- Thanks to a viewer(s) who served on one of the "3 un-named/numbered" ships (you have no idea how bad I felt not giving them their due :-( here are our ships names:
USS Charleston (LKA-113)
USS Charleston was an amphibious cargo ship, equipped with a helicopter landing area on the stern, of the United States Navy. She was the fifth ship to be named Charleston for Charleston, South Carolina.
USS Charleston earned one campaign star for Vietnam War service. She served as a commissioned ship for 23 years and 4 months
USS El Paso (LKA-117)
USS EL PASO was the fifth and final CHARLESTON - class amphibious cargo ship. In the early 1980s, the EL PASO was transferred to the Naval Reserve Force, but returned to the active fleet shortly afterwards because of the need for additional sealift capacity. Decommissioned on April 21, 1994, the EL PASO was transferred to the Military Sealift Command in 1995 and moved to Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point, MD., for the Military Sealift Command conversion. However, this conversion was cancelled and the EL PASO was placed out of service on October 23, 1996. Since then, the EL PASO is laid up at the Naval Inactive Ships Maintenance Facility at Philadelphia, Penn.
USS Mobile (LKA-115)
was the third CHARLESTON - class amphibious cargo ship and the fourth ship in the Navy named after the city in Alabama. Initially laid down as AKA 115, the MOBILE was redesignated as LKA 115 on January 1, 1969.
Earned four campaign stars for Vietnam War service and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Operation Frequent Wind or 5 campaign stars if the Armed Forces Medal is exchanged for the 18th Vietnam campaign Operation Frequent Wind.

Something different! On July 4th, I went to a quiet Philadelphia Navy Base to film the BIG ships! If you like history and want to see battleships, here you are.
The entrance to the area is closed because of construction, so learned a new way to get around. I also learned the greenway is along the approach to Philadelphia International Airport. The end of the video turned into a plane spotting one.
I found it funny.

when I flew over Philad Navy YArd in 1980 they still had 3 straight deck WWII carriers there. It always bothered me to see planes or ships in mothballs. I experienced the USN in the 1980's and it was roaring and full of life.... And to see it sit sunbleached and empty was always hard. But I'm getting old. Now I just appreciate all the young sailors who worked hard, real hard and played hard while they were in. The sights and sounds of life on the water is not easily explained. Many want to go back....if even for just a day

Nice video, Great views of USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD-41), I am a Plankowner of her original crew, and was stationed on her 1984 to 88. I was also at her decommissioning in July 2022, she was looking rough when we toured her, nothing like the show Boat of my days on her. Thank you for the video.

The un numbered three ships were, USS MOBILE LKA 115, USS EL PASO LKA 117 and USS CHARLESTON LKA 113.
I served for 3 1/2 years on the USS Mobile. Great ship, better crew good chow and took me to a lot of countries.

I served aboard the El Paso from 75 to 78. Did two Med cruises, a Carib cruise, and a ton of marine landing ops all over the Atlantic. She was a good boat with a fine crew that won a long list of competitive awards. She's gone now. Dismantled for scrap only a few months ago. I think the Mobile met the same fate. I saw the El Paso in Brownsville, TX last year, but the slicing and dicing had already begun, so I couldn't go aboard. One of the guys told me the Mobile was also there. Not sure what Happened to the Charleston.
It was my first time witnessing the construction of large ships and airplanes up close. Some appeared to be undergoing maintenance. The harbor felt serene and peaceful. Thank you for the fantastic sharing. Greeting from WSDJ Melbourne L10
Welcome. Some of these ships have quite the history and are the end of their time. Others are "in reserve". This was filmed on our "Independence Day" (a federal holiday) so it was quite quiet and the only thing stirring was the Naval police who kept an eye on me as I went to each ship. It wasn't like I could take one & put it in the tub LOL, but I do understand security is important. I appreciate the comment.😊

Im currently not in the area, and this video makes me homesick in a good way, many great memories, and great times, the only thing missing from the video was a cheesesteak for lunch, lol!

They are trying to keep much of the green space just that, green. I hope they add some fountains near the entrance. Not sure when that will be done (dug up ALL the water pipes) but people & dogs sure love to walk around this area! Thanks for the support & keep doggie cool.

