I love this. Keep in mind, conembol and concacaf just agreed again to let concacaf teams play on Copa libertadores. This is great for MLS teams to keep going.
The point that most resonated with me is that none of these matches are being played in Mexico. They should just focus on promoting the Champions League/Cup a lot more than they have been. Plus, there is value in scarcity, in making matches mean more. Have the Sounders and Timbers play just twice a year. Only play Liga MX clubs in the Champions League/Cup. One of the reasons why the NFL is so popular is because of that scarcity; it makes top matchups mean much more. As a result, they are anticipated so much more versus when soccer teams play each other often.
Very good points. The Champions Cup could be so much better than it is now. I agree with you that that tournament definitely needs to be promoted more. leagues Cup feels like a competitor against that competition (even though you can qualify for it through Leagues Cup)

You nailed it with the points on the "new rivalries" tagline and the MLS venue exclusivity. I think it may be a slow start to this new tournament, but overall I see it growing with time and being a great way to actually gauge where both leagues are at against each other. I'm excited for it.
Some fair points, but I kinda like that every club gets to play in the tournament. It opens up at least the chance of of a Cinderella story. Also hoping it might attract new American fans who resonate with the college madness feel. We’ll see!
I mean, one thing I like about this, it's a potential to win silverware. My club is Tijuana, no matter what, call me die hard if you like. But whilst only being formed in 2007, the club only really has one major trophy, the 2012 Liga MX Apertura season. So I would hope my club would go all out on this opportunity in a city where it's now becoming more Baseball. To finally see the club win something again and qualify for the Champions Cup.

As a Mexican I find this tournament insulting; our local league gets delayed, our players could get injured, most of the matches will be boring to watch, and everything just to fill their own pockets, and what do we get in return? nothing, all matches will be played in the US and if for some reason I wanted to watch the full tournament I would have to buy the MLS Season Pass. I still think if the Leagues Cup wants to exist, it should be the top 18 MLS and 10 LMX clubs, plus add in 4 CPL clubs and have a fully NAFU Cup similar to the UNCAF and CFU Cups that exist as CCC qualifiers. This gives it some meaning in the grander scheme of CONCACAF *AND* a club has to qualify for it, meaning no bottom feeders.
It just seems like another money grab, Orlando’s CCL game against tigres felt special because we’d never qualified before, but now we’re getting international games every year.
I feel that. When Crew played against Monterrey in 2021, I was so excited to see that type of game because it was so rare. I will say though, I'm really looking forward to seeing Crew play Club America
Hey man I appreciate this video, I'm a Mexican fan (living in Mexico), was looking for insight about how the MLS fans feel about this, and we're in the same road. I personally don't feel engage with this, feels cheap to be honest, FMF took us out of Copa Libertadores (Playing against South American teams), and since them they just want to keep pushing us into American Market (even more after they took out relegation from our league) , don't want to be disrespecful but it's not helping us to raise the level of our league but the other way around, and with that making both leagues feel more even, when IMO, Liga MX should increise the level playing in Copa Libertadores and then with CCL helping increise the level of MLS and Central American teams, or even better and just have one tournament for the whole continent (The Americas). Anyway, greetings from Mexico :).
I feel what you are saying, and like you, I love hearing what you think from a Liga MX perspective. I know that the leagues are trying to grow together, but I see what you are saying that pushing into the American market maybe isn't pushing Liga MX to their best.
@@Anthony.LaRosa i mean MLS is not bad as we (90's kid) always heard in the past, MLS is better in more aspects but it feels like a "marriage" you know the weird feeling when you suddenly date someone just casual and then she says "i love you" then is has passed 3 months and she wants to get married so fast that you don't even process the info, you just remember you were bangin' chicks out there and you are just stuck with one, and I think you also want to play against Copa Libertadores teams, not just with us, or put some spicy with central american teams or caribbean but smh maybe is the geography that doomed us to play with mediocre central/caribbean temas and be so far from south america
As someone who got into MLS because they added a team in Saint Louis I’m looking forward to any time my team can play for now at least. Also they got put into an insanely good group that will be fun to watch.
