I received a set of palm chisels for a birthday present more than 15 years ago. To my eternal shame I haven't yet even taken them out of their box. Watching your videos always puts me in mind of these chisels, so hopefully I'll soon start to utilise them. Cheers Chris!

@@keshermedia no. It just doesn't occur to me to use them until AFTER I've finished with the rasps, files, knives and scrapers. I don't do much in the way of intricacy so they get overlooked!

It takes some time and experience to realise that almost every tool needs proper setup after buying. Now I realized I probably have really decent chisels but I had no idea how to take care of them. Thank you for this enlightenment!

I know what you mean. The first quality chisels I bought were pretty sharp and I thought that was good enough. I was terrified to try and sharpen them in case I ruined them!

I must say I'm relieved by watching this! It's been many years since I last used chisels...I thought I had lost my touch due to arthritis and carpal tunnel...but after watching this and your other videos it's the wood and chisels! I seriously need to practice my sharpening skills. Clearly I've forgotten more than I remember. @KingBespokenCreations I forgot to ask you before...is it the smooth leather side or the rougher suede side of leather we use for stropping please? Thanks again for lessons

    • @KingBespokeCreations

Either will work but I tend to head to the suede side

Those chisels look like they will suit your needs quite well.
Most higher end brands, are going to grind it close, and leave final honing up to you. But the quality of the grinding and the steel used should be close enough to at least get you started if you don't have a way to hone the edges.
I like your sharpening and honing set up there.

How did you polish the V gouge ? I tried but struggled to see what I was doing…however as you said not to bad out of the box.

    • @KingBespokeCreations
      @KingBespokeCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +2

For the outside of the V I sharpen like two flat blades and round over the point at the bottom. On the inside, a neat trick is to use a polishing wheel on a Dremel!

@@KingBespokeCreations you’re costing me a fortune 😡 I’ve already bought the Dremel…and the plunge router…and the Versatip…after recently watching your videos! Now I’ve bought your book !
However I borrowed this exact set from a friend to carve EVA into a box lid, I filled it with resin and it turned out fantastic. My very first letter carving and resin project…however I struggled to sharpen that b gouge which is doubt the most useful from the set. 🤓

BTW I got that versatip two days ago and it’s brilliant…I have garage workshop without power and to be able to try pyrography without smoking my flat out is ace…totally recommend it.

I'm about to order a 20mm bent gouge from the same company. How do you find the quality of the product for carving kuksas and other bowls by hand? I'm afraid of breaking the product. I had cheaper Beavercraft gouges, but they broke at the tips.

    • @KingBespokeCreations

I’ve not carved a bowl personally, but I have done a lot of picture carving with these. I must say they have been spot on. Never chipped an edge 👍

Hello there! I know this video is over a year old, but I'm still hoping you'll see my comment and reply. 😀 I starting to do some relief carving and had watched quite a few videos on tool sharpening. No one has your setup so I was wondering what it is...a slab of granite/marble with some diamond strips\pads glued on or what - it's pretty awesome. Tell me please!

Is it just coincidence, that they are Czech made, one of the best-known places in the world for puppet making? Hand-carved marionnettes.
