10 Krautrock Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

In case you don't care to listen to me mumbling for almost 15 minutes, here's the list of 10 krautrock albums you gotta hear before you die (in no particular order):

A nice selection of 10 essential Krautrock albums. The only album I haven’t heard is Jane’s Here We Are.
My favourite two, Gila and Ash Ra Tempel’s 1st certainly are masterpieces and are timeless.
Some good contenders are Code III - Planet of Man (1974) Et Cetera - s/t (1971) and Walter Wegmuller - Tarot (1973).
These are three albums that are in my Top 10. It’s nice to see different variations of what an individual’s top 10 would be, and there are many great krautrock albums out there!!!

I agree, both Ash Ra Tempel and Gila are certainly masterpieces, and I don't say that about too many albums. You should definitely give Jane - Here We Are a listen. Not a very experimental album, but solid and melodic high quality heavy prog.

I have gila on CD,and a few ash ra temple CD's..ash ra temple and seven up..all are great
I have the live at home album by Jane on lp.i can hear 70s pink Floyd influences on that one
My holy grail Krautrock albums are Mammut (1971) and Rufus Zuphall (1971). Honorable mention is Vita Nova (1971). Of all the TH-cam channels, you’re the best of presenting obscure albums because you give background facts. I use all my Hans Pokora books to identify these bands and then try to find them on discogs. Thanks for your valued insight on these records.
Oh, I love both Rufus Zuphall's albums! They could easily have found their way on this list. Mammut is definitely a holy grail. I only have a reissue from the 90's of that one. Great video Nico. I was just in conversation with someone at Guerssen Records and got a tip that they are working on an official reissue of that Necronomicon record. Guerssen pressings are always top notch, and this one is in dire need of an official reissue that won’t break the bank.

Wow! A Guerssen treatment of Necronomicon is great news indeed. I really love that reissue label. Always the highest quality, bot packaging and soundwise. They also do a great job releasing the titles which have been unavailable for a long time.

Great video! Amazing picks, at least the 6 that I know about! The rest 4 I never heard about (Necronomicon, My Solid Ground, Silberbart, Jane) but will definitely try to listen to! I would include Tago Mago and Neu! in my version of this list, these 2 records had a great influence on me and were probably one of the earliest Krautrock albums I ever listened to. Cheers!

Just love that Guru Guru, definitely a favorite, and that Necronomicon is one I've been hunting for over the coarse of many years. Phallus Dei is another one I've been on the hunt for on wax for some time, such a great unique record. Added the Gila to my list just based on your description and that album art. I have never been able to really wrap my head around that Silberbart, but I come back to it haha. Great list, real happy to have found your channel!

Yeah, Guru Guru - UFO is a unique listen. I love Mani Neumeier's drumming and "vocals". It's quite evident that Ax Genrich was inspired by Hendrix, but still he managed to create his unique style and sound within Guru Guru's framework. I also love Hinten and Känguru.
Amon Düül II definitely pioneered the German progressive music scene alongside Can in those early days of "krautrock". Most people hail Yeti as their most significant record, but even though I love that record too, I tend to gravitate towards Phallus Dei. It should be obtainable, at least as a reissue. I think it's in constant demand and in print.
Yeah, check out Gila's first album. Garden Of Delights have just reissued it with a 30 page booklet containing photos and band bio + the giant poster which is always missing from the original issue. I guess you know Garden Of Delight, a wonderful reissue label.
I fell in love with Silberbart immediately when I heard it, but I understand it could be an acquired listen, especially the vocals.

Phallus Dei is easier to get as there was a cheaper reissue with a different cover - in UK at least - with the band members on the front

Excellent list!! Love all of those titles and I have a few of them myself :) Krautrock is a favorite genre for me to just amazing bands. Hey John! It has been a while hasn't it :-) I agree, the krautrock universe is just so fascinating and exciting still 50 years after the fact. I have acquired a decent stack of originals, but I have to resort to reissues as well. The originals are getting more and more expensive. Fortunately there are a handful of serious high quality reissue labels which makes the records obtainable. Take care!