I’m a new fan of soccer so even catching up with normal MLS league play mid season has been interesting yet difficult. This sport probably more than any other plays so many other tournaments that it’s hard to get my head around which games counts for which cup and what all the international tournaments are all about. But on the flip side, having a “fresh start” for all the clubs plus getting to see the MX clubs in action has been cool and following the bracket from week to week feels more exciting than trying to get to know the teams by following their record through the season. Plus with Messi joining Inter-Miami you have the big story of him getting to win something significant asap (which gets people more interested in watching to see if he can pull it off), as opposed to the more likely story of him taking a last place club to the middle of the pack by the end of the MLS season over the course of a few months.
Liga MX just started 3 weeks ago so that should give MLS teams an advantage. Shame on FMF for allowing more of these molero cups. Anyways Cruz Azul is currently the worst team in the league so Inter Mami should be able to win.
Loons fan here. So far, I've really enjoyed Leagues Cup. The atmosphere at Allianz was really cool with all kinds of El Tri and Liga MX fans in attendance, and not just fans of Puebla. I do wish that hosting alters every year or something because having it in the US every year doesn't seem a) fair or b) exciting. I understand why they might want to do that, but I'd love to attend some away games in Mexico.
The Pumas players really thought it was a derby against CF Montreal last night for whatever reason. It felt really weird to watch them trying to start shit at times.
I think you're right, manufactured rivalries is a good title for the event, that mostly benefits all the big boys behind the curtain. I just don't understand why some of these matches aren't played on Mexican stadium, this is clearly a lopsided home court advantage. It's about marketing and the Benjamins. Capital that are generating the Messi Mania, no doubt one of the greatest players that ever played a game. Is highly likely that all is already setup for Miami and Messi to win the cup. That translates into millions of dollars to the executives that manage the business, because at the end of the day, that's what it's all about, Business...
This tournament was imposed on Mexican soccer because US soccer and Concacaf hold Mexican soccer hostage thanks to the illicit activities of certain Mexican federation officials who were never indicted on the condition that Mexico leave copa libertadores and comply with the wishes of US soccer and Concacaf.
Valid concerns. It doesn't really seem like the Liga MX teams care and the fans are not selling, at least going by the number of complimentary or discounted tickets I'm seeing for Audi Field this weekend. It seems to me that Apple buying the rights to air CONCACAF Champions Cup and disributing it would have been a great way to promote the tournament. They could have worked with the federation to move the dates back a few weeks
I’m confused tigres won clausura and Pachuca won apetura then when both of them played to see who was the better champion in campeón de campeones tigres won why are they not advancing to round of 16????
I'm excited for leagues cup, it sounds interesting and I hope it's better than CCL, CCL is a mickey mouse cup, literally nobody cares about CCL in mexico. A few things to point out. First of all, i feel like theres a lot groups, too many teams qualify to KOs, MLS is trying to make an unnecesarily rivarly but i guess its fine. Praying for libertadores to be back asap
I love having everyone involved, but I don't love that for most teams in MLS, there's two games. One of them is against a Liga MX club. And then there's a bunch of time off. So here's how I would do it. First group stage, there's 8 groups. As of now, that means 5 or 6 teams in each group. I'm not giving anyone a bye, but recent champions get priority to be placed in groups with a smaller number of teams. In the next stage, I have a guiding principle. What we want to see is the best teams against the best teams, the mid teams against the mid teams, and the bad teams against the bad teams. So after the first group stage, the top 2 from each group progress to the group stage proper. Very standard- four groups of four. The top two from each of those groups will be considered the top 8 teams of this year's tournament, and they will share a pot for the seeding of next year's first group stage. The next 8 from the group stage proper will also be seeded together. We proceed from the group stage proper to standard knockout matchups as you would expect. First place of this group against second place of that group. As all of this is happening, I want to do a couple of other things. I would put the last place teams from the first group stage in a big group with one another, and they all get 7 games against each other. The remaining teams- the ones that were not last place but not in the top 2 places- get resorted into 4 groups. I'll call this the Big Group Stage. The top two from each group will share a pot when next year's group stages are worked out, as well as third and fourth place teams, and so on. In an ordinary tournament, this wouldn't mean much. But in a tournament that has international implications, there are additional stakes. Neither league wants to be the one that has all of these last place teams, and fans of both leagues will argue about which league is better from top to bottom even if the eventual winner is from the other league. I hope the tournament progresses is a direction that approximates something like this.
