    I watched this awhile ago when I was first getting into the music of Perfume. Now I am a big fan, and believe this man to be a musical genius on par with many of the greats (Bacharach, ABBA, Kraftwerk etc.), just his work with Perfume makes him legendary. And to see such a simple studio create such great work is truly interesting and inspiring. I've been listening to the new Perfume release Plasma obsessively, and find his song-writing and arranging abilities to be at the highest level, still. I have never known, though, if the guitar on Perfume is him or someone else.

      He is amazing. I'm sure you probably already listened to Capsule too, but if not check out songs like 'Transparent' 'Control' and 'In The Rain.' Also the last Capsule album 'Metro Pulse' is quite similar to Plasma, very 80s vibes. Nakata is a genius - I feared he'd lost it with the commercial EDM sounds of Cosmic Explorer and Wave Runner, but he's back to making music that is as good as anything in his amazing 20+ years discography. As for the guitar, I always assumed it was samples since it mostly seems like repeating loops rather than 'live' - but could be wrong.

    I discovered Yasutaka Nakata in 2014. I have since bought every CD with his work on it. Early on, these were imports from Japan - worth it!!!
    Like others listed below, I include him in the very top rank of musicians in popular music. My favorite work has a harder edge to it: most of capsule, mid-period Perfume, MEG Step, but all of it is worth owning. Just on raw musical talent: melody, harmony, counterpoint, rhythm, SYNTHESIS, arrangements - he's #1.
    Can't get enough!!

    1. Don't make a stock of songs
    2. Do not rent (making music in a rented studio does not give freedom)
    3. Do everything by yourself as much as possible
    4. Have beer at a club 😂 (don't forget to socialize with people and have fun!)
    5. Ringtone is silence, black display (I want to hear music when I want to hear it, and ringtone is not that music)
    6. Do not listen to music while moving/doing something (because I will focus on the music and pay attention to details, and you need to enjoy the different sounds at different places)
    7. Don't take medicine until last minute (only take medicine when you need it during emergency)
    8. Decide what to eat before working (enjoy food! Eating is a source of energy and motivation)
    9. Be inspired by future pros (get inspired from watching people have fun while working on their job)
    10. Make music that I want to hear myself.

    Nakata's only possible obstacle to international fame may be the reluctance (at least perceived) of English-speaking countries (US, esp) to sing-along in a foreign language, as much of the world was compelled to do (in English) with The Beatles. Admittedly, it is a big obstacle, but the brilliance of a great pop artists can break through this reticence, as has been proven before. If Nakata doesn't do it, someone else will, someday. I still believe in the power of music to change the world.

    He might be the best pop songwriter in the world already.
    I've read he is not totally comfortable with fame and popularity. Well, he better get used to it. Once his reputation breaks thru in The West, he could be as famous
    as The Beatles.
    Yes. I used the "B" word: Beatles. His talent is in a league with theirs, for sure.
    I've been listening to great pop music for over 1/2 a century.
    I know what I'm talking about.
    Yasutaka Nakata is The Real Deal.

  • @notrombones5041
    @notrombones5041 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I realize the the techno trappings (mechanized beats) and vocoder-alteration of the voices in Nakata's work is a turn-off for some listeners. But the melodic inventiveness, structure, and masterful modulations are umistakeable characteristics of a master pop composer--Probably
    the best Japan has ever produced (with the composer behind AVTechNO perhaps being 2nd?).
    I definitely find this music to be fresher and more melodically inventive than most of what I hear in The West these days.

    OK, I qualified my statement. And your response: chirp...chirp...
    Nakata is as capable musically as my own heroes and musical role models such as McCartney, Bacharach, Jobim, Hatch, Wonder, etc etc etc, and he is clearly SUPERIOR to the current crop of hit songwriters, who write mainly to the star-power appeal of the singer, than they do to the actual lasting excellence of a quality song. If you want to discuss this point using specific songs and their structure/analysis/appeal, fire away.

  • @notrombones5041
    @notrombones5041 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Being a traditionalist myself, I tend to agree with you on the band/collaboration aspects. Actually, I found Nakata quite by accident, since I am not normally a fan of DJ/dance music. Normally, I listen to progressive rock like Gentle Giant, or jazz like Chick Corea, or varied artists such as Mew, Beck, Cocteau Twins, etc etc

    • @jeraldhughes7808

      VERYery much like my process. I started listening to Yes and ELP in 1977, and I've stayed within progressive rock and generally more complex music genres. Got to Yasutaka via Kids React TH-cam video my kids found with Kyary Pamyu. I could tell just from Pon Pon Pon that this was music worth following up on. Second piece heard was MEG 'Why', 3rd was Perfume 'Edge'. Multiple 'omg' moments, right in a row.

    • @notrombones5041
      @notrombones5041 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jeraldhughes7808 - ---
      Nakata is just a flat-out phenomenal melody writer who seems to have a total mastery of song structure and all its variations. I'd love to hear his songs done by a great band with top-flight musicians and strong vocals and harmonies.
      Have you heard "Transparent", by Capsule? What a chord progression---OMG!! A Unique and magical song, IMO (Steely Dan meets Journey?).
      And songs like "Electric Light Moonlight) (Capsule), and "Have a Stroll" and "575" (Perfume)----I swear to god, these are huge hits, if done by a bit more mainstream-type (i.e. non-techno) band.
      I have this obsession that many of his songs could break BIG in America. It may sound crazy, but it has happened before----a song sung entirely in Japanese went to #1 in America and much of the world in 1963; Not a word in English, but the beautiful melody and elegant simplicity of the song captured the hearts of millions. That song was named (to appeal to a US audience) "Sukiyaki".
      This is JMO, but I think Nakata's songs could do the same thing, and perhaps many times over. If Nakata were to truly break internationally as a songwriter, he'd be a billionaire in a couple of years.
      Almost a "1-man Beatles" .
      Of course, this is JMO. :)
      I'm in my 70s now, but if I were young and playing in a good band again, I'd be doing "Spider" (Capsule) and "Clockwork" (Perfume), with that band, for sure.
