    I get a sinking feeling hearing the fate of all these successful enterprises taken over by faceless corporates. Why do they buy a business only to abandon its formula, lose money and close it down.

      They don’t give a damn. It’s all about Wall Street morning profit reports. And if some Main Street institution isn’t making them millionaires, they execute it. Doesn’t matter how many generations used or enjoyed it. Read and learn.

      They probably do it on purpose... raid the cash, stiff creditors and walk away. It’s a strategic plan . I worked for a large corporate grocery chain and saw it up close . They wanted it to fail . Bought it cheap,raided the assets ,filed bankruptcy and on to the next rip off

    I grew up in San Diego, and Farrell’s was one of the best things about childhood. The candy shop was like being in Willy Wonka’s waiting room.
    Of course new owners ruined it. Of course they did. They bought a wonderful, well-loved company, and decided to change everything we loved about it.

    Ahh Ferrell's, my first job. Hired on at $1.10/hour. Guys always started out as dishwashers and worked your way up to waiter where the big tips awaited. I only made it to fountain jerk. Girls were just hired on as waitresses and cashiers.
    I worked at the Lloyd Center branch in Portland which is the first pictured building in the clip, and recognize Steve McKenna, my manager, holding the Gibson Girl Sundae over the piano a few photos in. Good memories there of long nights scooping ice cream till my arm ached, making Zoo's, tons of Clown sundaes, Tin Roofs, Apple Pandowdies, Banana Splits and Pig Troughs. And 2 cent soda water!
    As many other people here have noted, Ferrell's took a huge turn for the worse when it was sold to Marriott's. Almost overnight it went from such a fun place to work, to penny pinching, micro managed EVERYTHING. They killed the enthusiasm of us employees completely. We couldn't even walk fast with Zoo's anymore. You could tell it was the beginning of the end. Bob Ferrell's presence on the company was pretty limited.
    But still my good times far out weigh the bad, good memories, good friends, and I still have my Styrofoam "straw" hat and the red, white and blue garters we wore around our upper arms.😁

On my last day, only a few hours before my plane left for home, my host family took me to Farrell´s, where we shared a "Mount Rainier", a humongous bowl of ice cream latge enough to make a football team sick Needless to say I was not really in the mood for this, as I didn´t want to go home. And those jawbreakers, we'd suck on those things for a while and then put them in plastic bags, then keep taking them out ... they'd last seemingly forever (or at least several weeks). That whole experience was back at a time when neighborhood kids all hung out together, and simple birthday outings to places like Farrel's were common. Times change, I guess, but it was fun while it lasted.

      There was also a Farrell's at the Stratford Square Mall in Bloomingdale, but the location was lousy (top floor in a corner), so if you blinked you missed it, which is a big reason it went under (along with the fact that American culture started to harden and coarsen in the 90's). I remember being shown once how Zoos were made. They had a big walk-in freezer and on shelves in there they had Zoo bowls lined up in a frosty line. During the course of the day, all the uneaten returns and other order mistakes were dumped whole into one of the lined up Zoo bowls. Once they had partially filled with returns from other customers, when a Zoo was ordered, the partially filled bowl would be brought out and a few new scoops of ice cream placed on top, plus all the toppings, to disguise the mess of old ice cream underneath. The concept was that by the time the customer got down to the lower level it would all be half melted together any way, and no one would notice.

    • @lesliealexander8565
      @lesliealexander8565 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha. You got that right. Mistakes certainly were part of what went into The Zoo. Not a bad thing. It wasn't like anyone touched it. And they weren't actually served to the customers...IOWs they weren't put on the table, at least not where I worked.

I feel bad for younger people that didn’t get to experience such ‘events’, because it was truly ‘eventful’ to go to Farrells. At that mall in Washington State, we also had a Mount Rainier on the menu. Looked like it sounds! The last time I had the pleasure of enjoying a Pig Trough was in downtown Seattle in the very early 90s. Some of the best times of childhood, although I was no longer a child the last visit. Farrell’s was a celebration of our wonderful childhoods. It’s what made American great . No child was left out . It was for all families to have a blast . You could eat ice cream until you puked . What could be better ? These were the great days of summer. The Farrell’s I went to was at the Ala Moana shopping center in Honolulu, Hawaii . This fun but inexpensive model was succeeded by family style pizza parlors with game rooms attached to them . They will never have clown sundaes , San Diego Zoos or Black Cherry hard candy .