Good video, just small correction with the All-State Continental Classico. I believe the federation has said that it wont be against Mexico every year instead playing various north/south American Teams. (I could be mis-remembering though)
Messi debut is gonna be an this tournament their gonna earn crazy money by his debut and if Messi gets Elmited early people are gonna stop watching this tournament
i think it will be fun but the mls is kinda like overplaying the hype and also the fact that its only in MLS stadiums kinda sucks but i think for the first year i can get by it. Loons szn ticket holder btw and we get to host two games so im alright with it
Crew got one of the best groups. Saint Louis and Club America. I’m exited to go to the Club America game! I would love to go to the STL one too, but I’m out of town :/
honestly couldn't disagree more and left the video feeling like I just watched someone complain about a cool competition we get to watch. As a new fan, I think this is a great idea to get newer MLS/Liga MX fans further invested in our leagues. I don't understand how a low table MLS team vs low table Liga MX is worst than having two lower tier MLS teams go against each other in league play, no one cares outside of those fans... should we throw away regular season games and only keep the games the neutrals will watch? Idk, found myself disagreeing with every point and wondering why put so much effort into making such a negative video.
Mexican fans see this tournament as a poor attempt to saturate their teams schedule to have an excuse to refuse their participation in Copa Libertadores, which is a competition the Mexicans are totally missing because there they had a lot of competitive games against Brazilian and Argentinian clubs
I could see this cup being a bigger deal for supporters of clubs that just won’t make it to the CCC. But I totally agree with your criticisms. One criticism for me is that there should be some matches hosted in Mexico.
i don’t think the majority of mls fans watch CCL or many of the other tournaments you mentioned so i think the leagues cup is a good opportunity to get those one off matches between teams that would regularly never play each other and because of those new opportunities i think all sides could improve bc i’d be damned if dallas lost to Necaxa…. i think in the future the leagues cup could resemble the new world cup format, inviting all the central and south american leagues and even replacing the CCL
As a Liga MX fan, I did NOT ask for this. As a matter of fact, I asked NOT to be in it. Liga MX is not the effing NFL, conferences are bullshit. F the MLS.
This video just confirms what I thought of MLS after I tried to understand the completions formats. MLS is a huge mess. I only understand the leagues cup and I think having 3 teams in a group is terrible
I like it. The biggest problem with concacaf is we dont have high level competition. If we start making clubs more competitive in our confederation it will stop the exporting of high talented players to Europe or god forbid Saudi Arabia. Overall don't be shocked if one day this becomes a single league for the 3 countries. More money means more talent stays due to higher incomes.
Wait, so based on how the teams were divided into each group, you're telling me that there are at least 11 MLS (LAFC + 10 others) teams guaranteed to be in the next round against a minimum of 3 Liga Mx teams (Pachuca + 2 others), and NONE of the matches are going to be played in Mexico??? Not to mention that the MLS teams have been in their regular season for weeks now, how is any of this even fair to Liga Mx?
As a somewhat casual with league pass, this is my first time seeing mls vs Liga mx, don’t know where to get those other tournaments…probably cable which I don’t have. That would be my rebuttal to this video’s argument if champions cup is better great, leagues cup is accessible
Great video, and I totally agree about them over-saturating the market with meaningless tournaments. However I think this could have been a good opportunity to get other CONCACAF nations involved. They have a load of US-Can-Mexico games, but an MLS Carribean cup, with winners from all over the carribean, could be a good opportunity to help those nations bring in revenue, and it would be mutually beneficial. Especially if they did it as a tour of the carribean, US sports fans bringing money to those nations would be a beautiful thing.
