    Ken,
    That turned out really nice! As far as the moisture meter, good luck, mine did that to me a few times, then the bowl splits after it's done, yeah expensive piece of electronic instrument to smash on the floor! Haven't had that problem since! Nice video

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the issue with these moisture meters is they only read the top layer. If the moisture is zero there, that's what it reads. BUT inside the blank it could be a lot higher. I think these are made for boards 2" thick or something like that.

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Could be, but I'm thinking that heating the wood over 220 changes it somehow. I had another piece of oak that did the same thing and I thought it was dry. It split after turning sitting in my house. So to tell the truth I'm at a loss.

    Absolutely gorgeous! The colors and grain of the wood are so lovely, and the blues of the resin shimmer. Superb! My favorite, still, of all the beauty that you create, is the golden honey pot you created, a few years ago, from honeycombed cardboard packing material, wood, and resin. The golden, rich glow of it entranced me, and it's just.....stunning, my favorite. Sir, if I could, someday, get together the funds to do it, could or would you make one for me? I'd need to know the price, so I can start saving up for one. Would such a beautiful thing be possible? I'd want it with the cardboard honeycomb, instead of metal. Please let me know, if you would. My thanks to you! Keep creating so much beauty! Watching your videos gives me true joy.

    Hey Ken, I have a couple of questions. Do you stabilize the wood before drying and casting? If not, do you you ever have a problem with the wood moving and separating after turning? I'm new to hybrid turning and have seen different techniques.
    Love your work by the way!

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tom, Thanks for commenting. I do not stabilize wood before turning. I dry most of my blanks in the oven and then cast them. I have had trouble with wood movement, but normally it is because the blank wasn't dry enough. I usually want it below 10%.

    Now I know nothing about nothing so I’m really curious, how did that bit get there? Is it possible that someone drilled into it while it was growing and the tree healed around it? But wouldn’t that leave a knot or something? Idk...like I said I’m very curious.

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kris, It is possible that the very tip on my drill bit broke off as I drilled a hole to cut the turning blank. But if it did I can not find that drill bit. It could have happened a while back when I first got the wood and I just don't remember.

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Someone suggested that the meter won;t read below a certain moisture %. But I had another piece do it and it ended up cracking as it dried. So your guess is as good as mine.

    The Shine Juice you use, is it 1/3 clear shellac, 1/3 denatured alcohol, 1/3 boiled linseed oil? If it is have you even tries using a different oil in the mix? (the batch I made, first time using it, turned my project a shade of yellow).

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The formula I use darkens the piece and I think it yellows a bit. I have heard of others using things like orange oil. The boiled linseed oil is used as a hardener in the mixture, so I think you could use other oils.

    • @MoonpieCreations

      Even, that is an interesting thought. I'm not sure if the resin would get into the nooks and crannies, but it may be worth a try. I'll talk to my buddy at the local junkyard to see if he can get me a couple handfuls. Thanks.

    I have a moisture guage made by GENERAL. It won't show a reading if the moisture content is below like 6 or 7 percent. This could be the case for you. I went to the directions which i always ignore until i hit a snag. Test it on a piece of kiln dried lumber like a 2×4. You won't get a reading.
    Hey, I'm about out of Aluminlite and I'm thinking of trying Total Boat. Alumilite is way too finicky about any moisture. What breed of TB would you recommend? I would use it for primarily the same application you do.

      I was thinking the same thing at first.I had another piece of oak that did the same thing and after it was turned brought it in the house and it split. So I am not sure it was under 10% when I turned it. I tested it on a round blank I cooked at 220 not 350 and it read at 7%.........I am baffled by this. More experimenting is needed.

    You use the moisture meters a lot. What would happen if you tried turning a piece that hadn’t fully dried or even one that was wet?

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If with resin, the resin would crack and cloud up. The wood will shift and move as it dries.

    love your videos, I do have a question, have you noticed a difference between using total boat 5:1 vs the 2:1 resins? Just curious if there is anything you noticed with your experience

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Duggan,
      I have noticed a difference. 1. The is a sort of chemical smell to the 5:1. It is bearable, but I would use a respirator with it while pouring. 2. Hardness. 5:1 gets hard, I mean real hard. Not so much you can't turn it, but you can tell the difference when turning. 3. Cost, 5:1 is slightly cheaper. So if someone is on a tighter budget they could get the 5:1 and the project would look the same. Those are the differences I have noticed. Hope that helps. feel free to ask any other questions.

      @@MoonpieCreations - Yeah, I learned that a little while back. The worst outcome is not clicking anything. Dislikes show that people cared enough to click something. On a side note, a dislike in Australia might actually be a like everywhere else. Like how the water in the toilets down there swirl in the opposite direction.
