead, he had not lot of time to go backward to face this new invasion. Maybe it's key to understand the victory of Hastings by Guillaume the conquerer.
After all this duc from normandy came from viking ancestors ;)

English history textbooks have never mentioned that Harald Hardråde was far more influential in his time than Harold Godwinsson. Harald Hardråde had made a name for himself as a high-ranking Byzantine military commander who had campaigned widely in the Mediterranean and also become phenomenally rich, while Harold was a member of a difficult, fractious family of English nobles with little influence outside of England, until the time of his unsuccessful mission to Flanders (1064) which led to his capture in Ponthieu and captivity in Normandy.

    • @saladcaesar7716
      @saladcaesar7716 4 ปีที่แล้ว

irateofwatford was that a reference to the Norse body guard of the Byzantine emperor?

    • @mrjay4881
      @mrjay4881 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Godwinsson may have been less influential that Hardråde, but not by much. His father Godwin Earl of Wessex accompanied Cnut on an expedition to Denmark between 1019 and 1023, where he distinguished himself. Godwin's support for Cnut was the reason Cnut was able to keep power in England. before Godwin's death he had influence all across the North Sea Empire.
His mother Gytha Thorkelsdóttir was the daughter of Danish chieftain Thorgil Sprakling (also called Thorkel). Her brother Ulf was married to Estrid Svendsdatter, the daughter of King Sweyn Forkbeard and sister of King Cnut the Great of England and Denmark.
Harold Godwinson and his brother (Sweyn Godwinson, Earl of Herefordshire, Tostig Godwinson Earl of Northumbria, Gyrth Godwinson Earl of East Anglia, Leofwine Godwinson Earl of Kent) were one of the most influential family's of the day.

One thing that really struck me about this beautiful song is the tune it is sung to. It's almost idetical to a tune known in my Homeland of Newfoundland as 'Lukey's Boat'. Interesting how the norse influenced our culture despite thousands of years since the abandonment of their settlement here.

one such chainmail was found near haitabu - it was mentioned in a documentation but i cant recall which one - they made one like the one found and tested it in a military lab together with 2 other chainmailtypes of that time (but different origin - one used by the normans and one by the english) the vikingmail was the best by far - they had used one flat ring and one round ring in the mail while the others consisted of either only flat or only round rings. all had the same "system" of 4 in 1

That is the "Blood of the Vikings" documentary found here on TH-cam. They were testing actually a replica of the only intact set of Viking Age mail, found at Gjermundbu, Norway. This combination of flat solid rings and round riveted rings was used since Roman times and is not exclusive to the Norse The only other common type is all-riveted.. If you review the documentary again, you will see that they don't associate the other mail types with Normans or English.

The tribe of the Angles came from southern Denmark. They ended up settling the East and northern parts of England. The Saxons settled in the southern half of England and came from further south in Germany. Not to mention the Danelaw settlements in Yorkshire. Northern English people aren't far off from Norse folk.

If Heimskringla is to be taken at face value, much of the Norse force was without their mail shirts since they had to run a great distance from their ships to reinforce Stamford bridge. This is the legendary explanation for their eventual defeat there. There is nothing to suggest that the Vikings had better armor or weapons than anyone else at the time. If anything, soldiers of large empires like the Franks or Byzantines were the best equipped in Europe.

Amazing song, Harald Hårdråde is my ancestor on my grandmothers side (She is from Bohuslän) She is from the Dano-Norwegian noble house of Måneskiöld (Moonshield) which has connections to both Harald Hårfager and Hårdråde (along with other scandinavian kings/noblemen like Saint Eric and Birger Jarl of Sweden). Länge leve Harald Hårdråde! :D

Too bad the Norwegians didn't win back then. The world would be different today.

My suspicion is that the really big winner would have been France. Think about it, with no big English strongholds in Normandy, which is practically just outside Paris, the French could've freely focused on their east and south. And that would probably leave them with greater resources to focus on the Spanish Reconquista as well.
I simply don't see the Norwegians being able to control England. The age of longships was over, and the age of heavy, mounted knights had irreversibly begun. Harald Sigurdsson's realm would be disunited at best, if not lost within a generation, and the old Saxon nobility would be much more powerful than under William.

Smygskytt #1 Thanks for the interesting reply. The long boats made it to North America. They are interesting to this day.
Harald and his horny buddies would have just inter-married with the Anglo-Saxon "nobility".
Instead of a Norman French basis, English would have had Norse.
What was wrong with the Anglo-saxons? The only thing that they did wrong was lose to William the truly twisted puppy. I think they were really interesting.

Smygskytt, what the fuck are you talking about. Norwegians came with approximately the same force as Normans did. Why it would be unable to control England for them? William too didn't had horses, they could get everything in England

Legende. In Romanian we have the same word, legende, which is our plural for legend. What is interesting, in Romania we don't have songs for specific battles moments and also we don't have folk/popular songs in memoriam of our heroes. Some mirrors are good.

What set Viking Chain-mail (Brynje) construction (as is supported by some surviving archeological finds) apart from Other peoples and times chain-mail construction: is the fusion/welding of each link. This is by far the most robust of links. Do some real research fellas, without approaching with preconceived agendas.