Anyhow, I didn't really hear you mention 'psychedelic' in describing any of these albums. Are there any? Lots of prog, but I'm interested in heavy psych sound, similar to what you hear on Fraction - Moon Blood. Let me know.

Yeah, I realize I didn't use the word psychedelic in this video, but I would definitely classify Amon Düül Phallus Dei, Gila - S/T and perhaps Ash Ra Tempel as psychedelic, but more in a cosmic rock sense. Not the 60's sort of psychedelia, but acid definitely played a part in the German progressive music scene...perhaps other psychedelics as well :-)

Excellent excellent video and topic! Krautrock is not my bag, but I can respect it. Two of my best friends are fans and tried turning me onto Neu and Amon Duul II. This video will give me some more things to listen to when the mood is right! Appreciate you picking the best track off each album to sample! Definitely bookmarking this one. I can understand that krautrock isn't everyone's cup of tea, but perhaps a list like this could be an entry into a very diverse musical universe, which this certainly is. I guess you perhaps would like the more straight in your face hard & heavy prog rock?! If that's so I strongly recommend you check out bands such as Gift (self titled debut album), Night Sun - Mournin' and Kin Ping Meh's first album. I hope you find something of interest. Great video Nico. Must have been difficult to choose 10 albums. All solid choices for sure. I have this Necronomicon on my want list for ever, need to find a re issue. The fact you show Jane was a surprise to me. Agree that it is a great album but thought you will focus on the more rare stuff.

Great list Nico! I like how you noted your recommended track. Guru Guru UFO is probably my favorite from this list. And several of these I need to check out. Ash Ra Tempel is a big want for me, hard to find. I have a Krautrock/German Prog video in the works. Take care!

Guru Guru ranks high among my top favourites from the German scene. Probably top 10 at least.
There are some unofficial Ash Ra Tempel reissue LP's floating around, but they sound decent and are cheap, as opposed to the original. I would strongly recommend you get the recent MG.Art reissue of the second LP "Schwingungen". It sounds magnificent and comes with a print of the original promo sheet.
I will definitely check out your krautrock video when you publish it.

Solid choices Nico and all among my favorites as well as those great record labels. I'm one for thick atmosphere and otherworldly musical jaunts. It would be difficult for me to narrow down 10 as I love so many equally well. I was really impressed with the Gila and Amon Duul II's upon discovery. Ashra's debut and 'UFO' is amazing and I enjoy 'Electronic Meditation' more as it ages like a fine wine. Such unsettling, mysterious, murky uncharted realms some of these albums effectively transport the listener. Do you like Ikarus? Another gem listen and proggy atmospheric traveler for my ears. So good to see these lesser shown but deserved krautrock classics!
Ikarus is a great album. I like it a lot!

I agree with you, unsettling, mysterious, murky, thick atmospheric and otherworldly sounds is the perfect description. I had a hard time making this list, but my mindset was to make a list somewhat outside the biggest and most known names for those who want to discover the krautrock scene. I could easily have done a top 100 list and still felt some important titles were left out :-)
I really dig Ikarus. I only have a Long Hair reissue, but the original on Plus is definitely on my wantlist.

Ashra Temple is one I need to seek out also I’ve haven’t ran across one in the wild .I had a feeling Tangerine Dream was going to make the list love their albums I have all the seventies title . Yeah, Message's two first albums are a must if one is into German progressive rock. Ash Ra Tempel and other German originals are getting increasingly harder to find in the wild. Krautrock is more in demand than ever and the prices are getting out of hand, unfortunately. Fortunately there are a couple of great reissue labels which take responsibility for releasing many of the sought after titles.
Tangerine Dream just had to be on the list, even though they are fairly known outside the German borders. I think Electronic Meditations stands out from their other albums and wanted to give it the attention it deserves.

Splendid topic! Not having heard it all, I must have some time left to enjoy more Krautrock. Jeg snakker språket ditt. Luzifers Ghilom is one of my favorite Krautrock tunes, but requires the right setting and mood. I have been on a bit of a Can spree as of late, and enjoyed Ege Bamyasi Okraschoten over the longer weekend and finally found a Faust LP in the wild (IV). Pete over at the Sounds from the West Coast channel has several Krautrock videos worth checking out that can help with emptying the wallet.

