@@skiman863 The name is not wrong, it is your interpretation of it that is wrong. The name "killer whale" derives the early whalers, they saw how the Orcas hunting and killing whales, hence they where called whale killers, turning on to killer of whales, and finally shortened to killer whale. Look it up on Wikipedia. What is amazing however, is their ability to distinguish so clearly between what to prey and what to not, thinking of that of that black dog paddling towards the beach with and Orca sniffing it's butt, making absolutely no attempt to nibble the dogs tail or legs. They truly are amazing animals.

Good that the people got up out of the water and (mostly) out of reach. These Orcas are Transients and they hunt sea mammals like seals, dolphins and sea lions. Not sure if they just might consider a human swimming as just another sea mammal to snack on. The Salmon Eaters travel in much larger groups and vocalize a lot more. They don't eat seals, (nor is a human at quite such a risk as being considered prey). Pretty cool to have such a close encounter.

I doubt it. They are picky eaters. It is like saying Humans eat Cows but would we consider Lions as food. Most likely not, even if we could kill them. Had I been where that one guy was standing, daft me would lean over and try to pet it as it swam by. I have a hard time staying away from wildlife even though I know we have to, to keep them safe. I hid an injured deer in my backyard 2 years ago and nursed her back to health and fed her, left water out for her, and then one day after about 2 weeks, she got up, jumped the 5ft fence and went back to her wild life. I can't ignore wildlife since I love animals too much.

They are beautiful. They don't eat humans. So they were probably just coming to say hi and see what the swimmers were doing. It's like there is an unsaid relationship between humans and wild orcas. Because they don't hurt us. And we don't hurt them. They will hunt almost every that goes in the water. But not people. Completely wild orcas have been observed protecting humans when there are other threats in the water such as sharks.

Yup, I grew up on the BC coast and swam in the water at least hundreds of times. Maybe a few thousand times. Lots. First dozen or so times I was really nervous about orcas and sea lions.Wanna know what happened? Nothing. After a while you get pretty used to it because nothing ever attacks you. Water is pretty cold though, so don't stay in too long. Other than that it is pretty safe to swim there. Makes you feel pretty good about yourself too. Nothing quite like diving down in the water, hovering there, and everything is completely quiet and peaceful. Snorkel diving at it's best.
Since I spent literally years in the water and nothing ever attacked me, I have grown quite fond of those 'dangerous' creatures. Don't mess with them when they are rutting, but other than that they are probably much safer than humans. Keep your distance and be respectful and no harm will come your way.