As an MLS fan I really don’t care about matches against LMX. It’s not on the same level as the champions league. Leagues cup seems like a cheap knockoff of UCL.
As An Oklahoman with NOBODY besides Tulsa FC and the On-Hiatus OKC Energy. I LOVE LEAGUES Cup because Rooting for MLS versus Liga MC in the CCL is Usually the Only Time I pay Attention. Just wish it wasn't Overlapping with the Women's World Cup because it makes it hard to pay Proper Attention to Either Group Stage.
With all respect to the Americans, this is a setback for us (the Mexicans) because time is wasted playing against you that instead of playing against the South Americans in Libertadores and Sudamericana, we already had an advance reaching the finals and beating them, we only lacked the mischief of them (because we already have the quality) and we wanted to measure ourselves with them now. Greetings from Mexico.
Thank u. Thank u. Also all games on usa soil. And top of that. Almost all games on apple tv This is whole thing i know this is a joke. This just caters to MLs and usa crowd. Just like mls vs liga mx. That made up liga mx champion vs mls champion. Its a joke, no one values other usa propaganda to push this anti mexican shit. How mls is better than liga mx. mexican fans want to their clubs to go and play in sudamerica n libertadores. MLS N CONCACAF IS FORCING LIGA MX NOT TO DO THAT. If they go, mls and liga mx will come together. This is how i know USA is trying to merge concacaf with comnebol. Its going to happen. Right now, copa libertadores is losing money. Usa needs thos fans. This is why in argentina, they talk bad about liga mx. Which is reasonable but espn argentina pundits or tyc. They never talk down on mls. Thats because mLs has the dollar. Right now, south qmerica leagues are in crisis. Exception of brazil. Argentina, ecuador, colombia. They need that money U look at staduims in argentina. They need money. Mark my word. They will be a merger of conmebol n concacaf and usa will be in charge
At least this will be an early chance for Messi to win a cup with Inter Miami. There’s almost no shot they can win MLS this season but maybe they can shine in the Leagues Cup
Man, this MLS vs Liga MX thing is whack. It's clear that Liga MX is superior to MLS quality wise. Not saying MLS is terrible but it's not on the level of Liga MX. In my opinion I rather see Liga MX back in libertadores. Those games where always exciting. America, Cruz Azul, Pumas, Chivas, Tigers, Toluca, Pachuca etc vs River, Boca Joinors, Fulmenense, Independiente, Emelec, etc. In my opinion, this will be another Liga MX final. All I can say is.. Cruz Azul is the inaugural champion 😂😂😂
The rivalries commercial is a joke. MLS does awful enough about creating domestic rivalries. I’m a Charlotte supporter. MLS props up Charlotte vs Nashville as the biggest thing since the invention of religion thousands of years ago. Most us Charlotte fans don’t give a rats ass about Nashville and view FC Cincinnati as a gigantic rival because of the Queen City identity and MLS won’t even market it or acknowledge it.
The central American clubs are a non factor. This is an upgraded concacaf champions league in every way. Concacaf champions leagues should be done away with and the leagues cup be made a season long tournament. Invite the 2 best teams of all of central America and call it a day 😂
What kind of garbage u talking about. This is a scam. Worst thing is almost all games will be on apple tv?? Seriously. All games are on usa soil??? What kind of crap is this.
I saw your derrogatory points as too superfluos. Personally, the big picture is having a direct comparison. Liga Mx was by far the best league in the north, now that MLS is growing and USA national team is better than mexico. Even if its with alternative teams everybody wins. Also, expenses will be mounstrous, i doubt it will ever be this big. Best best would be a 12 or 10 team tournament. My 2cents.

Great idea
By the way, sorry if their's any error, I'm not use to write in english at all. Have a nice day.
I feel what you are saying, and like you, I love hearing what you think from a Liga MX perspective. I know that the leagues are trying to grow together, but I see what you are saying that pushing into the American market maybe isn't pushing Liga MX to their best.
