  • Baltimore will soon add rat contraceptives to its rodent-fighting arsenal, 11 News Investigates has learned. Rats can be seen crawling all over the place across Baltimore City. They're beefy and foul-smelling in addition to carrying nasty bacteria, viruses and parasites. Norway rats - also known as brown rats, wharf rats or sewer rats - are the most common in Baltimore, as well as the black roof rat. The rats - some as large as cats - all eat garbage and dog feces. Crews go out daily with conventional rodent-fighting methods, like using poison, but those aren't getting ahead of the problem, according to officials with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works' Rat Rubout program.
