As a social worker it concerns me that so many are immediately defending the parents. They had pictures of child with a hand print and bruised eye and a father who admitted to hitting her. The child is going to act out but just like the case worker said, “the child will act like a child but he is the parent and the adult”. He needs to act like an adult and control himself. He yelled over everyone the entire time which indicated to me that that is how he runs his household, with power and violence. I do not think it is their first run in with CPS or law enforcement. It is also telling that mom divorced dad. Why divorce him if it is all the girl’s fault and everything else in the relationship is fine? Seems more like mom got into a relationship with an abusive man and put daughter into an abusive house where she was targeted.
Divorce happens all the time for a lot of reasons including trying events such as this one that puts undue stress on families and it's in a parent's nature (though not in there best interest ) to be very protective when an outside entity tries to tear their children away from them . For you this demonstrated power and violence but it can also demonstrate deep caring and anguish . I wonder if monitoring cameras 24/7 wouldn't have been a good preventative tool with volatile teenagers or parents to see definitively what actually went down.
"Right now the children belong to me and I will decide when the children go home".. That judge made that decision after a few minutes with very limited information. Unbelievable.
But when you've presided over cases like this day after day, it doesn't take very long. And you need to do what's best for the kids. If you don't know for sure that the kids are going to be safe, you can't send them back.
I think Amber was a rebellious teen and didn't want to follow rules. That happens with teens sometimes. I did also see big favoritism with the 2 boys though as well and, that might have been part of her rebellion or what the step dad considered rebellion. If it was all about the boys, it would make sense why she started acting up. It's hard to know the mothers thoughts because she didn't say anything until towards the end. It was all him talking! Neither ever said anything positive about her. The father only wanted the boys back and didn't seem to care what happened to the daughter. Another thing I noticed is that when they had their first visit and he asked the boys if they wanted to come home, they said no. The youngest didn't even go over to give him a hug good bye. They were happy to leave the parents and go back with the social worker after their visit. I think that also says a lot, that maybe not all was really well in their home life. I grew up in a home with a step dad and he and my mom had a child together. That child was their pride and joy while my full brother and I were treated like garbage a lot of the time. There was lots of physical punishments towards my brother and I but none with their child. We grew up to be rule breaking teens and my mom kicked me out at 17. I never lived with them again. So, I know what it's like growing up in that type of home. People want to blame it all on Amber acting up being a spoiled teen but I think there was more to it than that.
I dont get it. The mum said she will always choose her children over a man but she didn't. Could tell within five minutes of watching the family dynamics the mum had no voice. Off course a young teenager is going to butt heads with an overpowering male whos demanding control. Even his own son didnt want to go home. More interested in staying with his friend he had made. That says it all. Mothers love and guidance is always needed at that young age especially her daughter
State CPS has way too much power. This social worker already had her mind made up about the situation before she ever got there. This woman walked in a just destroyed a family before truly knowing any facts . It's terrifying for parents. Don't get me wrong, abuse needs to be dealt with but it's rare that CPS ever helps children. The ones who truly need it get ignored and the power plays by CPS is disgusting. Then they place children in homes of foster people who abuse them terribly. So very sad.
Couldn't agree more with you! I'm amazed that the social worker didn't even interview the kids BEFORE making a decision!! She teed her supervisor to back up her suggestion to remove the other children... It was all in the pipeline BEFORE Kerry could get representation or defend himself!! How many kids have been even more abused by foster parents? And, how LITTLE supervision foster parents seem to receive... which enables abuse?? The whole system appears to be 'back to front' - take kids away from secrurity and familiarity of parents to hand them over to strangers seems to cause more trauma and damage to kids, AND parents. Stinks!!
CPS has way too much power and they are not protecting the kids that need to be protected and then they take kids that they don’t need to. Teenagers are notorious for being brats! That lady didn’t even check out the situation of the boys with their parents. They just arbitrarily took them because of the teenagers say so 😮 I would like to hear about what the hospital had to say about her face. I have absolutely no faith in the state
Absolutely they can be. Intentionally and unintentionally. They’re consequence ignorant. There are so many children who don’t even get an eye bat by CPS when they’re viewed with bruises and then it’s cases like these where children intentionally cause issues to get what they want.
Absolutely WRONG!! the welfare worker is WRONG handled it wrong the little kids didn't deserve the upset and should have been BETTER protected from the situation to start The state worker was in the wrong 100 percent especially being the ALLEGED trained for child welfare work pathetic
@@jeffdoyle1227 I struggle with addiction to smoking, but I absolutely agree. I'm a social worker myself and was curious to see how this would play out. What I'm unsure of is the boys, seeing that apparently they did not really take the brunt of things like Amber did. Either way, the outcome was tragic.

So DHS takes all the kids as the aftermath of one incident, with no actual proof, after the parents reported that there was a problem, but there are countless cases where children aren't removed despite actual physical proof of abuse and those children end up never growing up... Make it make sense. I understand what dhs is trying to do, but they've failed time and again.
It's very clear to me whos at fault here. It's the parents. The step father is clearly abusive and the mother is standing by and allowing it to happen. Absolute trash both of them
First, i don't agree with physically abusing a child but children/teens aren't perfect little angels. They are capable of lying and manipulation to get what they want. CPS needs a major overhaul and parents need resources to help with difficult children. Many parents are afraid to discipline children at all which makes children think they don't have to take responsibility for their actions and rules don't apply to them. I've seen this attitude in the schools. Then they grow up and think laws don't apply to them.
Nearly all of the time, a “difficult” child is the result of inconsistent parenting and boundaries. The parents wouldn’t give a damn about the resources given.
