Great review! I personally own a Tamron 35-150 and was wondering if you feel like the 180 is too redundant with 150/what alternatives you would consider if I wanted more reach? I use an A7IV and mainly shoot sports/events btw
I think it's a bit redundant and wouldn't buy another lens just for the additional 30mm. For indoor events or things in low light, I'd stick with the 35-150 and hopefully that's long enough. But for sports, check out Sony's 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 GM. I've used it handheld for football and loved it. For reference, was able to shoot around 6400 ISO with 1/800 sec shutter for college football at night. So as long as you've got some decent available light, it's a good option with a lot more reach.
@@ChrisHagan awesome, thank you very much for the quick response! I plan on renting that lens or a Tamron with similar features and then I’ll try to start saving up my pennies lol
I don't think the biggest elephant is the 20mm but how much the stabilization might fight with your pans in video since it doesn't have a mode selector switch (which Tamron uses on lenses like the 50-400). I've seen video evidence that leads to contradictory conclusions -- both that it's fine and also that it's terrible and creates jerky pans at times -- so it might be helpful to weigh in there a bit more specifically (obviously the now discounted G1 version without stabilization is an option!). I can't really tell from your footage since there's a lot of motion blur (sports people crank our shutter speed up past the 180 degree rule; I film 120fps with 1/500 often). Buying a lens in this focal range is clearly the most complicated piece of the puzzle for most of us these days with so many options and tradeoffs.
@@rl-films Yeah.. my video example wasn't the best. Wish I would've gotten more for this video. I'll try to get more in the future and update my findings. And the A7IV's rolling shutter is gross and doesn't help matters. But I do like the options in the telephoto category so we can all pick which works best for us, just hard to find one that checks all the boxes unless you go with the GM mark II.
Wow, your photos are so sharp !!
It’s like you knew I needed this video and made it for me! Love it! Thanks, Chris!
@@Caleb_Denison my guy! Always happy to help!
