She resided in the Shangyang Palace in Luoyang, where palace maids Meng Fan and Meng Fu found themselves entangled in the bloody power struggles of the harem. With the help of eunuch Xiao Ma, Meng Fan managed to survive in the treacherous palace.
Empress Wei, driven by her ambitions, meddled in political affairs, while Wu Sansi gained favor, causing chaos in the court. Meng Fan befriended Shangguan Wan'er and deeply felt the hardships of survival within the palace. Princess Anle, desiring the emperor's affection, used Meng Fu to conspire with Empress Wei to eliminate the Crown Prince Li Zhongjun.
Princess Taiping sent Meng Fan to contact Li Longji, and a secret affection blossomed between them. To assist Li Longji in his pursuit of success, Meng Fan agreed to become Emperor Zhongzong's consort and exposed the ambitions of Empress Wei and Princess Anle. Empress Wei and Princess Anle conspired to poison Emperor Zhongzong, who, aware of their plot, drank the poison. Crown Prince Li Zhongmao ascended the throne, with Empress Wei becoming the Empress Dowager and ruling as a regent.
