    I used to watch my dad play this game for hours. He'd start playing and I'd just sit on the floor in the computer room and watch him go to all the planets, helping him find certain planets and locations on the old paper map, and being amazed at all the cool aliens. It was an amazing experience. I still dip back into the game now and again to fly around and remember those days

      That's very much like my first experience with SC2: my best friend and me played this on his Tandy PC with one of us controlling the ship and the other making notes and keeping track of the planets on a photocopy of the starmap. It took us an entire summer to discover all the secrets and visit all the planets! Isent my friend the link to Ur Quan Masters when it came out and now we're still playing it, but thousands of km apart.

    SC2 was my favorite game on the 3DO (when that was a thing decades ago). I put a few hundred hours into it and had to try to figure out the game's bizarre structure and plot years before the internet existed. It is absolutely iconic and one of the most memorable games I have ever played in my 30 years as a gamer. The voice acting on the aliens especially was absolutely top notch, a true rarity for the time.

    I think the most unusual about this game is the depth of the story/lore...There are so many throwaway lines in the dialog that could serve as basis of entire games or even multi-game epics. The Taalo, the invisible - and supposedly highly dangerous - Keel-verezy, The races of the sentienet milieu, the Mmmmhrm and their Mother Ark, the creators of the Mycon (and why their colonization never reached the galaxy), the Arilou-Orz conflict(?) accross the universes...the list goes on and on. This game just has 'immersive' written all over it - and all that with a great sense of humor, in a setting that always conveys a sense of urgency...oh...and it has awesome music, too.

    I disagree about the mining. I thought it was fun navigating through hostile planets (both environmentally and biologically) to get the best minerals and more often it's the hostile planets that have the most precious ones. You had to manage planet landers and invest in more cargo pods to mine even more minerals. IMO, this is miles better than the mining in Mass Effect, for example.

      When you scanned that 2000-degree planet and saw those 3 or 4 GIANT purple nodes and were like, "Eh, I'm gonna risk it and try to land right on it." And then you got one or two, maybe lost a lander, but were so happy you got 30-40 exotics. Better than sex.

      Moreover, in the original version (or one of it) your rover's navigation screen wasn't the entire planet with all the cataclysms shown, it was limited to a tiny square screen at bottom right, which made it far more difficult and challenging

      The mining made you feel weak and small at the beginning. Your ship couldn't even turn. You come back with some rare earths and you have enough for 2 turning thrusts!
      The slow build up from weak to strong is essential to the game.

Only handful of computer nerds knew about the game. Back in 92 I was 11th grade. I played it when it first came out. I got a copy from my computer nerd buddy from the library when it was released. So yeah the game wasn't really popular when it was first released but was acknowledged by everyone who played to be one of the most influential PC game at the time.

We didn't you know find the Sa-Matra or where the chmmr or quasispace and some other things because we we're small kids. About 3 years ago I returned to the game still having my data from back then but I haven't played it in years, I still remembered like everything I knew... I did a ton of stuff but to this day I've never beat the game, I now how to beat the game and I could if I wanted to but I still haven't. I've seen my dad take down the Sa-matra about 13 times... Games in this nature (space sims, I guess?) are very appealing to me because they draw upon the rich history of old school SF, but the sheer depth and breadth of them can be dizzying - assuming they run well on modern OSs at all. I'm so glad a game like this has such a passionate community, since without the Ur-Quan Masters patch you mentioned I doubt a lot of people would even consider playing it.

    SC2 is so fantastic. one of my favorite games of all time. amazing lore. short pitch "Mass effect in the 90's" (but with a good ending). i had gotten to play SC on the Sega, back in the day, and once i found out about SC2, it quickly became a game i go back to all the time to play again and again over the years. the writing is fantastic. the music is great.
    the original SC has some fun strategy, having you move fleets around a star map, exploring, and such. it was definitely simple, but the races just pop so much, i was instantly interested to see them fleshed out in SC2. the actual Sequel to SC2, to say i am so so hopeful it will live up to the original (and i am sure it will, i just hope something bad doesn't happen to the creators before they can make it). Ur-Quon Masters 2 is gonna be so great.

There were several videos and blog posts on TH-cam and Patreon, as well as on their site obviously. The legal battle is long over, both parties seem satisfied enough and, at least openly, no hard feelings remain. Origins is out, got several updates. Pretty OK for anyone who has not played UQM, but very meh for those who did. Speaking of UQM, it is now free on Steam.