There definitely some history down by the river and yes, I wish for one day you could go on one, maybe the USS JFK. That is huge. I appreciate the support & your kind words. 😊
This tour brought back memories of my tour of the Kennedy when she was in for overhaul at the Yard in 1995. There were only three of us on the shipboard tour - myself, my friend Ted Pogmore ( Retired Senior Chief Petty Officer U.S.N. ) and a former Secret Service Agent from JFK's personal detail. Pogmore and I also received a tour of the Battleships Iowa BB - 61 and Wisconsin BB - 64 which were tied up next to each other in the reserve fleet at the time. What a great day that was to see two Battleships and an Aircraft Carrier and a still active Naval Shipyard.

I was on board USS Constellation CV-64 during SLEP from 90-93.

Many thanks for the video. At around 3:00 you note "3 un-named ships." I can help you out in this instance. The hull numbers have been painted over but having been stationed aboard one of them I easily recognize them; they are the 3 remaining Charleston class LKA's; the Charleston LKA 113, the Mobile LKA 115, and the El Paso LKA 117 (mine). The only way to identify which one is which would be to hike round to the stern where the name would appear. Regardless, It's nice for this old sailor to see his old gal still afloat, even if they're somewhat covering her identity. Thanks again.
Thank you, thank you for reaching out to help me. I felt horrible not knowing their names, but I wanted to show them in case someone like yourself would like seeing her. And the best case scenario occurred. I now have updated my thumbnail with their emblems and given some of their story in the description. The black SUV in what I now have read is the "Charleston" closest to the dock, was Naval police & that was the closest I could get. They are mainly in a fenced area. Maybe now I know more information, I can befriend them and can get to see their sterns. I also would like to find out the three ships adjacent to the McHenry. Again, I appreciate your help and your service to this country. 😊

@@nunyabizness6546 Hi. I was, what? Two decks below down in the radio shack. Loved the signal bridge. Spent many an hour gazing down upon the entire ship. She's now razor blades, sigh.

Was filmed on Independence day which was very hot, but breezy. Wish I could have gotten on at least the USS JFK, but that will never happen. Thx for the support!😊
Although I did not serve on any of these ships, I did some major repair work on , the El Paso, the Whidbey, Island, the John Kennedy, and the Mohawk class fleet tugs. I served in the Navy from August of 1972 until October 1993. I was billeted in Ship repair.
I really appreciate you took time to comment. I love finding out about how people were associated with these ships. (I'm still hoping to get on the USS New Jersey soon) I think whatever job you had as part of the Navy, all were part of a team that keeps us safe. Thank you for your service.🙂
I attended DC school at the shipyard in fall 1977. We had to eat our meals at a on base prison. Back then many WWII era ships were tied up there.

My pleasure. (Stay tuned, I'll be touring the USS New Jersey soon) I enjoyed going around filming but was disappointed in myself for not getting closer to the Kennedy. It is docked close to the area that actual ship building is occurring so getting close is dicey. I would like to do a vid on the Kennedy alone if I could gain access. As far as I knew it was going to be a museum, but on Wikipedia which may/maynot be correct it states, "In late 2017, the Navy revoked John F. Kennedy's "donation hold" status and designated her for dismantling. There are still several groups, from Florida, Maine and Rhode Island, with the assistance of the USS John F. Kennedy Veteran's Association, hoping to persuade the Navy to reinstate the "donation hold" status, while they pursue the goal of obtaining her as a museum." It doesn't seem promising.
I helped build the USS Hue City.

I worked their Philadelphia ship yard 2021 and was able to get a tour on all the ships with my staff and supervisors. 3:58, I got lost on her multiple times USS Ft Mchenry. I was on the JFK and never found the brig. @7:15, I was told after the ships name and hull number has been painted over it means the Navy doesn't officially own it anymore.
So cool you were able to tour them. I understand the risks, but I would still love to get on them, esp the JFK. I appreciate your taking the time to let me know your experience down the Naval Yard. Thx😀
btw, In the summer, its hot and humid in the ships. The coolest part of the ship is below the waterline maybe 10 degrees cooler at the most. And freezing cold in the winter.

While I was on the JFK CVN-67 in 2021, there were Navy staff removing parts and memorabilia to send to the new JFK CVN -79
Do people also live in those houses or just small businesses? Is there a museum down there?
I believe it's only businesses or they would have to have bus routes for children. As far as a museum, I found out alot about the area on their website but they do have a chapel dedicated to the "Four Chaplains" I'll film it if someone, like a vet, knows of it would like to see it.

What I understand about these moored vessels is that they have been decommissioned and will no longer to be used and are considered "retired". I believe they just haven't gotten around to painting over the number which was great for me because I was able to figure out it's name. LOL. Thanks for watching😊
