Try microfiber cloth to stain the wood. Less mess and spreading it around is a lot easier.

It’s a very great idea and it looks nice. But after all that work there’s a big gap by the inches for water to get in or any rodent

Maybe for some. I’m still using it now from when I first posted this and it’s been fine. No rodents in there so far and no water either. I have it on the wall of my porch that happens to be under a roofed section so water is never an issue.
