Germination alone doesn't tell the whole story. My granddaughter planted a watermelon seed in my flower planter. It germinated and grew so much that it crowded out my petunias but it never produced a single flower (or watermelon, obviously). I've also tried to raise black beans and pinto beans from dried store bought beans without success. I think most supermarket produce (and dried beans) is grown from hybrids that don't successfully reproduce in the second generation.
