- Mother Holle, also known as "Frau Holle,", "Mother Hulda" or "Old Mother Frost" is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm in Children's and Household Tales in 1812.
Mother Holle (also known in various regions as Holla, Holda, Perchta, Hulda, Berchta, Berta, or Bertha, with possible ties to the Norse Goddess Hel, was initially a pre-Christian female legendary figure who survived in popular belief well into the 19th century.
Digging deeper beyond the seeming moralism of this story is a rich, feminine centric tale, possibly connected to pre-Christian blood mystery stories and the sacred cycle of women's lives.