@@ftgrimm1016 Tus ingles es mejor que mi español jaja. Gracias por el comentario.
It’s been exciting so far 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
I think this is okay but I don’t know if it should be an every year thing. And maybe this shouldn’t just be vs liga mx each time.
As someone who got into MLS because they added a team in Saint Louis I’m looking forward to any time my team can play for now at least. Also they got put into an insanely good group that will be fun to watch.
One month later: the only reason of this tournament was to watch Messi… and it has been worth it 😅😅😅
Nah this is hype. I love having all the teams involved. This is the real tournament now.
Three countries.
Two leagues.
One cup.
I love everything about it. Everything.
My guess they decide the bye way before Tigres won liga mx but your right it’s makes no sense
How many games have the MLS teams played so far? And how many have LigaMx teams played in their league?
Mls 29 teams vs 18 and each group 2mls vs 1mx 😂 2/3 teams qualify to the tourny. The odds 🤑
I'm really excited for this tournament, imperfect as it is.
And most of the bottom feeders are the querter finalist right now
I'm excited for leagues cup, it sounds interesting and I hope it's better than CCL, CCL is a mickey mouse cup, literally nobody cares about CCL in mexico. A few things to point out.
First of all, i feel like theres a lot groups, too many teams qualify to KOs, MLS is trying to make an unnecesarily rivarly but i guess its fine. Praying for libertadores to be back asap
Im sorry but this a scam. Only way to watch is through apple tv. All games are in usa soil. Yea.... THIS THING IS CATER TO USA
@@kem1233not true you can watch it in unvisian Lmao and some matches are free anyways so your lieing to your self
Makes sense that you don’t like this tournament, you’re not a real fan if you only pay attention to the bigger teams…
Good video, just small correction with the All-State Continental Classico. I believe the federation has said that it wont be against Mexico every year instead playing various north/south American Teams. (I could be mis-remembering though)
You are 100% correct. Missed that somehow. It does say it will be against a “top-tier opponent from North, Central, or South America.”
@Anthony.LaRosa yeah its still a cash grab and basically an extra January "Camp Cupcake," but I am glad that it at least will be various opponents 😂
Tigres and Crew Can become friends with this Cup. I’m try so hard >:3
The Zelarayan connection
The US needs this tournament with these many teams to get ready to host the world cup....
I hate that Leagues cup gets spots for champions league and the Caribbean only has 3 spots
honestly couldn't disagree more and left the video feeling like I just watched someone complain about a cool competition we get to watch.
God bless their hearts for trying.
Just won it with the Rapids on FM. Was fun the first time, but then you play LAFC 5 more times for the rest of the season and it gets tiring quick
We need to invite South American clubs because that will bring true variety 🌎🤘
I’m pretty sure a lot of Mexican people will go and support their teams just like the Mexican National team
i don’t think the majority of mls fans watch CCL or many of the other tournaments you mentioned so i think the leagues cup is a good opportunity to get those one off matches between teams that would regularly never play each other and because of those new opportunities i think all sides could improve bc i’d be damned if dallas lost to Necaxa….
i think in the future the leagues cup could resemble the new world cup format, inviting all the central and south american leagues and even replacing the CCL
You also forgot that people been asking for mls to be an copa libertias for years now
Let’s get it on, Vamos Liga MX this is going to be fun.
Sounds like a hectic schedule.
The fact that every game is a home game for the MLS sides is kinda BS.
As a Liga MX fan, I did NOT ask for this. As a matter of fact, I asked NOT to be in it. Liga MX is not the effing NFL, conferences are bullshit. F the MLS.
People said the same thing with the super liga but it ended up being awesome
To be fair that was 8 teams
This video just confirms what I thought of MLS after I tried to understand the completions formats. MLS is a huge mess. I only understand the leagues cup and I think having 3 teams in a group is terrible
nice essay dude 👌
I think match day 1 matches are an USA and second game for Mexico and same thing with the knockout stage that’s the only way I could think of
I hope there's no injuries, feels like a lot of games. I hope Chivas do well other than that I'm not paying too much attention to this.
