When he talked about the transition of steam to diesel he said diesel was cheaper, less labor intensive, and more efficient but he didn't say more powerful because steam boilers create more power by far than diesel engines. Diesel locomotives are more cost effective all around even though in some cases you needed 4 diesel locomotives or more to replace what 1 steam locomotive could do.
not exactly, diesel electric locomotives have a bigger tractive effort, witch is actually a greater deal for trains
like... Diesels are the best when it comes to start moving, but steam is better to keep it moving
@@f-15TheFkingEagle I'm going to have to disagree with you. I think steam is much more powerful depending on the way you gear the device its driving be it a locomotive or what have you. All depends on the way it's set up.
@@f-15TheFkingEagle I can agree with you that steam locomotives do have issues starting a train moving. But again it's all in how the locomotive is built. When I say steam is more powerful I mean in general over all forms compared to all forms of diesel engines. We can agree to disagree and be cordial I hope.
@@williambryant5946 anyways, youre right
Not sure why this video is titled history of American steam as it covers the world and more modern diesel trains as well, but is an interesting watch regardless
I do agree that steam power is still useful
hello from Kansas🇺🇸
This is so interesting!
I was a stoker for 15 years, and Ican tell you you need to train your stokers properly, or that Garret wil not run very long, That firebox was really attrocious.
Don't you mean electro motive division?
There were three versions of that company, EMC (corporation) , EMD (division), EMD (diesel)
And EMD is still around, but it's owned by Caterpillar
