Harvey was known to be gay for a long time before the murders took place, and the mayor was also shot on the same day beforehand. The “panic” part of the gay panic defense would require Harvey being gay to come as some sort of surprise. The fact that “Gay panic” is a fucking defence to begin with is disgusting. What, you question your sexuality or attraction so you fucking shoot a human being? Disgusting

With the thumbnail, i thought this was about a low poly superhot-like game called "one Murder", and I was confused about how that indie game affected gay rights.
Something I remember is when I was reading about John Wayne Gacy, one of the most infamous serial killers, I realized just how quickly he would have been caught if it wasn’t for homophobia. Multiple times where the victim was gay so was overlooked, abuse at the hands of his father due to homophobia causing most of his issues, and misunderstandings that wouldn’t be acceptable today.
Different but similar, Jack the Ripper is an infamous serial killer who would have been caught easily, but he only killed prostitutes (and women who weren’t prostitutes but hid their murder attempt because they were more scared of people assuming they were prostitutes). Yet, did you vote for the Gore/Lieberman ticket, or for Biden? Both Lieberman and Biden, in the 90's no less, both from pretty solid Dem states, showed their TRUE depravity when they sided with the notoriously right wing Jesse Helms, helping him to pass his caustic amendment to an education spending bill, which forbade, at the risk of losing any federal subsidies, school personnel, teachers or staff, from counseling 'at risk' teens with words which in anyway suggest homosexuality is anything but wrong, immoral, unacceptable behavior. So, what if they suffer, take their lives, just one less homo. That's your President.
Seems like about every 20ish years we have a fake moral panic. And the number one sign is when they say this "invisible" threat is coming after our children 1960s during integration - there are white folks on film saying they don't have a problem with blacks but they oppose integration because "my kid came home crying someone told him he'd have to marry a [black person]" 1990s - fake satanic panic. People start claiming there are secret satanic cults everywhere and they're taking over preschools to get our children. A few innocent preschool teachers were sent to prison over false testimony of satanic worship. The children are now adults and confirm none of it ever happened but they felt coerced by the adults to give false testimony. Now - Trump literally said at a really the other day "imagine you send your beautiful child off to school, and they don't even tell you, and your kid has transgender surgery and comes home a different gender" despite there never being a single case of this. I don't need to say this to anyone with a functioning brain but you need your parent's consent to get any medical procedure and many are not aware that there hasn't been A SINGLE case of a child getting gender reassignment surgery in the US as that is a treatment for adults. Same fascist playbook, some invisible "other" who nobody has seen actually attacking anyone with their own eyes, is coming after the kids

Goddamn nothing about that man is good. Everything new I learn about him is unsurprising but more and more deeply unsettling. He’s done irreparable harm, and it hasn’t been a grift.
The movie _Milk_ , starring Sean Penn, was how I was first introduced to Harvey Milk. He was essentially the MLK of the LGBT Movement. I have no doubt that had he lived, Milk would've been SF's first gay mayor. I think another reason why Moscone and Milk's assassinations weren't as publicized was because the Jonestown Massacre took place just a few days prior. For obvious reasons, that dominated the national headlines (and took top precedent) at the time, while the assassinations just flew under the radar.
And Jim Jones and the People's Temple were out of San Francisco, too. In fact, the folks of the People's Temple campaigned for Mayor Moscone in the prior mayoral election.
it was the gay movement. Not the LGBTQRS movement. Gays were persecuted, not lesbians or bi women who were busy oppressing gays and trying to hijack the feminist movement.

It's nice that the Navy finally named a ship after him, given they kicked him out. Its nice that people are still sharing Harvey's story. I think about it nearly daily when passing by a street named for him here in Portland, Oregon.
Well, a big problem nowadays is that the LGBTQ+ community has a lot (and I mean a lot) of bad actors who try to attach themselves to the community, to the point the conservatives believe they are a legitimate part of it. Look at MAPs, for instance. We know they’re not actually part of it, but they keep pushing it. And the more heavy-handed methods and slogans of some T-rights activists doesn’t help (such as the problematic chanting of “We’re coming for your kids”). It’s becoming far more complex, and as a member of the community and supporter of it, the community is struggling with new and more radical groups trying to join the mainstream - and tainting it as a result in the eyes of the moderates and conservatives.

And the number one sign is when they say this "invisible" threat is coming after our children
1960s during integration - there are white folks on film saying they don't have a problem with blacks but they oppose integration because "my kid came home crying someone told him he'd have to marry a [black person]"
1990s - fake satanic panic.

