I’m a very confused American who’s only just learned of the Burns feast and the address of the haggis and whatnot, but what a sight and what an experience to behold! Scotland is a fascinating place, surely

It’s interesting seeing the extreme of comments within this thread. Anyone who has delivered a toast to the haggis to an audience, especially if they dont really know the language or history of the ode, in my honest opinion you HAVE to annotate it with actions otherwise people dont have a scoobie what you are on about. With the actions and a bit of humour as Cammie has delivered here sells it to that audience. Great theatre too, well done sir!

I agree…I didn’t understand 99% of the words but I adore the Scottish culture, I have learned to play the highland bagpipes and I’ve visited Scotland which I loved so much, I felt so at home there, I have a very fierce stubbornness about me too so I think it’d be a good Scot’s woman! I loved learning about Robert and the address to the haggis was so lively that it didn’t matter if I didn’t understand the words, I understood the passion!

To A Haggis, with my own approximate interpretations in brackets:
Fair fa' your honest sonsie face,
    Great chieftain o' the puddin'-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
    Painch, tripe, or thairm: (ingredients)
Weel are ye worthy of a grace
    As lang's my arm.
(Welcome, great meal - you stand up against the best of them and are worthy of the highest praise.)
The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies (buttocks) like a distant hill,
Your pin would help to mend a mill
    In time of need,
While through your pores the dews distil
    like amber bead.
(Beautiful big meal, you are a comfort and would feed an army. Your juices bead on your skin like whisky)
His knife see rustic labour dight,
And cut you up wi' ready slight,
    Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
    Like ony ditch:
And then, oh what a glorious sight,
    Warm-reekin', rich!
(He cuts you open like a ditch and your delightful innards spill out, warm, fragrant and rich)
Then horn for horn (spoon) they stretch and strive,
De'il tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve (swollen bellies, by & by)
    Are bent like drums:
Then auld guidman, most like to ryve, (burst)
    "Bethankit' hums.
(Dig in, one and all, have your fill until you are fit to burst! The old man at the head of the table leads us in thanks)
Is there that oe'r his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad make her spew
    Wi' perfect scunner, (disgust)
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view,
    On sic (such) a dinner?
(All you with your fancy foreign food, would you dare to look down on this Haggis?)
Poor devil! See him owre his trash
As feckless as a withere'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip lash,
His nieve (fist) a nit (nut):
Through bloody flood or field to dash,
    Oh how unfit!
(That foreign muck won't make a fighting man of you; look at his withered limbs as he eats his awful food)
    But mark the rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap (held) in his walie nieve (ample fist) a blade,
    He'll mak it whissle:
An' legs, an' arms, an' heads will sned (fall)
    Like taps o' thrissle (thistles).
(Look at the strong haggis fed brave, with his powerful footsteps. He will slay his enemies like thistles)
Ye Powers, wha make mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinkin' ware (watery slop)
That jaups in luggies: (splashes in small dishes)
But if you wish her gratefu' prayer,
    Gie her a haggis!
(If you want to feed your people well, give them haggis!)

Ray Mason It seems that there is some confusion here. It is very clear to me - knowing most of Burns’s work - that “To a Haggis” was always intended to be a humorous piece. I’m always confused when the gags are treated with some ill-placed reverence. The Haggis is not the “honoured tradition” some imagine to be. It is a living, vibrant part of Scottish culture. If you want to treat it as a museum piece, THAT is what would have Burns spinning in his grave.

Am a a Scot an a couldny understand much oh that But here is what I thought he said the haggis story the lowly wee haggis lives high in the Scottish heilands it is rarely seen but ,it’s hunted for it’s tasty guts once a year for a week it comes down the mountain to shag (mate ) as it’s known here in Scotland it’s when the haggi hunters set their creels (traps) to catch these tasty wee bastards, they are taken to markets and sold by a professional haggateer and only sold in braces (two) hence the name a brace of haggises then to kitchens all over the land and the prairies of Scotland where they are boiled to perfection by usually a lush (drunk cook) and are flung on a plate with bashed tattles and smashed turnips. ( neeps)as it was the best the lush could muster .so before I give you your haggis supper gobble it doon and don’t ask questions about it’s eating habits but you can trust it’s magic flavours .so eat up and and take a big swally ( mouthful) enjoy Bonny appyteet
