  • While on vacation in Scotland I found the St. Andrews Golf Co. Laying claim to the title of oldest clubmaker in the world. They have the George Nicoll and Tom Stewart golf lines and make the club the way they did in the original makers period. This is a tour do the facility with the gracious owner Hamish Steedman.
Thanks to the people at St. Andrew Golf Co for the info and allowing us to tour the building. Truly a great bunch of professionals. for more info use the links below.

Might I add to the list of hickory clubmakers - K. Leonard Hickory Golf.

I can't thank you enough for this wonderful tour of the St Andrews Golf Co. As a collector of hickory clubs (specifically putters), it was very educational to see the entire club building process from start to finish. In another video, as a golf historian, you might talk about how the golf ball's evolution was instrumental in the club making process as well. Very interesting to anyone who has a liking for golf history.

Great video Jim, just had a chance to view it here in Louisville, Ky. As a side note: I work at Cherokee Golf Course the oldest Muni in the US - 1895. Originally 18 but converted to 9 in 1935. We still get some players with the hickory sticks! Have been thinking about a set of these from Louisville Golf.

Absolutely beautiful! I made my own putters recently, and a few years ago made some wood driver heads, but that was next level. What I find interesting is that no matter the material you're working with to build something (copper, brass, wood, etc.) each has its own "eccentricity" to working with it that you have to solve to get the best playability. A great example in your video is using lead to back weight the heads (or bottom). My putter heads are plumbing materials with wood dowel inserts, but to weight them peripherally I used metal washers, then made sure to find the exact center of mass before drilling a hole to receive the shaft. The craftmanship shown in that video is so underappreciated today. Thank you for that video.

Welcome back. It looks like your trip was excellent. What a great lesson in clubmaking. How close is Logan from you guys? The school I teach at is playing a football game there in October. I am glad you are back for some more great content.

That was a fantastic video, really a great insight into the efforts that company still maintains. Always Important to keep traditional crafts from the past going. I was wondering if the owner mentioned if they take apprenticeships in order to pass the knowledge on.

Simon, Apprentices are not easy to find but we have just taken on two new staff in their 20s this year and their enthusiasm is fantastic so hopefully the future of traditional clubmaking is in good hands and will be around for a while yet!