As a somewhat casual with league pass, this is my first time seeing mls vs Liga mx, don’t know where to get those other tournaments…probably cable which I don’t have. That would be my rebuttal to this video’s argument if champions cup is better great, leagues cup is accessible
I think this is a very solid point. All the games being streamed in a reliable place is a great aspect of this tournament.
Not that matter but concaf nations league is happing again an 3 months
The reason it’s already Gonna be here already soon is because it’s gonna be a copa America 2024 qualifier
I didn’t know it was going to be played in a month interesting.
Personally I’ve been enjoying it, but I consume all the Footy 😄 disappointed San Luis & St Louis didn’t share a group
As an MLS fan I really don’t care about matches against LMX. It’s not on the same level as the champions league. Leagues cup seems like a cheap knockoff of UCL.
Maybe the first week of this tournament changed your mind. Tournament is probably the best thing to happen so far for these leagues.
There have been some very fun moments in that first set of matches
As An Oklahoman with NOBODY besides Tulsa FC and the On-Hiatus OKC Energy. I LOVE LEAGUES Cup because Rooting for MLS versus Liga MC in the CCL is Usually the Only Time I pay Attention.
Just wish it wasn't Overlapping with the Women's World Cup because it makes it hard to pay Proper Attention to Either Group Stage.
It builds the rivalry between both leagues to compete, but pausing the season for a huge 3-4 week tournament ruins teams
But anyways excited for it, won’t ever see a league vs league format
All I want is Portland vs Seattle sometime during the tournament.
Messi effect makes it all go away😊
Almost all haha. Gotta love that start though
@@Anthony.LaRosa THAT FINAL HAD TO
With all respect to the Americans, this is a setback for us (the Mexicans) because time is wasted playing against you that instead of playing against the South Americans in Libertadores and Sudamericana, we already had an advance reaching the finals and beating them, we only lacked the mischief of them (because we already have the quality) and we wanted to measure ourselves with them now. Greetings from Mexico.
Thank u. Thank u. Also all games on usa soil. And top of that. Almost all games on apple tv
This is whole thing i know this is a joke.
They need that money
U look at staduims in argentina. They need money. Mark my word. They will be a merger of conmebol n concacaf and usa will be in charge
is going to be sick.
I hope!
At least this will be an early chance for Messi to win a cup with Inter Miami. There’s almost no shot they can win MLS this season but maybe they can shine in the Leagues Cup
It’d be impressive if Messi could take them to the playoffs. They haven’t won a match in months. It’s either a late draw or an embarrassing loss
Messi can't save Inter Miami
I completely disagree with this guy . Im totally interested and im going to watch and its good for soccer culture in north America .
Is going to give a chance to shine to a lot of team that will be out of playoffs. For that I am for it.
I'm an MLS day-one, Chicago Fire day-one. It feels like a cash grab with training wheels on MLS. I'm kinda done with all of it.
I just hope the play on the field does it justice.
Cruz Azul is the inaugural champion 😂😂😂
i'm actually excited for Charlotte FC vs NExcasa
I wish the CCL had gotten the hype and popularity of it's UEFA equivalent.
0:24 no
if we want to improve we have to play the libertardores
The central American clubs are a non factor.
This is an upgraded concacaf champions league in every way.
Concacaf champions leagues should be done away with and the leagues cup be made a season long tournament.
Invite the 2 best teams of all of central America and call it a day 😂
What kind of garbage u talking about. This is a scam. Worst thing is almost all games will be on apple tv?? Seriously. All games are on usa soil??? What kind of crap is this.
I’m going to STL vs Club América
I'm at Crew vs Club America. Super hyped for that.
Thankfully something for DC to get some international experience that’s not a friendly
good for MLS bad for Liga MX
This would have been great as a cup tournament. Mexico cancelled its domestic cup and this would fill that void beautifully.
Thats weird . They can just the best club from every concacaf team and make it League club .
My 2cents.
I would actually watch this man, cuz Messi and Busquets gonna have their Inter Miami debut for this..