      SC3 really suffered from a lot of issues that came together to make the game annoying... the soundtrack was a terrible midi one from the amazing and original SC2 soundtrack, the animated puppets for aliens was terrible for almost all the races, and parts of the gameplay being a boring sim style of colonies which didn't really matter at all...
      The story of SC3 was actually pretty cool, and the new aliens were fun too... it gets mostly shit for the story since it's not "Paul & Fred" canon, but when ignoring this detail it's actually a pretty good story... The backstory of the Ur-Quan and their kin (Technically they both are Ur-Quan with the actual separate factions named after key figures from their shared past) who first appear in this is actually interesting albeit sad. The two factions split because of a disagreement tied to their distant past and the group the Alliance calls the Ur-Quan are by far the nicer of the two.

    But I was not interested in having people over, as the Ur-Quan needed to be defeated, and this Captain was going to stay the course.
    It wasn't until years later that I understood the subtext of why the ballerina wanted to come swim in my pool, after sitting on my lap, despite her not having her swimwear.

    I think humanoid aliens are a trope that comes from (primarily) Star Trek. Human actors with prosthetics and makeup became the archetype, so even though there's no real reason to have humanoid aliens in a video game, Mass Effect etc are just paying homage to that part of sci-fi heritage.

    The legal battle over the name star control got heated and work delayed on each project. There was a breakthrough thanks to Bees. Yes bees. All parties had a interest in bee keeping and they all came to a understanding that allowed thier respective projects to go forward.

    I think to coolest thing about starcontrol 2 is that it is opensource so anybody can modify the game now. I was doing some editions g after ai beat the game. For example. I made it so I had unlimited fuel to beat the game faster. All you need is the source code and sdl version that the games uses and knowelege of the C programming languange.

    I will say that if you don't want to do mining you can skip most of it. Get a spathi or arilou ship which can be done early on. Then go to Mycon space and fight as much as you can. They're relatively easy to fight and generate decent RUs. Have fun!
    I enjoy both mining and combat in this game. But the best is the storytelling, aliens, and music!

    My only complaint with this game would be the time limit. You can invest hours into a play though and have it all go to sh!t because you took too long.

      reignick1133 Well I got more than 100 hours before I realised about them. I had loads and loads of failed playthrough where I either took too long mining and lost to the Kohr-Ah, or died to aliens, or failed miserably in some other way.

    Oh my god! 17:53 I had completely forgottemn about that! So why _did_ his ship turn purple?

    • @marthedge
      @marthedge 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not know if you found the answer, however it has to do with color symbolism. Essentially purple when used by marketers is used to signify that the product is expensive, while it also exudes royalty, warmth and confidence. In the context of the mel's bridge, it turns from red (attention-getting) to selling vastly important/valuable information (purple), indicating that they are selling premium goods.
      In regards to the melnorme themselves, a red bridge is for travel, a purple bridge is for trade, and a blue bridge is for them to see their weapon console better.

    I think the idea of making aliens look a lot like humans pretty much goes all the way back to Star Trek. Back then movies and television didn’t have the budget to be able to make aliens look alien. So the best and cheap route was to put people in make up with fake prosthetics and that kind of became a tradition in a sense in science fiction history. But also it might be a combination of what you said that yes it is easier to identify with a human form because that’s our eyes and our brains work. If we truly made an extra terrestrial that was vastly beyond any concept that we’re familiar it would be very hard to identify with it.

  • @matthewbreytenbach4483
    @matthewbreytenbach4483 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't speak for video games, but in sci fi tv shows they rely on gluing things to actors/putting them in suits for their bulk alien needs.

    Dont use a guide when playing this, be aware that first full gameplay you are likely to lose.

    This is a standout game for many reasons. My favorite being (1) dialogue: it's the funniest game ever made. I don't like the voice acting so it's better to read the text IMO (2) the space exploration aspect was groundbreaking -- it still does it better than most games (3) super fun combat (4) planetfall mini game is fun when you find exotics and special planets. Many many future games and media copied from this game.

    One of the best games ever! Only noobs are bored by mining, the seasoned spacefarer sees enough resources to not care for risky and poor landings. You do not kill animals, they are captured and sold to the space traders, who attempt to save the galaxy by feeding them to the galaxy eaters. How dare you insult the cruel space spiders Ilwrath who inflict the most gruesome deaths ever! Immersive story, hints to human history, incredible music that i listened for hours and i still like it some of the best electronic tracks.

      Senzorei Yep. ^_^ I was mostly joking as really it’s just a different experience. I personally like it a lot more though, with almost all retro games I would rather keep the original pixels than HD graphics but in the case of Star Control 2 I love the HD art so much, probably partially due to nostalgia.
