  • Today we are going to make a Laser LED Sign with a custom ATTiny85 PCB and laser cut base.
    I go step by step through the PCB construction, all the way to programming the ATTiny85 chip.
    Why did I use a custom ATTiny85 PCB instead of an Arduino nano? Well I wanted something super small and I only needed 1 GPIO + I had a bunch sitting in a drawer and they were getting lonely ;)
    You can find a circuit schematic and laser and 3D printer design files in my hackster.io project...
    www.hackster.i...
    The hardware I use to program the ATTiny85 chip is based on Brian Lough's ATTiny85 DIY Programer video...

    Thanks for the emphasizing the extra bit of code to the sketch regarding the 8000000 prescale. My sketch didn't work until I added the snippet of code. Well done!

    Great project video Seon - I like these kind of instructional project videos, was awesome to watch, and makes me want to make a little ATTiny perf board project too!

    Not bad. I should show off my programing shield for uno. I have did this project as a workshop. I used the high density neopixels.

      Thanks Gary! Yeah, for the kids, but they turned out a little bright to go in their room... I might have to add an LDR so I can reduce the brightness when it's in the dark.

    Hello, this is really interesting project. However I have a question: Why did you put capacitor in the circuit? (I don't have good background in electronics...)

    • @UnexpectedMaker
      @UnexpectedMaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a decoupling capacitor, to filter out potential voltage noise.

  • @Hasitier
    @Hasitier 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice. I wanna build one for my daughter. I have all the electronic parts in my lab. But how on earth do I get the name engraved in the acrylic?

    • @UnexpectedMaker
      @UnexpectedMaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a video planned on how to go about making the vertical signs - you can def do it without a laser cutter! Not sure when it's going to come out though - I have soooo many thing on the go right now, my head is spinning!

  • @gregclare

    Nicely detailed project assembly video. Great stuff! But where do you get the acrylic signs from? Is this a project just for those who have their own laser engraver (to make the signs), although I guess you'd need a high power laser for etching transparent acrylic? Sorry for being clueless, but I haven't seen these acrylic signs before. :)

    • @UnexpectedMaker
      @UnexpectedMaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a follow-up video planned that goes over both laser cutting the vertical acrylic - and hand making them... You definitely don't need a laser cutter to make them... but a laser cutter allows for more detailed designs :-)

    • @gregclare
      @gregclare 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome. I look forward to it. Perhaps a cheap CNC engraver could also do the job, instead of a more expensive (& dangerous) laser, if needed for a detailed / professional result? I was looking at one of those cheap (~$200+) 3 axis CNC engravers, but haven't yet decided if I can justify it / if worth spending the $200+ on it. I don't even have a 3D printer yet, but the one I want is the new Prusa i3 MK3, but that's looking like around NZ$1500 by the time I pay NZ customs. So that's also a hard justify! LOL :(

    • @UnexpectedMaker
      @UnexpectedMaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A cheap CNC is def worth looking into - It could be useful for all sorts of things. I also want to get a CNC, but I want something that can CNC aluminium ;) My MK3 Kit arrives tomorrow! I think I might be too impatient to do a build video...

    • @gregclare
      @gregclare 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OMG! You have a MK3 Kit arriving tomorrow!!! I'm sooo jealous! I'm guessing you must have ordered back in Feb? How much did AU customs add to the cost? I'm really looking forward to your YT review of your MK3 build and your initial use thoughts / experience. You might even encourage me to finally pushing the order now button. Unfortunately a big decision for those of us on a tight budget.

    • @UnexpectedMaker
      @UnexpectedMaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I *JUST* got notified it's now arriving today :-) No customs fees... DHL delivery is inclusive of customs from my experience. I ordered Feb 12th, after a month of indecision... but the second I pushed the "buy button" I've been 100000% impatient for it to arrive!

    Hey! I have a question! I made the cicuit using a 1K resistance and a 220 microF capacitor, should the circuit work the same?

  • @lestronicsuk5662
    @lestronicsuk5662 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just came across this video, very nice but you neglected to advise/show that you'll need to burn the bootloader onto the attiny85 first !

    • @UnexpectedMaker
      @UnexpectedMaker  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because you deport need to burn a bootloader first. You can just flash them directly in the Arduino IDE.

    Suppose I wanted to power 3 or 4 1 watt 300ma leds with this chip, would it work?

    • @UnexpectedMaker
      @UnexpectedMaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. Not directly from the IO pins. No micro-controller IO can do that. Most are rated for 20mA max. That's what Transistors and Mosfets are for :)
