Fascinating! I was your colleague at Charterhouse. I remember you as a fine hockey player. My interest, thanks to my Admiral father being involved with the World Council of Churches, led to a career in the Bible (not prompted by the vague Bible study at Charterhouse!). My conviction, as with your earlier writings, is that the historical Jesus was early on lost to the Church claiming his name, but discarding his unitarian creed of Mk 12:29-- and his Gospel of the future Kingdom. I dont think we will ever really appreciate how Don returned us to the revolutionary wandering philosopher of Nazareth who overturned the tables of the law, and the temple, until the churches completely empty, and the hypocrites in dog collars are swept away by the sea of faith he whipped into a storm. Don Cupitt's mother was born in January 1913, his father in April 1911. They married in 1933, when she was 20. Don was born in May 1934. Why does he say (1:39) that she was 19 when she got married and 20 when he was born (1:41)? How does it come about that someone with Cupitt's prodigious memory and evident love of dates believed his mother was a year younger than she actually was?