Can's early albums are fantastic! I really love Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi. Future Days is good as well, but I lose interest after that one. Congrats on finding Faust IV. It's getting increasingly rare finding any krautrock originals in the wild.

funny, "Made in Germany" is by far my least favorite album of theirs. "Yeti" and "Tanz Der Lemminge I consider both masterpieces.

That Long Hair reissue of Silberbart sure sounds as good as the original. They really know how to do proper reissues.
I also love Jane's first 4-5 albums, but Here We Are has struck a nerve in me. Just fabulous!

"Backdoor Possibilties" from Birthcontrol is my all time favourite. More familiar for their hardrock sound. This one is a prog rock album with jazz influence, beautiful vocal harmonies. A masterpiece, that should get more promotion i think

Hey Dale and thanks for watching and commenting! As I mention early on in the video "krautrock" isn't a music genre, but more a cultural/musical phenomena from about 1968 to 1977. The term was, as you surely know, coined by British music press in the 70's and included all experimental, progressive German music in that time frame, thus including everything from acid folk to experimental avantgarde progressive noisy rock to electronica to jazzrock. That's why I include Jane, which of course is a more standarized progressive rock style :-)
Yeah, Harmonia definitely deserves a mention in such a list. I should have made a list called 100 krautrock albums you must hear before you die. Choosing only 10 was a difficult task and if I had done another one in a month, maybe it would be significantly different. Thanks for taking the time and thanks for your input. The heaviest Krautrock albums are Baumstam - 'Baumstam', Prof. Wolfff - 'Prof. Wolfff' and Franz K. -
'Sensemann'.

No Agitation Free, Cluster, Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze, Popol Vuh, Out of Focus, Mythos, Faust, Harmonia,Achim Reichel etc etc. I don't envy you picking out 10. I realise that all lists are essentially personal and respect for you for showing your choices but from my perspective there are many more you need to he's before you die. Krautrock changed and expanded the musical vocabulary. You can hear whole new genres being born.
Of course, every band you mention should be on the list, but then it would be a "100 krautrock albums you must hear before you die" list. Kraftwerk, Popol Vuh, Faust and Harmonia are some of the biggest names within the krautrock universe. I made it a point to choose some of the more obscure artists and titles. If I remember correctly, I state in the video that if I were to make another video on the same topic, the list would have been different. Thanks for watching!

Agree with all you say. I'm fortunate in that I live a short train ride from the famous Ultima Thule Records in Leicester UK. The Freeman brothers who wrote the definitive "Crack In The Cosmic Egg" have turned me on to a lot of Krautrock and other weird and wonderful music. They are walking encyclopedias about the scene and boy have I dived deep.

Thanks for watching and sharing those fond memories. I would definitely have loved to visit Woolfie, but I was too late to the party growing up in the 70's and 80's. In Norway those German progressive rock albums were never attainable anyway back in the day. It has taken me quite a few years to find and collect the ones I have in my collection by now. id like to know where you purchase your vinyl selections from ? Im In Sa nRafael ca .which is not the best Place to track down Rare prog Vinyl.. Berkeley amoeba used to be the best place .But not anymore,.althiough they do get some focus).. .More often then not its obscure psych & prog bands on obscure label out of or where ever no ones ever heard of that Ends up for $ 100 in the bargin bin section!. .We have crummy Vinyl stores Nothing to underground anymore. or cool .The last vinyl purchase I made was from universe Zero V.G.G....hit me back,Thanks!.Ps. I have amon duul 2-phallus dei on CD.. I can hear some early pink Floyd and velvet underground influences on that one
There are definitely cross references between early Pink Floyd and Amon Düül II. If Pink Floyd were a German band I think they would have been considered "founding fathers" of the krautrock scene.

It's hard to come by Ash Ra Tempel's first LP. Even the unofficial ones. I think it is due for an official re-release during 2023, but don't quote me on that :-) Thanks for watching!
