For question tags with has/have/had there may be another way to identify too.
Ex: I had a house, ______?
We could use question directly to see what fits. Like, I had a house ------> Did I have a house? And the answer wouldn't be "I had", it would be "I did", so "didn't I" would fit in the tag.
Same way, "I had cleaned the room" ---> Had you cleaned the room? Answer would be "Yes, I had", not "Yes I did", hence "hadn't I" would fit in the question tag.
Might help in case you forget while in the exam whether auxiliary verb directly fits in the tag or main verb.