As a gay individual, I am really thankful for you covering this topic. I had only heard about Harvey Milk and knew that he was killed. I never knew the whole story.
There's a 2008, movie length dramatised documentary film starring SEAN PENN, I have seen a long time ago. Later I found a DVD of it for sale second hand. Haven't re-watched it. I recall the double-murderer got one of the lightest sentences the US Justice system ever gave out. The murderer got less jail time for 2 murders than other folks get for a bar-room brawl. As I remember it, he didn't last long after his release from jail.
Who remembers Brianna Ghey. She was born a male but transitioned to a female. And was murdered by two bullies in a park. If this was any normal murder the perpetrators would never be forgiven, they would be seen as monsters by society for all eternity. But because she was trans people weren’t condemning the two killers. Even some influencers were debating that the killers weren’t evil and that it wasn’t that bad, and some people even supported the killers calling them heroes. And when any trans person spoke out against the killers people called them “selfish and woke” I am ashamed of people who still think it's ok to mistreat lgbtq community members, I'm even somewhat religious myself and in no way is it an excuse to justify the murder of someone because of their sexuality.
People love to call trans people monsters then turn around and brutalize them. It’s a double standard that makes them mad when you point it out

Epic animation at the beginning
Found you on Nebula but watching again here to please the algorithm
Same!
Love any time you all do these animations. Thanks for sharing this story with us!
2:47 sounded like dad
It's too bad I had only heard of him earlier today funny enough. This video happened to be extremely timely for me! Thanks for the conclusion at the end. It reminds us the rights we have had to fight for over time are always under attack, sometimes more vigorously than others. The bill from Florida being an example of the rising tide of unrighteous, grievance filled backlash.
The ad read is so insensitive.
I know right like what tone was he going for😭
I marched in the 20th Memorial in November 1998. Met many of the people who worked with Harvey Milk. Briefly met Harvey Milks brother Robert. It was a very moving experience. Lot of interesting stories about the Board of Supervisors working with Harvey.
As a bi trans woman, I have nothing but respect for Harvey. I can't believe Dan literally committed a double homicide against government officials and only got 7 years, just because one of them was gay and the jury was biased. I'm so glad I wasn't around in the 70s man.

For a moment I missread the title, idk why my mind changed Murder into Game but, I thought ''Woah SUPERHOT changed Gay Rights forever? Dang I gotta watch this'' and now I realize that I may be stupid
i thought that this was a totally accurate battle simulator video from the thumbnail im so cooked
14:55 all I'm hearing is that you can't trust any politician at their word, not even ones claiming to be progressive.
I think i counted 20 ads trying to watch this. Almost an ad a minute.... Thats insane
Then in the vid u do advertising for your sponsor and podcast. Better be making bank for this shit
Love the mix of LEMMiNO editing and real video. Great stuff!
Great video on an important subject. It’s sad that bigoted, scared snowflakes are still pushing for homophobic policies in this day and age.
Really like the way you used 3D animation at the beginning.
I thought this video was gonna be about the first murder case to use the gay panic defense. Side note: that'd be a pretty cool video topic
As soon as I read the title I had tears in my eyes. It was like I had a Vietnam flashback to when I first learned about H. Milk. His story is burned into my memory forever.
It's honestly scary that this whole thing even happened. Someone being gay shouldn't cause this much controversy yet hear we are. Even in 2024 nothing's changed. I fear it'll only get worse honestly.
I saw the thumbnail and thought this was a superhot video. You would not believe my surprise when I read the title.

Was NOT expecting this, am absolutely delighted!!!
I love that Milk is always smiling in these pictures. Man has found his calling
Imagine having your murder juxtaposed with an ad. Shame on you
Another amazing video. This is the kinda stuff that needs to be taught in schools.
Not the kinda message you want with the mount of corrupt gay people walking around, today's built different.

it already fucking is. see all the rainbow flags hanging in schools now?
2:46 he said dad instead of dead wth
I only ever knew Milk from the movie in his name that was all the rage when it came out where I lived. Thank you Spectacle for covering such an important man and point in history ❤
7 years for the murder of two people. Thats fucking insane.
From a brazilian watcher here, I truly find it awesome and humourous that you put this specific photo of Jair M. Bolsonaro in this part 24:32
nice job dude lmao
Harvey Milk would have been 94 this year
